Motorsport Monday: 1971 Porsche 911 RSR Martini Racing Tribute – REVISIT

One of my favorite cars from last year wasn’t necessarily everyone else’s favorite; but that’s what makes this hobby interesting to me – that we don’t all like the same things. Truth be told, I prefer the more conventional RSR cars, but this 1971 911 RSR “Mary Stuart” Martini inspired car is pretty spectacular in its individuality. It’s floated around a few sites and is now up on Ebay with a “Buy It Now” price $30,000 less than last fall when I originally wrote it up. To be honest, it’s still priced high in my mind, but if you like the look and want a turn-key race car that will be sure to be fast and test your skills, this RSR tribute is a good option:

I think I’ve made it pretty clear that I think Martini Racing colors are just awesome. Some people insist everything looks better in “Gulf Blue”, but for me, it’s those Martini stripes that made some of the best looking race cars (and in a very few cases, even improved road cars). Case in point is today’s example; perhaps one of the strangest downforce attempts of the 1970s on a Porsche – the Mary Stuart tailed Martini Racing RSR. While a neat design in some ways, it certainly looks odd from other angles. Today’s 1971 911 is a recreation of the original, but you can’t deny that it looks fantastic in the proper Martini Racing colors of the 1973 RSR:

1986 Porsche 944 Rothmans Cup

If you don’t know about the Rothmans Cup 944s, you’d be not the only one. As one of the lesser known single-make race series from the 1980s, the Canada-only Rothmans Cup series didn’t have the flashiest, fastest cars on the planet. It wasn’t even as crazy as the later Turbo cup, where the cars had magnesium and unobtanium bits. No, what the Rothmans Cup was all about was the bare-bones racing. Some of the best drivers in the world signed up, proving the idea was a good one – and the sealed motors ensured a level playing field. It was all about the driving! To help a bit though, the Rothmans cars were stripped to the bones; no A/C, no power steering, no sunroof – and they were beefed up with the M474 Koni suspension and M220 limited slip differential. This isn’t the first time I’ve written up a 944 Rothmans car, as last year we saw a Rothmans Cup in need of a restoration that had trouble trading hands. In much better overall shape and ready to race, this car looks splendid in its original colors:

1995 Audi S6

By 1995, it really seemed that the large fast executive sedan was leaving the U.S. for good. The E34 BMW was replaced in 1997 with the E39, but there was no word of an M5. Indeed, the 540i was considered so close in performance to the outgoing M5 it seemed BMW wasn’t planning one. The era of hand-constructed M-cars was over. The 500E had also left us in 1994, with the W124 chassis also on its way out. That legendary car and chassis still haunts the dreams of many enthusiasts both in and out of the marque. For Audi, it was also the end of an era with the demise of the turbocharged inline-5, an engine that had defined the company’s success in motorsport as well as the unique individuality of the brand. That motor last appeared in the United States in the 1995 Audi S6, like the other super sedans a high water mark for the brands whose memory would not be easy to shake. Now over two decades after its introduction in the 1991 200 and 1992 S4, the 3B/AAN motor is still a growing legend amongst Audi fans. Many of these super sedans were used hard and well over their life, providing countless memories of effortless overtaking and miraculous drives through snowy conditions. For those who haven’t yet experienced the great C4 chassis mated to the phenomenal motor that the WRC helped to create, time hasn’t run out. There are still good examples of the C4 chassis floating around, and unlike good examples of the E34 M5 and W124 500E, they’re quite affordable. Take this black over grey S6 for example:

S-Fest – A Collection of Ur-S cars in Varying States of Awesomeness

The Audi S6. Long considered the weakest of the super-sedans of the early to mid 1990s, the quattro has since created a legend of its own for the way it can shrug off miles that would bury other cars, the way it can handle supercar levels of power from a seemingly too-small displacement turbo motor, and the subdued fury with which it rolls down the road. Like the M5 and 500E, the S6 and it’s older brother S4 have presence that few other cars can achieve. Long one of our favorites at GCFSB, the S6 is also one of the best values currently in classic German motoring with most available for well under $10,000. Today, thanks to our reader John, we have a roundup of S6s in various states of tune and condition as well as color – which would be your choice?

Tuner Tuesday: 1986 Porsche 930/DP 935 – REVISIT

Darth Vader, your car has arrived. One of my favorite cars that I wrote up for “Tuner Tuesday” was the crazy all-black DP935 back in August. The car has moved sellers and is now available on Ebay. A reserve auction this time around, the opening bid price has climbed with reserve still on from the original $109,500 to $124,900. While there are much better photos of the car this time around, nothing else appears to have changed making those some pretty pricey pictures. Still, this is a fun car to look at, so enjoy the darkness!
