Afternoon Accessories: OZ Racing 17×8 Magnesium wheels

I still remember well the first time I got to hold a magnesium wheel – I was at Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, and a bit of a joking and free-loving owner of a Pantera literally threw one – complete with steam-roller tire – towards me with the tagline “Here, catch!”. Grimacing in the impending pain I was about to experience as this dishwasher-box sized wheel lobbed at me came closer, I reached out and caught it, fearful that I would be on the hook for the wheel’s cost when I dropped it even though this joker wouldn’t be by my hospital bed for the multi-week recovery from my collapsed lungs and broken ribs. To my shock, I caught the wheel, and my tensed muscles experienced nearly no shock. It was comical how light the wheel was; something I wouldn’t experience again until I picked up a Formula One Ferrari wheel years later. Today, there is a set of ultra-rare OZ Racing wheels on Ebay for a very reasonable price:

Party Like It’s 1989 Week: 1989 Audi Coupe

While we’re still a year away from importing the first 1990 Audi S2s, in 1989 Audi released the new Coupe. The car the United States got started coming in late 1989, and while the world received several engine and drivetrain options, the U.S. only got the quattro variant with the 2.3 20V “7A” powerplant for two years before the Coupe was pulled from these shores. That hasn’t stopped plenty of people from making S2 replicas while we wait until 2015 to start importing real S2s. However, for something a little bit different, the first 1989 coupes are now importable. This particular variant is a front wheel drive replacement for the aging Coupe GT model, though it effectively picked up the same 2.3 10V “NG” drivetrain that the United States saw in the 1987.5 Coupe GT “Special Build” models. Not often thought of as an option, one of these handsome front drivers is for sale today on Ebay.de:

4WD Week: 1990 Volkswagen Passat GT Syncro G60 Variant

We’ve gone on at length about the wonderful German cars we haven’t gotten to experience here in the U.S., and the 4WD Theme Week offers us a chance to expose even more gems that were not imported. For various reasons including low overall sales number and a fear of cannibalizing Audi’s already small all-wheel drive market share in the early 1990s, Volkswagen chose not to import many of their Syncro cars. True, we did get the Audi 80/4000 based Quantum, but the third generation Passat introduced the first non-Audi based floorpan for the larger Volkswagen. What it was based on instead was the Golf, meaning that it could use a lightly modified version of the Golf’s Syncro system and engine choices. Hence, while the American market did get the great 2.0 16V in the front-wheel drive Passat, Europe and Canada got the more potent, tunable and all-wheel drive supercharged Passat G60 Syncro. They were expensive and rare cars when new, but can be found from time to time. Today there is a decent looking one on Ebay.de:

Top notch runner until 02.01.2008 due to Audi quattro purchase . 240km/hr speedometer was not an issue here . G-Lader updated. Larger Pulley installed , chip tuning . Thereafter, about 8,000 km covered.
Boost gauge installed cleanly. Oil cooler installed . Trailer hitch. Original aluminum wheels with 205 ‘s and of course, all-wheel – drive !

Total mileage 220,000 km .

After taking it off the road I began rewiring for sound system – cables are already installed but sill panels etc. still need to be built back . Parts for all available.
Driver’s seat has minor damage. Floor should be cleaned. I have not discovered rust.
Unfortunately , according to the extended length of time , the starter froze, ie currently does not start.
The car is quite smart , but needs an expert hand.

Admittedly, this isn’t the nicest Passat G60 Syncro I’ve ever seen; but they’re rare cars and this one is reasonably clean outside – which is the most important part. The combination of Passat, all-wheel drive, supercharger and wagon isn’t everyone’s favorite, but I really like the grill-less early B3 cars; they’re a clean and sharp looking design. Some work will be needed to get this one back into shape. Unfortunately, that may not come; the Passat isn’t highly sought after and remains a bit of a novelty compared to the more desirable Golf models. Further, VWs of this era weren’t known for their stellar reliability, construction or great materials – and the early Syncro systems in the Golf and Passat weren’t particularly good all-wheel drive systems. Still, it’s a neat car to see and a small reminder of the many cars we never received here in the U.S. Hopefully, someone will resurrect this car to it’s former glory!

