I’ve Got The Itch: 1996 Porsche 993 Cabriolet For Sale

I have had this thing going on in the back of my head, my wife calls it “the voices.”  Well they have been strong and they want another Porsche.  I am guessing it is a 993, preferably a soft top, you know because Oregonians get so much sun.  Something a little like this…

Neat car, I love the interior but this is coming from someone that owned a SLK with a similar color treatment.  It looks to be in wonderful condition and will treat the new owner very well.

The question I have is, why did the motor go at 76k miles?  I know it is a Porsche and there really is no rhyme or reason to these sorts of things.  But the fallacy is that the air cooled motors are more reliable than those new fangled water cooled engines.

Guess not!

All things being equal I would rather have a rebuilt motor than one in questionable shape I suppose.  At $37k it is no bargain but it is one of the last of the air cooled 911’s with a rebuilt motor, in a rare color combination, in very nice shape.

This does nothing to calm the voices.

Very expensive 1979 Porsche 930 Resto Mod

This 930 has been thoroughly stripped down and beefed up from a bare shell into a pretty wicked sounding beast.

The 930 Turbo was no slouch back when it was new. With 300 boosted horses from the 3.0 liter in 1979 it provided a forced air induction breath of fresh air amongst the many other low power offerings of the era.

This 911 has a rebuilt engine with a near race exhaust. I wish the seller went into more details about what the rebuild entailed as the ask price is so high I would expect some new high end internals.

The car has monster rims, 18″x12″ out back and a fiberglass widebody kit to contain them.

Inside a new roll bar is in place, which should help stiffen the chassis and maybe make the car eligible for some track events.

The seller says there are $130,000 in receipts and milage is listed as 115 since the rebuild. I’d be curious how much is really on the car and the transmission. The ask price is a fairly insane $95,000, you could get two nice stock 930 Turbos for that price.

10k Mile 1988 Porsche 928 For Sale

I have never owned a 928 but I have driven a few.  These are fantastic touring cars, outside a BMW 850 I can’t think of a better vehicle on the open highway.  But these were terribly expensive cars in their day and even more expensive to maintain.

This led to many sharks winding up with owners who were not ready for the full 928 experience.

“I am helping my father sell his 1988 928 S4. Only 10,478 original miles since new. The paint is perfect – no dents, dings, or scratches. The interior is near perfect except for some slight carpet fading. No cracks, fading, or damage to the vinyl and leather surfaces. Wheels do not have curb rash and the engine compartment is near spotless. Carfax certified. Automatic, no damage history.

While the car is in phenomenal condition, my father is extremely picky about his cars, so he had the following work done to bring it up to his standards:

New timing belt,

He also purchased an extended warranty for the car that has 32 month Gold coverage service contract with complete coverage from Auto Source. That item alone cost $3100 and is transferable to the new owner. Yes, the remaining time on the warranty is 32 months.

Normally I would advise you to run, not walk from this car. A typical 10k 928 would have rotten tires, worn seals, porous gaskets, and lord knows what else. This shark has had a recent service and comes with the balance of a 32 month warranty. That is just unheard of!

On the other hand, what do you do with this? We talk about this all the time, it’s not like you can just start commuting in this car. Every mile driven only detracts from the cache and value of having such a low mile car. This is a garage queen and it always will be. Sure you will score well in your local PCA event but if you are looking for something fun to drive down the coast you best look elsewhere.

I won’t even get in to the slush box transmission. More sharks have automatic trannies than a manual, they are a grand touring car and I am OK with that. If you absolutely have to have a manual you can wait for the next 10k mile example to surface.

See what I did there?

$34.5k is quite a bit for this car, $30k is more reasonable. At that sum you could park it and drive it at your will, which would be not much but that is OK as you would have this beautiful 928 to fuss over for years to come.

