A few years ago, I had the opportunity to attend one of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America’s June Jamboree shows at the Mercedes-Benz Headquarters in Montvale, New Jersey. The car I was driving at the time, a 1998 C230, won a popular choice award, mainly down to condition and originality. Across the parking lot, a car caught my eye that is still haunting me to this day. It was a 1967 250S sedan finished in Arabian Grey with a red MBTex interior. It also had a 4-speed manual gearbox, with floor shift. With the simple dog dish hubcaps over steel wheels, there was something refreshingly honest about this car. This 300SEL 3.5 for sale in Portugal reminds me a lot of that particular Mercedes from years past, albeit this one has the 3.5 liter V8 residing under the bonnet, with leather seating in place of the MBTex.

It’s rare that you see a Mercedes-Benz 300E with the 5-speed manual gearbox (a short-lived option in the US market). We saw this W124 back in July and it’s up for sale again, with a few hundred more miles on the clock. If a 500E is a little to rich for your blood but you prefer to row your own gears, this E-class could sate your appetite.

2 CommentsThe 1993 Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 Limited Edition we featured last year is back up for sale, this time surfacing in California. Wearing Euro market headlamps, this final year W201 has accumulated just under 5,500 miles in that time and comes at a considerable discount since when we last saw it. Rarely do you get a chance to acquire such a rare piece of Mercedes-Benz history for such little cash. Given the choice between the new CLA and this stately compact sedan, I’d reach for the keys to the original baby Benz every time.

1 CommentThere are few offerings from Mercedes-Benz in the past decade or so, that interest me as much as the E63 AMG Estate. The SLS, C63 AMG, and because I have a soft spot for ridiculous things, the G55 AMG, are the only vehicles to wear the three pointed star that I’d actually want to own. The S550 is a modern marvel, but at the end of the day, I’m an A8 W12 guy. I’ll pass on the S-Class.
Mercedes’ powerful long roof is another story though. Where as Audi abandoned selling any sort of fast wagon back in 2008, Mercedes has hung in there, never leaving us without the option of a grocery getter that will leave sports cars in its dust. While I do prefer the look of the current E-Class, there’s something special about the slatted grille on this 2012. It adds an extra bit of prestige to the car, which further adds to its sleepiness, and covert craziness is what this car is all about. As far as performance daily drivers go, there isn’t anything that comes close to the E63 Estate. It doesn’t have any direct competition in the United States, not in its class anyway. Super SUVs like the Grand Cherokee SRT8, or cars like the S7, and Porsche Panamera GTS, are the kind of vehicles one might cross shop when looking at one of these, but none of them are as dynamic as the E63. One minute you’re dropping the kids off at private school, the next you’re getting a latte, and maybe after that you head to the drag strip to rattle off 12.2 quarter miles times. Blame all that caffeine for making you want to run the car at full tilt, but you know deep down that you just want to play with your toy, and who wouldn’t?!

3 CommentsThe Mercedes-Benz W124 E-class came in many shapes and styles, from the stately four-seat cabriolet to the muscular Porsche built 500E/E500. After we featured the low mileage 1986 300E last week, I was surprised to see yet another mint example of an early W124 crop up, this time in Florida in the classic combination of Brilliant Silver over blue leather. This car might be 30 years old, but it’s certainly a classic that could be used daily and in the process, provide motoring pleasure hard to match from many modern day machines.