Wagon Week: 1993 and 1994 Audi S2 Avants

I recently wrote up a few quattro GmbH specials that didn’t come to the U.S.. While over the past few years Audi enthusiasts here have spent countless hours and dollars recreating one of those cars, the RS4, from U.S. spec S4 sedans and avants. But rewind a decade and it was this car that many were trying to reproduce – the Audi S2. As crashed or heavily used 200 20V and S4s came up for sale, the reality of creating a S2 on U.S. shores became a possibility. Most utilized the popular Coupe Quattro chassis; a few enterprising individuals built S2 sedans – rare even in Europe. But despite being one of the most popular wagons of all time, the S2 Avant was seldom chosen because the small wagon was never brought to the U.S., meaning you’d have to not only import the chassis but then convert it. Of course, an easier way would just be to buy a whole factory S2, a possibility now that prices have dropped though we’re still a few years from these being legal on our shores. Today I have two examples to dream about:

There’s a lot to like about this S2; Europa Blue Mica is one of the prettiest colors of this generation of Audi, the Avus alloys are perfectly suited to the design, and it has quattro-script cloth seats. Unfortunately, it’s missing the front bumper, but as many choose to pursue the RS2 look this isn’t something that can’t be easily overcome. Personally I’d go for the original bumper as I prefer the slightly more square look of the S2, and since they’re shared with a few models they can be had reasonably easily with some searching. At $7,500 it’s pretty appropriately priced and looks good – the seller indicates that if the car is fixed the price will go up, which would probably make it fall into line with this Black 1993:

If you’re not a fan of cloth or the Avus alloys, this black 1993 has the earlier 5 spoke Ronal alloys which look a bit more old-school than the Avus wheels. With grey leather, the same mileage as the blue car but no damage this car seems like a reasonable deal:

For the price, either of these cars is pretty reasonable. They fall into line with similar condition S6 Avants in the U.S., and anyone who has gone through the S2 conversion would agree that the entry price on these cars is probably well worth not going through the conversion headache and expense. In a few short years these cars will be prime for importation and likely initially be a touch cheaper, though I have a feeling that there will be a ripe market importing good examples for a premium. For some, there won’t be any replacing the original! I’d still choose a S6 plus Avant over these first, but these small wagons sure are neat!

1990 Audi Coupe Quattro 20V

In 1989, Audi’s lineup in the U.S. was pretty flat. Although they had renamed both the B3 and C3 chassis to fall into line with the rest of the world nomenclature and the B3 was a “new” car, the performance of both chassis relative to their competitors was pretty poor. Indeed, Audi’s only claim to fame was that the retained the Quattro drive train option. In Europe, though, Audi released two brilliant engines that would find their way to the U.S. shores in 1990; the awesome all-aluminum 32V V8, and the 20 valve version of their venerable inline-5. While immediately everyone thinks of the turbocharged version, the normally aspirated 2.3 liter version, named the 7A, was a solid performer of its own. The 7A, like the 2.0 16V in Volkswagens, was only available in the U.S. in two cars; the 4 door 90 Quattro 20V and the new Coupe Quattro.

With scandals hurting Audi’s image and poor performance to price value compared to most of its rivals, both 20V versions sold slowly and were only available for two years. Still, the Coupe Quattros developed a cult following for their all-weather hatchback practicality. Because of that few remain in good condition, unlike this Ginster Yellow Coupe Quattro for sale today:

Very Rare 1990 Audi Coupe Quattro. Extremely Rare Early Build in Factory Ginster Yellow with Black interior. 6/89 build date. Carbon Fiber Drive-shaft and Bag O’ Snakes Stainless Steel Headers separate the early builds from the later builds after September or October they did away with both. as well the computer control switch is located on the dash and the later models have it on the wiper stalk.

Only 1730 of these came to the USA in 2 years, of which 1400 in 1990. Every Interior Light, Cluster Light, Everything Works. Cruise Control is the only thing that isnt working. The color combination makes this car 1 of only a few. The best part of this car is the care it has had and maintenance history which shows in the condition it is in today 24 years later.

145k Miles of which I just put 3k miles on a road trip with it. did not burn or drip a drop of oil and the compression was done on this car with all cylinders either 170 or 175 which is amazing. H&R Sport Springs which are very firm with Boge Turbo Gas Struts. Valve Cover Powder Coated and new Gasket installed about 6k miles ago. Ja-Max Upper Strut Brace Stray Bar. 034 Short Shift Kit is as tight as any new car. 034 injector upgrade kit with adapter set which makes a huge difference on performance and gas mileage. I averaged 27.6mpg on this last road trip averaging 70+mph which is 3500 rpm and got this mileage. Imagine a 6th gear or any other 5sp tranny with a tall 5th gear and this car would get over 30mpg easy and perform.

I have had many of these coupes and this is by far the best one, tightest, drives tight and no shakes or ticks. Engine runs perfect, tight and zero ticks. Synthetic only. Also has the Euro Rear Lights and center tub. OEM RS2 Badge. Euro S2 Steering Wheel. Original Windshield, Original Quattro Floor Mats, Mint Leather interior. Cargo Cover still works as it should, no broken parts. Most are missing or broken. All interior lights work, cluster, door, trunk, gauges. Zero Rust anywhere. garaged and meticulously taken care of.

This car sold 2 years ago from Carrera Motors off the Showroom floor for 13k. That should tell you about the condition of the car. I have the receipt to show. Original Wheels will be sold with the car and they have $800 Michelin Pilot Alpina Studless Snow tires on them. This car will go anywher with these on there. The Wheels on the car do not go with the car unless I get full Price for the car. They are perfect condition Keskin 16″ Wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Z rated Tires. Not Cheap!

Without a doubt, Ginster Yellow Coupe Quattros are the most rare of an already rare breed. Reports vary on numbers, but figure less than 200 of these made it to the States. Couple that with one of the few remaining good condition Coupe Quattros that haven’t been snapped up for 20V Turbo conversions, and this is indeed a very rare sight. While for most cars, 144,000 miles wouldn’t be considered “low mileage”, the condition of this car seems to shrug that off. The owner has an extensive photo album available, documenting the low wear on the interior and exterior. The original Speedline alloys are included with the sale with mounted snow tires. They’re famously difficult to keep looking good and hard to properly refinish (ask me how), so it would be nice to see them in equally good shape as the car, but most owners seem to toss them in favor of larger stock.

There are a host of great upgrades with this car – the 034 Motorsports injectors are great replacements for the stock units which seldom function properly at this point, H&R springs and the Jamex stress bar are desirable to keep the original floaty ride in check, and the S2 wheel has a fantastic feel and just looks right. Most of the Ginster cars were early builds which includes the more desirable tubular header (dubbed the “Bag of snakes”) that is a work of art by itself. There is a solid community behind these cars that will both appreciate the condition of a mostly-stock yellow example and help the owner keep it running for many, many years and miles to come.

Now, the ask price – $8,750. Keeping in mind that the owner says at that price the car comes with both sets of wheels, you either get a few thousand dollars worth of wheels and tires with the package, or you could opt out and save a few dollars if they weren’t to your taste. Values on good condition Coupe Quattros seemed to spike a few years ago when people looking to make S2 clones were searching for the best possible chassis, but that trend has cooled and subsequently values have fallen a bit since then. Indeed, you can usually find a 20V Turbo equipped Coupe Quattro at this price point without too much difficulty. In that light, the price seems a little bit high if your goal is to make a 20V Turbo Quattro monster. However, when you factor in the wheels and the general condition of the car, along with the exclusivity of Ginster Yellow and the relative originality, I think the price is just about spot on. Most enthusiasts wouldn’t flinch at a clean original E30 325 in this price range, and the Coupe Quattro is equally deserving of that respect. Buy it and enjoy the ride knowing you’re not likely to see another one like this anywhere you drive.

Theme Week: 1998 Audi Cabriolet

The Audi Cabriolet was a rather unremarkable vehicle in the history of Audi, but nonetheless one worth highlighting. Seemingly as generic as its name implies, the Cabriolet was based on the B3 chassis, which was introduced in 1987 and featured design language that would carry Audi into the next century. Sold in some markets until 2000, this 1998 example represents the last year the Cabriolet was sold new in the US market. With its 172 horsepower, 2.7 liter V6 engine mated to a four speed automatic, it never set the world on fire with performance, but it struck a restrained, handsome pose. Even though Princess Diana sported one for a while in the 1990s, few people stateside took notice of Audi’s open roofed offering, opting for more exciting versions from companies like Saab and BMW at the time. As a result, these open roofed Audis can be had for not much cash, this example for sale in Long Island being one of them.

1998 Audi Cabriolet on eBay

1998 Audi Cabriolet VIN# WAUAA88G4WN001789 Black/Tan. This a very rare super clean Audi Cabriolet with only 86k original miles. The car runs, drives and looks great. Plus it has a Power Soft Top, Leather, Wood Trim, Premium Package and more. And we just serviced (for over $1,300) the car so it’s ready to go for the summer!

I have a soft spot for the Audi Cabriolet, which most likely comes from my attraction to obscure automobiles. Most of these Cabriolets have been driven hard or scrapped by now, so it’s nice to see a clean one like this surface. While it’s missing the Audi badge on the trunk, everything else looks pretty tidy. I’d say almost $6,000 is pushing it in terms of value. About $1,000 to $1,500 less would be just about right.

1997 Volkswagen Passat GLX VR6

Over the last decade, the popularity of the Volkswagen Passat has increased at a rapid rate in the US market. After a redesign in 1996 (in Europe) that saw a move to the B5 platform shared with the Audi A4, buyers aspiring for something a little bit nicer in their everyday sedan took note. This popularity wasn’t always the case with Volkswagen’s mid-sized offering. In the early to mid-1990s, the B4 Passat was a dark horse in the sedan wars. It was the choice for someone who wanted to stand out a bit and enjoy Teutonic qualities at a lower price of entry than your typical BMW or Audi. With its VR6 engine and available 5-speed manual, though, it was also the choice for performance minded consumers. Here we have a low mileage, one owner, final year B4 on offer.

Gorgeous 1997 VW Passat sedan, low miles, lady owned, non smoker. Nearly perfect in and out, meticulously maintained. This is a one owner car that has been carefully serviced and gargage kept. The pictures tell the story but feel free to ask questions before bidding.

I have known a few people that have owned B3 and B4 Passats. To put it mildly, they weren’t the most reliable of transportation. From electrical issues to broken trim pieces and window mechanisms going awry, these cars had a reputation for self destructing as the warranty neared its end or shortly thereafter. So it is rare to see one of these B4s roaming the streets in such good condition. I’ve rarely seen a B4 for sale at more than $5,000 these days, but this one, depending on interest, may push that over the mark just a little bit.

1991 Audi Quattro Coupe for sale in Seattle

A lot of attention is given to the first generation Audi Quattro, with its rich rallying heritage and crisp 80s styling.  The second generation succumbed to the typical weight gain that manufacturers seem to equate with progress, with the excuse that it was now more of a GT than a lightweight rally car. The n/a 2.3 liter put out 164hp, about the same as contemporary Corrados, but had more weight to carry around.  It wasn’t all bad though, as the new model came with a locking rear differential, carbon fiber center driveshaft, and a clean new look.

This example is surprisingly clean inside and out (look at the engine compartment!), probably in part thanks to only having covered a restrained 109k miles.  The squat Audi 90 shape still looks great today, especially with the S2 styling cues that the North American version got.  It’s too bad we missed out on the turbo engine, but that can be remedied with relative ease in the Audi/VW lines.  It’s for sale for $4900, well below the blue book.  Being this clean, it’s a tempting example of some 90s Quattro fun.
