While we’re still a year away from importing the first 1990 Audi S2s, in 1989 Audi released the new Coupe. The car the United States got started coming in late 1989, and while the world received several engine and drivetrain options, the U.S. only got the quattro variant with the 2.3 20V “7A” powerplant for two years before the Coupe was pulled from these shores. That hasn’t stopped plenty of people from making S2 replicas while we wait until 2015 to start importing real S2s. However, for something a little bit different, the first 1989 coupes are now importable. This particular variant is a front wheel drive replacement for the aging Coupe GT model, though it effectively picked up the same 2.3 10V “NG” drivetrain that the United States saw in the 1987.5 Coupe GT “Special Build” models. Not often thought of as an option, one of these handsome front drivers is for sale today on Ebay.de:

The American poet Robert Frost once wrote: “In three words I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life: it goes on.” Frankly, I can’t think of a better tagline for the Mercedes-Benz W123, either. It really does go on. And on. And on. We’re written a lot about these iconic Mercedes sedans, coupes and estates, but these cars have a timeless appeal backed up by frugal engines. This final year 300CD coupe has the 3.0 liter turbocharged inline-5 diesel under the hood. It might not be a terribly fast car, but it blends economy with a level of class you just can’t match in most modern cars. This particular car for sale in Arizona is a one-owner example with a low 64,500 miles on the clock.

5 CommentsBack in August, Paul wrote up a well sorted 1984 Audi Quattro with an impressive 400hp 20V Turbo swap. Though the car looks just about perfect and values of these have risen sharply over the past few years, this car remains available and popped back up on Kijiji.Ca for $30,000. While that may sound like a lot of money for a Quattro, with the collector status of these cars pretty firmly cemented and clean examples pushing into the high teens without the serious engine build and details of this car, it may just be a great deal for the right buyer! If we were going to build a great Quattro driver and show car, this is how we’d do it. You certainly would have a difficult time replicating this car’s condition for the asking price and it’ll pretty soundly thrash that $30,000 E30 M3 you’ve had your eye on…
