Feature Listing: 2000 Mercedes-Benz G500 Cabriolet

I have to admit, I’m not normally drawn to trucks or even cars that masquerade as trucks. You know that expression ‘It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand!’? They’re right. I don’t understand. They’re loud, uncomfortable, hugely unreliable, rust quickly and accelerate slowly. They get horrible fuel mileage, launch their occupants out when they crash, and aren’t really particularly attractive. And I’m pretty thankful that I’m married to a woman who generally agrees with me when it comes to these things. That’s why I was particularly surprised when she rather unceremoniously announced that she’d be happy to drive around in a Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen. The surprise was doubled because in spite of my claims above, the G-wagen is something I love too.

For the last few decades, the G models have remained effective unchanged. While models like the Jeep Wrangler and Toyota FJ-Cruiser have tried re-imagined retro-rough styling, the Geländewagen marches on as an unapologetic Dinosaur from the late Cretaceous period. Sure, it’s been updated with swanky interiors and more modern electronics and engines. Indeed, you can get some pretty nutter supercharged models if you need to pummel trails that much more quickly. And the Geländewagen has opened up into a new crowd who doesn’t hit the trails, but fits large wheels and blacks out everything. It is one of the few mass appeal, truly do-anything vehicles ever produced. There are plenty of models to choose from, but the ones that always capture my attention are the rare Cabriolets such as this 2000 G500:

Tuner Tuesday: 1989 Ruf BTR3 Cabriolet

I have to admit, I really don’t get fast convertibles. You could argue that the top down lets you hear the roar of the exhaust, I suppose. Or you could suggest that the faster the acceleration and higher the top speed, the more alive you feel as the wind rushes through your hair. It’s not that I don’t think certain fast convertibles aren’t attractive, mind you, or appealing in their own way. And some modern convertibles are downright amazing in their ability to channel the blowing atmosphere away from you. But in all honesty, once you’re above highway speeds, the expensive radio and million plus horsepower are lost upon me, obscured in a veil of churning oxygen, nitrogen, and other trace elements. Perhaps I’m in the minority and it could have to do with the not-always awesome New England weather, but I’d prefer a sunroof coupe in most applications – with some notable vintage exceptions like pre-War cars and Pagoda SLs. Of course, I suppose if you argued that you weren’t going to break the speed limit (okay, but not by much…) or head to the track, then the convertible arrangement offers you plenty of speed in for your driving pleasure and the thrill of the open-air experience. 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Not everyone likes a flashy car, but I think even those of us who prefer to enjoy our winding roads in less noticeable fashion can still appreciate the vibrancy created by a sports car draped in a pastel color. And perhaps it is precisely that flash that explains why this Blue Turquoise 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet only has 9,471 miles on it. Either way Porsche has consistently made a habit of making its cars available in these sorts of colors and they will always attract a good deal of notice, both on the streets and at cars & coffee as well as on the second-hand market. For second-hand cars the issue as always is just how much is such a color worth and I think this auction attempts to stretch those bounds to test their limits. I love seeing these cars come up for auction: they’re bright and interesting and easily stand apart from the myriad others on the market. They bring a splash of joy to the droves of silver, black, and white we come across so regularly.

1988 Porsche 930 Cabriolet

I will end this week in a manner similar to how I began it: the Porsche 930. This time we’ll have our eye on a Turbo Cabriolet rather than Coupe, but like the Forest Green Metallic 930 from Monday this one also comes in a unique dark, though non-metallic, shade. The original buyer of this 930 appears to have borrowed from the Mercedes paint studio selecting Azuritblau for the exterior to go along with a dark blue interior. It seems rare to come across a shade like this that is non-metallic so for those with a strong dislike for metallic paint in general this seems like a nice opportunity. And as we begin to slip into the Fall driving season there are few betters options than a Cabriolet. Given the few model years Porsche even produced an air-cooled Turbo Cabriolet that makes this one particularly rare to come across and it’s definitely a looker. Here we have a Azuritblau 1988 Porsche 930 Cabriolet, located in Atlanta, with only 25,764 miles on it.

1990 Porsche 944S2 Cabriolet

For as long as the 944 was in Porsche’s lineup, it’s surprising it took so long for an al fresco version to come about. It wouldn’t be until the end of the 1980s and the 944 was in its twilight years that the 944S2 Cabriolet would appear. A mere 2,402 examples would find their way stateside for those seeking an alternative to the usual air-cooled convertible solution from Porsche. This 944S2 Cabriolet for sale in Florida is approaching 50,000 miles and looks sharp in Dove Blue Metallic.
