One-Off: 1987 Porsche 959 Cabriolet

For fear of having three Porsche features in a row today, I’m going to go ahead with this post regardless. I typically avoid featuring air-cooled Porsches. The market seems saturated with them and values appear to be leveling off for run of the mill variants. In addition, as enthusiasts discover other Porsches that are more rare, such as the 944 Turbo, 968 and 928GTS, values increase for these cars and sometimes surpass their rear-engined counterparts. Those points considered, even though it isn’t fully air-cooled, you don’t see a 959 come up for sale every day. You especially don’t see the only example of a Porsche 959 Cabriolet come up for sale every day. When I first saw this car, it was like seeing a mirage. The transformation from coupe to convertible suits the lines of this 959 fairly well but I admit I did a double take upon seeing it. I knew this wasn’t an officially sanctioned Porsche. Perhaps growing up in the 1980s and seeing 959 bodykits on convertible Porsches reduced the wow factor a bit for me. Blame it on the crystal that aftermarket tuners were smoking back in that decade.

In any case, this one-off for sale in Italy came to be via an unfortunate accident back in 1998, when owner and Porsche racing driver Jürgen Lässig owned it. According to Top Gear, a company called Auto Becker in Germany purchased the wreck and went to work. What resulted is the work you see before you and comes replete with two windscreens (a Speedster version comes with the car which can be swapped in) as well as a hardtop made from the original roof. A US based collector once paid over three million Deutschmarks for this car after setting eyes on it at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Now it is up for sale again at an equally eye-watering price.

Tuner Tuesday: 1990 Alpina B10 BiTurbo

When it comes of tuned BMWs, there’s no shortage of examples. Indeed, there are far more tuners of the popular Munich brand than all the others combined. From ABC Exclusive to Zender, everyone had their hand at modifying some series car into something a bit more. Sometimes more was tasteful, and othertimes it was garish – but all the way along, no firm has been consistently more effective at producing a quality product than Alpina. From their roots as a semi-factory race effort in the 1970s right through the dealer-offered cars of today, Alpina’s results have always been top-notch redefinition of the basic car. And while they have subsequently built faster cars, for me the best examples of the ethos of Alpina and its relation to BMW has always been the B10 BiTurbo. BMW built the screaming S38 powered M5, but Alpina provided its clients a private jet for the road:

2016 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT S

There are two Mercedes-Benzes in the current lineup that really light my fire. That would be the evergreen G-Class and one of the newest arrivals, the AMG GT. This is a car that has taken the fight directly into the Porsche 911’s backyard, albeit in a different form. As has been noted by the folks over at flüssig magazine, this car bears a bit of a resemblance to the timeless Porsche 928, especially when you consider the sloping rear end and the way the bumper tapers inward towards the bottom edge. “It’s the 928’s successor,” states Andy McCulley, flüssig magazine contributor and 928 owner. I always wondered what would have come had Porsche followed up on its great GT car. Well, Mercedes-Benz grabbed the ring and ran with it.

10K Friday: S Car Go Row Row Row Your Own

Last week’s 10K Friday Colorful Carriers was a bit of a letdown; sure, the colors were great, but the only manual was the B6 V8 S4 Avant, and while it was a cool package there was no denying the trepidation with which I’d approach that particular package. To remedy that issue, this week I’m again focusing on some haulers capable of hauling; we’ve lost the color pallet but all of these Avants are turbocharged and manual, just the way most like it. So, this time around, which is the pick of the litter?

2007 Mercedes-Benz S600 Designo Graphite Edition

On Tuesday of this week, I wrote up a crazy modified Maybach 57S. Beefed up with crazy amounts of horsepower, it was decidedly not understated even though it was dressed all in black. Around the same time, Andrew wrote up a 750Li, talking about how people never give them a second look, but they offer extreme luxury in a very understated package for a modest price. In this vein, I’d like to offer for your consideration this 2007 Mercedes-Benz S600; underneath, it’s the same W221 chassis the Maybach was designed around. That means ridiculous amounts of luxuries and technology at your fingertips. While this model isn’t the nutter AMG S65 model with 600 horsepower (the same drivetain that was in the 57S), it’s still not exactly a wall flower; the M275 was rated at 510 horsepower and 612 lb.ft of torque. If that’s not enough to give you a kick in the seat of the pants, your other ride is probably a F22 Raptor. On top of the Industrial Age power, this particular S600 was ordered with the exclusive “Designo” package in Grapite; it added some beautiful Nappa leather and matte wood accents that really dress up the interior. Outside, while the W221 isn’t the most attractive S-Class produced, I think pulls off the rare feat of looking much better than the W220 it replaced and also better than the newer refreshed W221 and W222 that followed it. And outside, what’s special isn’t that it’s a crazy, slightly overdone AMG adorned model, but a standard S600 – refined, understated, and dare I say attractive:
