How Low Will It Go?: 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S Andial 3.8

Edit 11/17/2017: After three years with a over $230,000 asking price with the same seller, ask on this neat Andial-modified Carrera S has finally dropped to $149,993. Of note is that in over three years, the picture, description and mileage have never changed. A neat car, but buyers should do some heavy investigation before the deposit. Is this car a sign that the air-cooling market has also struck the 993, or is this just an aberration?

The 993 is, without a doubt, one of the more desirable 911s in the range of cars that span several generations. Enthusiasts agree, having quickly pushed prices up on these models over prior generations like the Carrera 3.2 and 964. In fact, it doesn’t ever seem like prices on these cars came down much – as soon as the 996 arrived, faithful flocked towards the older models, snapping them up. Especially sought are the Carrera 4S and Turbo models – but there are some really rare gems hidden that pop up from time to time. Obviously, the ultra-rare Turbo S, Carrera RS and GT2 models are a great example – quite rare indeed. I’ve also previously written up an even more rare Andial Twin-Plug Twin-Turbo, one of the reported 19 assembled by the noted factory approved race tuner. Today’s car, like that car, mixes some of the styles of the rare cars that we didn’t get or didn’t see many of. The base is the already semi-rare Carrera 2S; like the 4S, the body shell was shared with the Turbo, but unlike the all-wheel drive variant, the Turbo’s upgraded brakes didn’t carry over. To solve that, the owner of this car turned to Andial – with a host of exterior upgrades to make it look like a Turbo S and a host of RS-spec 3.8 upgrades to make it go well, this is one tidy package – and exceedingly rare:

2005 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe

There are good and bad ways to sell a car. You can provide a wide array of pictures under different lighting and from different angles utilizing shots taken from a distance and detail shots close up. You can show all of the body panels, the full interior, and while not always useful a shot of the engine never hurts. The ad text could follow a similar tack: details on the model, history, and available documentation. There’s no need to go overboard, but you put yourself in the buyer’s position and provide the answers to the questions you’d expect to ask were you buying the car.

Or, you can take a seemingly random array of photos under poor lighting and provide only the barest details in the ad. This seller has chosen the latter course for the photos and a mix of the two for the ad text. So it definitely could be less informative, but from a picture perspective there’s a lot to be desired here. But we shall persevere because the point of this 911 is the exterior color and that we get to see: Mexico Blue.

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S

There are plenty of times when I feel like I feature too many very expensive 911s. The problem, of course, is the 911 isn’t a terribly inexpensive car to start with so even the pricing is somewhat relative. But really it’s just that many of these high-priced examples are very hard to pass up. Guess where this one falls? I couldn’t pass it up.

We’re sticking with the theme of interesting colors that we’ve been running with across the site this week and here we have one of Porsche’s most interesting darker shades. This is a Vesuvio Metallic 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S, located in Cleveland, with a mere 4,848 miles on it. So we have a Carrera S – one of the most desirable 993 models – in a very rare and striking color with ridiculously low mileage. That’s not all. It also came well optioned with sport seats, sport suspension, and the factory aerokit (along with a few other options). The total package makes for an extremely rare 993 and one that should attract tons of attention.

What’s not to love? It’s $170K. That’s A LOT!

2013 Porsche 911 Club Coupe – 1 of 13

It seems there are so many 911 Club Coupes these days that I can’t even recall which are intended to celebrate which milestone. The one we see here, a 2013 Porsche 911 Club Coupe, was built to celebrate 60 years of Porsche clubs worldwide. It’s a more general celebration than the 2016 Club Coupe (and 2006 Club Coupe before that), which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Porsche Club of America.

So what distinguishes the 2013 version? Based off of the Carrera S Coupe, it came with a special Brewster Green exterior contrasted with an Espresso interior. The color combination is quite striking though in a much more subdued way than the extremely bright Club Blue of the 2016 version. To bring additional performance the Powerkit was included as standard along with ceramic brakes, Sport Chrono and PASM. Only 13 were built and the lucky buyers were selected by lottery and asked to pay just over $175K. Like with many Porsche special editions you could spec a similar 911 for less money, though you wouldn’t get the special exterior paint.

Speed Yellow 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe

Alright, let’s continue with the value theme, but now we’re going to leave the air-cooled market behind. Once we’ve done that reasonable values become much more the norm. Not only that, but we get better performance and typically far fewer miles. Those preferring the air-cooled models and the analog versus digital nature of most earlier cars, I hear you. But once you step into this century you really do get a lot for your money.

For this one we have a very sexy Speed Yellow 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe, located in Oregon, with 22,029 miles on it. I definitely could be accused of finding the 997 a bit boring, a bit too refined, but this one isn’t boring at all. With the Carrera S you get more displacement and more displacement equals more power. In this case that means 355 hp all being delivered to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual.

2006 Porsche 997S, only 22k miles!

This is a stunning local Porsche that is very well equipped. The Carrera S was the largest displacement engine in 2006 with a 3.8 litres and 355 horsepower. Hard to find in many Porsches today, three pedals and 6-speed manual transmission. This car is very special in how it is optioned inside and out. It has all the top of the line options like Sport Chrono Plus, Bose high-end sound system, and Full Leather interior. The exterior is Speed Yellow, and is protected by 3m clear paint protection, so it is just like new. It has the optional 19 alloys with painted crests and Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. The sound from the 3.8 is upgraded with factory option Sports Exhaust that comes with special chrome tips. The stance is widened from the factory with 5mm wheel spacers to improve handling and fill out the wheel wells. This is a very striking 911 and for me definitely one of the better looking examples of the 997. Speed Yellow is really bright and that won’t be for everyone, but it’s a nice departure from all of the blacks and silvers of the world. The mostly black interior contrasts perfectly with that yellow exterior and is accented by yellow belts in the interior. It’s just the right mix of bright and dark. The curves are filled out wonderfully and it still possesses that distinct 911 shape. With sport seats and the aforementioned manual transmission this Carrera S retains the long tradition of combining the most of performance and luxury that has long been Porsche’s trademark.

We can certainly quibble over the merits of the water-cooled 911s relative to the original air-cooled models, but there’s no debating that the performance of these modern 911s is near unmatched for the money. Bidding here sits at $40,100 – that’s lower than both of my previous features: a 911SC and 964 that each showed well above 100K miles. I love the early 911s and the classic 911 has been a part of me nearly my whole life. But if you just want the performance, then this is the way to go.

Vesuvio Metallic 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S

Vesuvio Metallic: another in a line of Porsche colors seen so rarely that I can never remember whether I have actually come across it before. The name perhaps comes from the volcano of similar name. I’m not actually sure, but the color certainly looks volcanic in a deep yet sparkling charcoal with hints of purple. It’s a tough color to pin down as evidenced by the pictures here. In the shade the dark grey dominates and you might be forgiven for not recognizing the purple tones. In the sun, sadly not really shown here, the purple shines through bringing some vibrancy to all of that darkness. I like colors that shift and change with the light and this is a pretty rare one.

I am generally a big fan of the factory aero kit on the 993. It extends the lines enough to draw the eye and lengthen the shape of the car. It doesn’t have the iconic 911 whale tail, but the wing still looks in its proper place. All of that is true with this 993. But then I see a 911 like this one and I start to wonder if I’m crazy! I think I could manage to live with either one.

Perhaps the only thing I don’t care for with this C2S is the asking price. The C2S is a very desirable model, and this is a fine looking example that is single owner, is said to come with a fully documented service history, and comes in a rare color with some desirable options. But $115K is a lot to ask for a 993 with 72K miles. Granted, that it has those miles is a good thing for many. It’s still very reasonable mileage and also enough that additional miles shouldn’t hurt its value. It can be driven and enjoyed just as Porsche intended. But with that should come a reduction in value and this asking price doesn’t seem to be taking that into account.

This isn’t a unique problem to this car or even to the 911, though sellers have at times seemed slow to adjust to the air-cooled market, which I do understand. Still this is a really nice looking and unique 911 and I think it should (eventually) make a new owner quite happy.

1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S – Tiptronic S

I will fully admit that I was pretty disappointed when I saw that this 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S was equipped with Tiptronic S rather than a manual transmission. It looked so promising as I made my way through the initial photos, especially once I realized it wasn’t black, but rather a very attractive dark metallic green (specifically Forest Green Metallic). The color combination was right, the condition of the paint looked phenomenal, and the interior looked clean and in really nice shape. And then the gear shift lever stuck out like a sore thumb. Oh well. I still think this 911 is worth featuring and investigating further, in part because I don’t really see the C2S very often with an automatic (more on that below), but also because there may be buyers specifically on the look out for such a combination. Whether by preference or necessity not everyone wants a manual transmission so here we are and this one really is beautiful.

For sale is my beautiful and well-loved 1997 Carrera C2S with Tiptronic S transmission. It’s an ultra rare wide-body 993 finished in special-ordered Forest Green over Cashmere interior. It has a clean MD title and clean CarFax. Non-smoker. Always garaged. No accident. The car has 60k documented miles. I am the 4th owner. This C2S shows extremely well. I shudder to even call this a driver. It is a very clean car from the inside out. It was never abused, no rain, and absolutely no salty roads as evidenced by the corrosion/rust free undercarriage.

Interior
The interior is easily 9/10. The instruments and dash are clean, and no fading or cracking. The tan carpet is excellent with no stains or dirty spots anywhere (Yes, even the driver side carpeting). The optional draped leather seating is soft and in overall excellent shape. The driver’s seat has minor outboard bolster wear, not unusual after 60k miles of driving pleasure. Two sets of floor mats come with the car- the original tan mats in very good condition, and new black mats should you prefer some darker contrast. Headliner is clean. All electricals are functional as they should. Driver’s door check-strap repaired prior to my ownership- no issues or odd noises. Heat works great and A/C blows cold.

Exterior
The body and paint are in excellent condition. I meticulously performed paint-correction on the car about 1 year ago to address some minor swirling. To this day, the paint still glistens with deep wet clarity you can only achieve with dark paints. I would rate the exterior 8.5 to 9/10. The car has some paint scratches during removal of the old stone guards. This didn’t bother me enough to warrant repainting the rear fenders. The windshield has no stone damage/crack. All glass are as new. This is a no accident car. All panels are original to the car. The front bumper, hood, and fenders were resprayed prior to my ownership for rock chips. Paint match is perfect! Expel clear bra protects the front end from any future chipping. Seals and trim pieces are in excellent condition. This car was obviously garaged and covered its entire life. Both headlight glass lenses are in great shape. Fog lamps like new. Tail lamps look as new. Wheels are factory original 17” Cup 2s with 225/45 fronts and 255/40 rears, with 80% tread depth remaining. All wheels are in excellent condition with no curb marks. Brake pads and rotors are in great shape. All 4 calipers recently refinished to correct some clear coat peeling so commonly seen at this age. The worn out original suspension was replaced with Bilstein HD and H&R spring combo. Front lower control arm bushings replaced with red Walrods. The handling is fantastic!

Undercarriage
The undercarriage is very clean and dent-free. All wheel wells have been scrubbed and dressed. Drain tubes in the front tub are present.

Mechanicals
This C2S runs like a champ, and pulls strongly in every gear. I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere. No CELs. It idles smoothly and revs easily throughout the rpm range. It burns little, if any oil at all. I confirm this using the dipstick to manually monitor oil level. The last leak-down test performed at 58,800 miles: All Cylinder less than 5% (receipt included). Original heat exchangers, catalytic converter, and mufflers are in excellent condition. All maintenance is up to date. Valve covers are dry. Timing chain covers have minor seep, 1-2 drops after a drive then none after.

This well-sorted 993 comes complete with both keys, all manuals, air compressor, tool kit, jack, spare tire, and service history/receipts. Don’t underestimate the value of a well-maintained Porsche. No deferred maintenance $$$. This example is one of the best looking wide-body cars out there. I’ve disclosed everything I know, but PPIs highly encouraged. You will not be disappointed!

Purely on appearance this appears to be one of the better kept 911s that I’ve come across. The current owner clearly has put in a good deal of effort to get the paint looking its best and it shows. I’m sure on closer inspection a few flaws will be visible – this is after all a 20-year-old car with 60K miles on it – but it’s tough to ask for too much more unless you’re looking at an ultra-low-mileage garage queen. That isn’t what this C2S is or should be so I’m impressed. The interior shows a little more wear, but still it looks in fine shape too. This 993 also looks to be well maintained and received a decent amount of servicing around 1K miles ago. The seller reports a small amount of oil seepage and like with yesterday’s 911 a PPI should sort out our level of concern. For someone in search of one of the best 911 models, but who requires (or desires) Tiptronic this looks like an excellent candidate to pursue further.

My other area of interest here is price. I’ll admit I really don’t have a good sense of the value of a C2S with Tiptronic S. I almost never see them for sale. I know it’s lower than a comparable manual-equipped C2S, but by how much? Funny enough, this isn’t the only Tiptronic C2S on the market at the moment. I found at least two others! For a model I so rarely see at all to find three with the more rare automatic transmission is itself strange. So I’m curious about where this auction will go. Were I looking for a 993 this wouldn’t be the car for me, but I’m always interested in where the market lies for particular models and this one is no different. Stay tuned!

For those who are fans of one of Porsche’s lesser seen blues this Zenith Blue Metallic 1997 Porsche 911 Carrera S makes for a very interesting option. Though you really do need to be a fan of blue because the exterior theme is continued in the interior giving this 911 a fairly monotone, but rare, appearance. As one of the prettier designs the 911 has ever seen this Carrera S looks really good in this color. It’s a little subdued rather than eye-catching like Riveria Blue, but still possesses enough life that you’ll want to pay plenty of attention to it if you see it on the street.

I actually have featured this 911 once before. It was a couple years ago and on offer from a different seller so it seemed worthwhile to revisit with this listing. Not much has changed since that first sale with only a couple hundred miles having been added to the odometer. Everything else presents mostly the same. Like before it’s not entirely original as this 911 has a set of yellow Turbo S brake calipers along with the 993 Turbo tail. That really brings a turbo-look appearance to this C2S as the tail pairs with the wide turbo rear. It looks great, but of course those who prefer the non-whale tail appearance of the wide-body Carrera S might be slightly disappointed. The seller hasn’t provided us much in the way of details so it might be worth looking back at the previous feature and its ad to help fill in some gaps. All in all a sexy looking 911 and one that is pretty rare given its combination of model and color.

1998 Porsche 911 Carrera S … Cabriolet?

Coming across a factory version of a model that doesn’t actually exist is always a lot of fun. At least it is for me as someone who will view this 993 from afar, analyze and read about it, and then write. Were I an actual interested buyer I’d either be very anxious – perhaps because I was already aware of this car’s existence and waiting for a sale – or befuddled as I try to track down all of the necessary verification to support the factory production of such a rarity. But either way there’s plenty to look at. The 993 Carrera S, also known as the C2S, was only produced as a Coupe. It’s a wonderful car; one of my favorite 911 designs Porsche has released. It seems, however, that at least one buyer convinced Porsche to make a Cabriolet and it is that car which we see here. The asking price is astronomical and the mileage is very low. All of which combines to make for a very special 911.

Absolutely rare example of a 993 „S“ Convertible with turbo body.

Original Porsche factory conversion to turbo body according to special customer request. This model has never been available through the official Porsche sales program.

This Porsche has been ordered new in late 1997 by a gentleman, who had been a Porsche enthusiast for quite a long time. Therefor at that time he already had purchased a significant number of vehicles from Porsche in Stuttgart. Obviously he was able to convince the engineers at the Porsche Exclusive Department to convert his brandnew 993 convertible to a 993 „S“ Cab with a turbo body. He received his personal sample in May 1998. The car was titled „ORIG. PORSCHE-WERKSUMBAU“ („ORIG. PORSCHE-FACTORY CONVERSION“ see photo of title).

Porsche always refused to do this kind of conversion (e.g. see story „Rare Air“ by Zachary Maine in Excellence Magazine, June 2011) although there were a lot of serious requests at that time. We do not know what made the Porsche engineers authorise this rare exception.

We were able to trace only one more 993 Cab which was converted by Porsche in Stuttgart to a turbo body: Jerry Seinfeld sent in 2000 a Porsche 993 Cab to Porsche Exclusive. In 2001 he received a vehicle which was converted by using not only the turbo body but also parts of the 964 Speedster. Another 993 which was turned by Porsche in Stuttgart into a Speedster was presented to F.A. Porsche for his 60th birthday. But this one is missing the wide body.

A number of conversions were carried out by independent Porsche shops but never at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart. Please do not mistake any unauthorized wide bodies with this orig. Porsche Factory Conversion.

The 993 S Convertible with naturally aspirated engine seems to be even rarer than the 993 Turbo Convertible, of which the production of 14 cars by Porsche is known.

This Porsche remained with its sole owner in Germany for 27 years and has always been registered. During all this time it has been supervised and maintained by the same Porsche workshop. All service records and a complete set of books come with the car. The owner was fully aware of the uniqueness of his 993 and therefor she collected very few miles. Driven just 16.200 documented kilometers (10.2k miles) since new, this is an absolute collector’s item. Since 2015 the vehicle is part of a private collection and has not been registered anymore.

This is thought to be the only extant 911 built to this specification by the factory. The ad mentions Jerry Seinfeld’s 993 Speedster, but that’s a slightly different car so I’m not sure it would count. Does that add up to a nearly $500K asking price? I really don’t know. That’s Turbo S money, and we’ve certainly seen exceedingly rare 993s sell for far more than even what is asked for here. But those high-dollar cars tend to be of the GT variety or the RS. I don’t know if the pedigree of the C2S, wonderful though it might be, is enough to carry it to these heights.

Of course, all of this assumes verification so there’s plenty of legwork to be put in. It’s a beautiful car though combining all the sensations of drop-top motoring with that shapely wider rear. I guess the big question for any prospective buyer interested in a rare 993 Cabriolet is whether you’d prefer this Carrera S or one of the 14 993 Turbo Cabriolets that have been produced. This one appears to be more rare, and ultimately with a car like this that exclusivity may decide the day, but I’d have to think hard about that choice. I mean, if you’re going to search out a model that doesn’t officially exist why not go the full distance and get the extra power too?

2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Club Coupe

Earlier this week I featured one of Porsche’s classic 911 special editions. This time we’ll turn to one of the modern versions. I’m not sure if we’ve ever featured this edition so it makes for a nice treat. This is a 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera S Club Coupe, located in Ontario, with just 3,044 miles on it. The condition looks superb and with only 50 such produced it is one of the rarer editions out there. The seller definitely is trying to capitalize on that rarity with an asking price that strikes me as insane, but given that I can’t ever recall seeing one come up for sale I suppose some premium is warranted. Add in the very low miles and surely we have a valuable 911. But this valuable?

This 2006 Porsche 911 Club Coupe is number 39 out of 50 made.

This car has been stored in a climate controlled glass box that was specifically made in the garage for the car, hidden from sunlight and any elements, stored under its cover and on tire cradles to prevent the original tires uneven tire wear from storage. While in storage, the car has a constant battery charge on the original battery. This car has never seen rain, let alone a cloudy day. This car has every service record and document since it was ordered in 2005. It is meticulously clean.

In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the Porsche Club of America, Porsche created an exclusive distinctive colour, unique interior styling and commemorative touches, and a more powerful and higher performing engine. Limited to an exclusive run of just 50 cars initially made available to PCA members.

The first production model of this vehicle was returned to the Porsche Museum in Germany and one lucky PCA member won the 15th model in a sweepstakes drawing. The remaining 48 models were offered to randomly chosen PCA members who applied to purchase this extremely rare car. The Porsche 911 Club Coupe, which was available only in the unique Azzuro California colour, comes equipped with a more powerful 381hp engine with the X51 Power Kit. Other features unique to this special model include a vehicle identification number (VIN) which ends with the production number and special commemorative badges and door sills which adorn the interior. Additional exclusive options were available to customers and this one has the Aero kit Other exclusive options include Storage Compartment Lid with Model Logo and the Porsche Crest in the Headrests.

The 911 Club Coupe’s most visual exterior feature is its distinguishing Azzuro California Blue colour. This paint colour is a modern interoperation of azure blue, a colour mode popular on Porsche 356 sports cars when the PCA was founded 50 years ago. The rear portion of the standard centre console and the rear of the drivers and passenger seats is also painted in Azurro California.

In addition to the sport series seats, the 911 Club Coupe’s standard interior features include black instrument dials and a sort steer in wheel and gear shifter. Stainless steel door sills incorporate the 911 Club Coupe logo, and each car bears a badge on the drivers side door trim indicating its individual number in the series of 50 cars. The interior also features the Sport Chrono Package Plus which enhances vehicle performance through a system that simultaneously alters elements of chassis, engine, and transmission. In addition to the ability to take performance to new heights, the Sport Chrono Package equips the vehicle with performance display, digital and analog stopwatches, and the Sport Plus button.

The Club Coupe was the first in the current generation of Porsche 911 Sports cars to be equipped with the X51 Powerkit. This feature increases the output of the 3.8L, flat six cylinder Carrera S engine from 355hp to 381hp and peak torque from 295 to 306 ft. lbs., making it, at the time, the most powerful non-turbocharged engine offered in a Porsche 911 production car in North America. Distinguished by its carbon finer air cleaner housing, the X51 Powerkit boots performance through a series of engine enhancements including a larger throttle body, optimized intake airflow, cylinder heads and exhaust manifold modifications, changes in the control unit, and the inclusion of a sport exhaust system. The result produces a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds, and a top track speed of 186mph.

The Clue Coupe was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Porsche Club of North America. Now, you might be thinking: didn’t Porsche just release a special edition Club Coupe in commemoration of the PCNA? They did! That was for the 60th anniversary. Look for the next one in 2026. The 50 year version came with a variety of cosmetic enhancements to set it apart from every other 911: the exterior came only in Azurro California – a lovely shade of light blue metallic that reminds me of Iris Blue from the ’80s – and the interior came in Stone Grey leather with sport seats and the center console painted to match the exterior. It’s a really nice color combination that appears to show well in a variety of lighting conditions. Unlike some of the earlier commemorative editions the Club also came with a bit more power in the guise of the X51 powerkit. Not too bad all around.

This particular Club Coupe has been pampered somewhat beyond reason and basically hermetically sealed in a glass box. Though it appears the owner has been gracious enough to allow it the freedom to romp around among some flowers every now and again. Very nice. Is it worth $230,000? I’d be very surprised. I suppose my interest lies in where it actually sells. I’m sure it’s one of the better examples out there given that it is more or less unused, but the buyer of this car will have to care for it under similar white glove conditions. Where’s the fun in that?
