1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 with 6,350 Miles

As I discussed in the ’91 911 Turbo post, while Porsche claimed that a fair amount (85%!) of the “new” Turbo was “new”, in reality it was an evolution of the ’89 Turbo wrapped in a smoother package. However, as our reader Howard pointed out in the comments, one very important change outside of the look was the suspension, which moved away from wooden carts the antiquated torsion bar setup to ‘modern’ coil springs. Coupled with the new limited-slip differential, anti-lock brakes and more sophisticated engine management (hence, smoother power delivery), the ’91 Turbo was a lot more livable in day-to-day situations.

Of course, that meant that it was possible to introduce even more power. Since the ’91 Turbo was a replacement for the defunct 965/969 V8 project, it made sense that Porsche hadn’t developed a new Turbo motor for the initial 964 Turbo launch. But for 1993, Porsche took the 964’s 3.6 liter and mated it with the turbocharger from the 3.3. The result was, of course, the Turbo 3.6. The extra displacement meant power was up 40 to 360 and torque 52 to 384 lb.ft, while both numbers were achieved lower in the rev range. To show off this new-found power, Porsche installed some fantastic Speedline-made Cup wheels and discrete “3.6” badging after the Turbo script. Despite the relative undercover looks, these are sought cars.

Today’s car is listed as one of the 288 Turbo 3.6s imported in ’94, and with a scant 6,350 miles on the odometer you know the price will be high. How high?

1991 Porsche 911 Turbo – REVISIT

Perhaps a bit ahead of the market, six months after I initially wrote this 965 up it remains for sale at the same $74,995 asking price. It would seem that my original thought that it was a bit overpriced was on the mark. The color combination probably isn’t the most iconic 965 pallet, but it’s understated and pretty. What would you be willing to pay for this example?

Purple Haze: 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo

When I first saw this 965, my first thought was that I had seen it’s long lost brother before, and indeed, I had – late last year Paul wrote up a super-low mile Porsche 968 with the same color combination. The question for many (including me) was why anyone would have originally selected these shades post 1974, but as one person pointed out, if you want bland go buy a Camry. This 965 is anything BUT bland, with it’s purple on purple hue, flashy polished HRE wheels and (gulp) 739 rear wheel horsepower. Think you’d driven something faster? Unless it starts with “Boeing”, that’s not likely. Take a look then at this monster 911 Turbo:

Well, there you go. If you want a modded to the extreme 911 Turbo, it doesn’t get much better than this in the air cooled era. While most of the modifications are very desirable, I can’t help but feel that the very pricey HRE wheels look out of place on this car. Were it mine and I still wanted some polish on those wheels, I’d probably select something like the Speedline-inspired RHs linked below:

Like many of the modded cars we feature (especially of the Porsche variety), the modifications alone are worth at least the asking price in original dollars. This obviously won’t be a daily driver for anyone, but at least with some miles on the body and engine the new owner won’t be afraid to drive it, unlike that investment-grade 968 Paul wrote up. For $60,000, the price doesn’t seem as outrageous as the color combination and it appears well maintained. It also appears this is an expensive car to run, so the entry price will only be the beginning, but you’d be in rarefied air – both in power and color selection. Feeling bold?

1991 Porsche 911 Turbo

Searching for the 993 Turbo posted earlier, I happened upon this slightly-older Black Beauty. While the 993 may be the pinnacle of the classic (smaller) 911 shape, it’s no secret my tastes lie more firmly in the 80s. Thus, the 964 body style of the 911 gets me going a little more than the 993, and this 1991 Turbo is no exception. With some fine engine work and just 54k miles, this murdered-out 911 is something special. My garage is full up on black Germans for the moment, so it’s up to someone else to decide if this 450hp beast is really worth its $50k asking price.

Sinister? You bet, and that was before Porsche laid down the black-on-black scheme. Wide body 911’s are the best looking kind, and Turbo power reinforces the look. This example has only 53,000 miles, is clean in and out, and has some very nice and tasteful mods. It’s still a 911 Turbo, but it goes to 11!
911 Turbos are excellent cars on their own. They’re more comfortable, better equipped, safer and more complete vehicles than the 930. Antilock brakes, dual airbags, real live climate control, power steering and other amenities propelled the 965 (this generation Turbo’s model desination) into the 1990’s supercar elite.
These cars also respond really well with some minor tweaks. For more grip, the front and rear struts were replaced with adjustable JIC Cross pieces, and the wheels were repainted in black for an even more sinister look! New Michelin Pilot Sport Cup rubber is at all four corners, and the brake calipers were powdercoated red while everything was apart. This car sticks, and it corners like a slot car!
Power is easy to come by in a turbo car, but safe power is another matter. That requires effort and money, and both went into this car. For more spark to quell detonation, the heads were sent out and machined to accept twin spark plugs per cylinder. While they were out, Ollie’s in California did a full valve job and trued the head gasket surfaces. A full Electromotive XDi setup replaces the distributor with coil packs and a magnetic crank trigger, allowing the new JE Pistons to run their 10:1 compression with ease. More power comes courtesy of the fully mapped Blitz dual solenoid boost controller and TiAl 46mm wastegate. Air now flows through Porsche Motorsport silicone intercooler and turbo hoses. Three hours of dyno tuning put down more than 380whp!
Thousands of dollars in service costs are documented back to the original owner, with minor issues resulting in service visits. The warm up regulator was replaced with a digital unit, the A/C saw constant servicing (it IS a black-on-black Texas car) and a new heavy duty clutch puts the power down. Much of this work was done at Sports Car Repair, Inc. in Houston, with the motor rebuild less than 500 miles ago!

I might prefer some different wheels, and the fat airbag wheel is incongruous on a car this lithe and quick, but these are nitpicks. It’s a great-looking and well-taken care of 911 Turbo whose styling, and 50% price, suit me more than the 993.