1994 Porsche 911 Speedster

Last year, as Porsche began to wrap up production of the 997 series 911, the first Speedster model emerged from the factory in 17 years. This was only the third generation of 911 to have a Speedster model, and this 1994 model was the 2011 model’s direct predecessor. With 930 produced, this was the second rarest 964, save for the Jubilee Edition, which was not sold in the US. It was a bit of a mash up between a 911 cabriolet and 964 RS, but had a less aggressive suspension setup than the RS and less creature comforts than the cabriolet, as the Speedster name was meant to conjure up an image of a drivers car. The following example for sale in New Jersey has under 30,000 miles, but low mileage is not exactly uncommon with these cars, as many collectors snapped them up when new.

Personally, I think around $70,000 to $75,000 is about right, as there is nothing too out of the ordinary that sets this particular Speedster apart from the crowd.

1993 Porsche 968 Club Sport For Sale

Too bad you can’t drive it, I am sure glad the seller got that out of the way early in the advertisement.  In translation this means, “I have always wanted one of these cars so I purchased one thinking I could get it federalized myself.”  Fast forward a few years and the seller found that is easier said than done.

I won’t re-hash the wiki dump the seller placed in their ad but I will say this is a very special car, something you almost never see in the states.

I imported the car with full EPA and DOT exemptions and you should note that the car IS NOT ELIGIBLE to be licensed and driven on US roads. I do have the vehicle insured under my State Farm Collector car policy and in theory, one could drive the car with a dealer tag. I have put less than 500 miles on the car since importing it in 2011. It drive great and is very quick and incredibly well balanced.

There are only a hand full of these in the US and the values of these cars is increasing (particularly for the rare examples with great options). This car is in excellent original condition and shows NO signs of accidents and absolutely NO sign of any rust.”

If I had a top 5 list of cars I would import if time and money didn’t matter list this car would be on it.  Which is saying something because there are all sorts of cars I or any enthusiast would consider.

A quick scan of the car and it seems to be in fine shape.  The gaps in the hood are a bit off which could mean it needs adjusting or it was repaired poorly.  Prospective buyers would want to have that checked out prior to bidding.  The equipment is spot on with what I would order if given a chance.  There is a great deal to like here.

So the question then becomes what is a car you could not license or drive worth?  Being a dealer I could actually make this work which is all kinds of torture but that is not the case for everyone.  Doing a quick scan of used CS’s in Europe they would translate to $35-40k here.  But they can drive them anytime and anywhere they please.

I think this CS is rare enough to get whatever the seller is looking for.  Sadly the closest I will get is staring at the poster I have of this exact car in my garage.

Well Done 1964 Porsche 904 GTS Replica For Sale

I know, it’s a replica.  But if this were the real thing there would be several more zeros attached.  A quick primer on the 904, the street-legal version debuted in 1964 in order to meet Group III regulations that require a set number of road cars be produced to qualify for competition.  The 904 is the precursor to the 917.

Most of these now sit in museums or race in vintage events.  These cars have also become quite popular on the replica market, some have fared better than others.  What we have here is #2 in a series of 25 replica cars, I am unsure of the manufacturer but I am guessing this is a Beck product.  The detail work is amazing and it is  the most accurate tribute I have seen.

Bidding has been furious on this car, currently it sits at $65.1k with quite a bit of time left.  The interest is understandable with only 105 miles on the ODO.  This is essentially a new car, comparable examples have traded anywhere between $90-130k so even the buy it now of $105k does not seem out of line.

7k Mile 2002 Porsche 996 Turbo With Gads of Upgrades

People with money do silly things.  Things like buying a $130k Porsche 996 turbo, spend even more money upgrading it and then they let it sit.  Only puling out of the garage to wash, wax, and tuck it back into the garage.  I am not sure today’s cars are going to have the collectivity of the autos of yore.  It would be tragic to assume they will only to find that the same sense of sentimentality may not exist in 30 years.  Think of all that time behind the wheel that was lost for the fear of getting a ding, scratch, or heaven forbid racking up some miles on your “precious.”

On the flip side it sure is nice when one of these hits the market.

The 996 cars are my least favorite of the 911 series.  With that I think the Turbo cars are terribly undervalued.  If you are not into attention seeking maneuvers this may not work for you.  Speed Yellow is a very striking hue and with the wheels, wing, and other styling bits the look verges on being over the top.

But the car itself looks to be as new and the $75k buy it now gets you a great deal of performance for the fraction of a comparable new one.  Bidding currently sits at $42k, the reserve has yet to be met

1990 Porsche 944 S2 Time Capsule For Sale

I used to have a thing for shoes when I was younger.  I was obsessed by them, I would cut Nike ads out of magazines and tape them to my Trapper Keeper.

Yeah I am old.

Thinking about this sort of explains my fondness for the Porsche 944 cars.  As I grew up my thing for shoes turned into a fixation for cars.  Is it any small wonder the 944 looks so much like a shoe.  Look at a picture of the Nike Legend and look at a 944.  Creepy huh?

I dunno, maybe that is just me.

Beautiful car, I have made my fondness for the S2 cars well known.  90% of the turbo performance with 50% less headaches.  I know that is fuzzy math but that is my perception.

This is as fine an example that you will ever find.  Is it $20k fine?  I am not sure, $20k is a great deal of money for any S2, even one as fine as this.  But, if you are looking for the absolute best then this is the car for you.

1999 Porsche 911

The year 1999 was perhaps one of the most significant years for Porsche in recent memory, as it signaled the beginning of a new era for the venerable 911. Gone were the direct links to the past, such as air-cooled engines, round headlamps and fixed quarter light glass. The type 996 was indeed an all new design, by famed stylist Harm Lagaay and while it didn’t share any components with its predecessor, it did share much of its front end with the less expensive, mid-eingined Boxster. While some 911 purists derided the new model, it did bring about evolutionary touches to increase usability, while retaining the trademark rear-engined layout. Over a decade later, prices for 996s have lagged behind other, more desirable 911s, but it allows less wealthy enthusiasts access to the brand. This particular 911 is owned by our reader Joe and is very well sorted despite having just passed the 100,000 mile mark.

I searched far and wide for this car. I wanted an LSD-equipped, no accident, all-original paint 996 coupe. It had 60,000 miles when I purchased it 2 years ago. I used it as my daily driver and racked up 40,000 miles in short order. My job requires me to drive all over California. It only let me down once when the crank position sensor started to go. Other than that it has been a fantastic car to own and drive. It is plenty fast, comfortable around town and perfect for long drives. I have never raced the car or used it at track days. I drive the car quickly at times but I never abuse it (no revving past 4,000 until fully warmed, rev-matching on downshifts, etc.). It is so easy to drive and comfortable that it is easy to foget just how fast this car is. It is a shockingly quick car on a twisty road, which I would be happy to demonstrate for any potential buyer. The car continues to be accident-free and is now parked until it sells. I decided to sell because my work continues to increase the amount of driving I do and because I will soon have another sports car.

Maintenance

I have spared no expense maintaining the car. I performed the routine items myself (oil changes, brakes, shocks, etc.) and relied on two reputable shops to tackle the bigger stuff – The Rennshop in San Jose and Werks II in Burbank. Anything they recommended I have fixed or replaced, I did without exception.

Recent work includes a brake fluid flush, transmission fluid flush, new Porsche floor mats, a new Interstate battery and new Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires f&r 7,000 miles ago. Included are the original books, 2 working master keys with built-in remote, 1 valet key, 3 extra oil filters with crush rings, the original un-used tool kit, the original (working) stereo, original headlight bulbs, wheel lock key, and all the service records for the car.

Car was just inspected at 99,000 miles by Werks II in Burbank and was given a clean bill of health. Everything on the car works, no exceptions. Car needs nothing mechanically. Paint has a few rock chips and door dings. Interior has some minor scuffing on the driver seat and the usual scratched paint on the front trunk release lever. Overall though the car looks very good for being 13 years old.

Upgrades

When the rear main seal started to weep oil, I had it upgraded with the latest 997 style replacement, upgraded to a sport clutch and lightweight flywheel, and had the LN Engineering IMS bearing kit installed. When the front lower control arm bushings started to go last year, I upgraded to the GT3 adjustable LCA’s and added a tiny bit more negative camber in the front. I upgraded to the ROW Sport suspension, replaced the replica Carrera 5-spoke wheels with genuine Porsche/BBS Carrera 5-spoke wheels, installed a Porsche short shift kit, and a Kenwood head unit. This includes a Garmin navigation system with touchscreen, a DVD movie player, MP3 audio, Sirius/XM satellite radio, and iPod plug. (Note: No wires were cut as part of the install. I used an aftermarket adapter which simply plugs into the original harness.) I had the windows tinted with the lightest 3M tint available both to keep the interior cooler as well as to protect the interior from UV. A previous owner had installed a set of HID bulbs, which are quite effective.

Options

I don’t know the exact amount but this was an $80,000+ car when new and included a few interesting options, like the LSD, aluminum gauge faces and chrome door sills with ‘Carrera’ script. Here is a break-down of the option codes and their original cost:

When comparing this car to others of similar age and mileage, please keep in mind the cost to bring them up to the same level of mechanical condition (IMS bearing upgrade, lightweight flywheel and clutch, etc.) and to have the same types of modifications (LSD, wheels, shortshifter, stereo/nav system, etc.). You’ll see that this car is a relative bargain.

This 911 has had a great amount of care lavished on it. Looking at pictures, things like scratch-free door handles and crystal clear headlamps are the mark of a careful owner who appreciates fine machinery. I have to admit, the 996 was never my favorite 911, but being the 911 fan that I am, a vehicle such as this is making me rethink my stance on this particular generation of 911 in the chances that I may move out of my Cooper S in the near future.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E

The 500E is one of the most complete cars I’ve ever driven. When I was in college, I was fortunate enough to test drive this legend at a specialist dealer. Even though the car I drove had 110,000 miles on the clock, in true Mercedes-Benz fashion, it felt solid as a rock. The suspension in this car alone was a revelation; comfortable enough for highway cruising yet tight enough when you wanted to be aggressive. To explain how the engineers pulled this off would probably be as hard to explain how gravity works. This car left an impression on me and every time I see one come up for sale, the little devil on my shoulder tells me to forget about the maintenance, fuel and insurance costs….just do it. This 1993 500E is for sale right in my backyard and it’s calling my name.

1993 Mercedes 500E: A joint production between Mercedes and Porsche. Here is the chance to own one of the cleanest and most cared for 500Es.

A little history, the prior owner received the car as part of a settlement many years ago and she spared absolutely no expense caring for it, none! The car was stored in a garage on 5th Avenue nearly all its life, it was always serviced at MB of Manhattan or EuroMotorcars in Bethesda on occasion. I have paperwork on the car that includes all the maintenance performed since its original purchase in addition to the owner’s manual svc stamps since ’93. I have all the major services documented since original purchase, including the latest 60k maintenance performed at the dealership to the tune of $1,100+ when the car had 57k; transmission flush was performed at 52k. Documented engine harness and water pump replacement.

All major equipment/parts on the car are 100% original i.e., engine, transmission, and body… Engine runs super smooth and transmission shifts like butter. Everything functions inside/out, cassette deck has the occasional hiccup but radio and cd player work perfectly. A/C blows ice cold and heat works great. It has never been driven in rain or snow, no rust/corrosion anywhere and the car lived a sheltered life as stated. No accidents/bodywork and paintwork is all original. Interior shows no signs of wear w/ a few minor blemishes on wood that is merely unavoidable on these cars. I have all three original keys, owners manual, documents, and MB dust cover. When I took possession the dealership recommended as general maintenance to update some parts, so I did right away. Below I will list what has been updated:
