2002 BMW M5

00m0m_9zBgZYI2tL0_600x450

When I think of someday branching out beyond cars from 1988, one of the first that comes to mind is the business-class rocket E39 M5. What they lack in rarity they make up for by being one of the best sport sedans ever made, with the total package of comfort, speed, power, and handling. Today we have a low-mileage example with essentially no description, but hints pointing towards it being a loved weekender. I dig the M-stripes on the front spoiler mixing up the otherwise-stealth black on balck. A carbon lip appears to be the only modification, and is a subtly good-looking one at that. I’d like some more info before I bought and you can certainly find E39s cheaper, but less than 70k miles and good care would make this worth close to its asking price.

Double Take: 1991 BMW M5 – Time to Buy?

We’ve been on an M5 kick lately, and for good reason – the M5 is truly one of the best cars that can do virtually anything an enthusiast asks; it can be a luxury car, a sports car, carry 4 comfortably or 5 in a pinch, and has enough menacing look to make you proud of your carefully purchased pride and joy. But while the E34 has remained a performance bargain over the past few years, like most of the M-crowd from the late 1980s these cars are quickly appreciating; Hagerty calculates the average value of E34 M5s have increased 30 to 40 percent over the past few months. That’s a huge jump, and could be the start of a trend amongst these third generation super-sedans from BMW; so, is now the time to buy the last of the good, affordable examples? We have two to contemplate today, the first of which isn’t a stranger to these pages – I wrote this car up back in April:

1988 BMW 320i Touring – REVISIT

$_57

Despite strong bidding, this 1988 BMW 320i Touring failed to meet the reserve the seller was trying for; now with new 15″ Euroweave Nogaro-colored wheels that look great and a “Buy It Now” price of $13,900, is this the E30 Touring for you?

Paul was right that the Tourings are coming. Perhaps some owners have been holding on to them as forbidden gems and are realizing that, as the importation restrictions are lifted, they will become more and more common and are looking to cash out now. Today’s is a clean little wagon with some eccentricities among the nice choices; one sport seat/one comfort belong to the prior, the M20B25 and 5-speed conversion well in the latter. Bidding is hot, so clearly people are still more interested in finding one here than bringing it in themselves.

Tuner Tuesday: 1998 Dinan S3 BMW M3 Sedan

If earlier’s Sir Mix-A-Lot’s 911 Turbo didn’t quench your lust for all things purple, I’m happy to offer another Barney-colored treat for you. However, unlike the friendly and more than somewhat irritating children’s star, the object of interest here is the very popular and quickly become a classic E36 M3 sedan. Offering practicality, a stiff chassis with lighter weight than the coupes, this car has turned into one of the more sought after BMWs in recent history. This is especially poignant considering the current state of the rest of the 1980s M market; if you don’t jump on the bandwagon now, you’re likely to miss out. Further heightening the appeal of this sedan is the more rare shade of Techno Violet; a polarizing but popular color, and of course the full spectrum of Dinan S3 upgrades. Take a look at this purple people eater:

Tuner Tuesday: 1974 BMW 2002 M20 Turbo – REVISIT

The Manofied-modded 1974 2002 M20 Turbo from last month remains up for sale; I still believe the asking price is too high but it’s a great looking build overall. What price would you be willing to pay for this re-imagined obrut?

The below post originally appeared on our site March 25, 2014:

It’s been a few months since I last looked at a 2002 Turbo replica. Like the 924 Carrera GT, the 911 RS and Audi RS2, the 2002 Turbo is one of those rare and expensive car models that spawns a fair amount of recreations. The nice thing about replicas, though, is that you really don’t need to worry about damaging the value of one of the original and expensive models; for enthusiasts looking to buy into that market, you can also usually purchase one of these tributes at a fraction of the price of the original. While the last model I looked at was a pretty true to original replica, today’s example has gone mild to wild with a M20 swap and a turbo thrown in just for fun:
