1987 Porsche 911 Carrera

For a buyer thinking about his first Porsche we still come back to the 3.2 Carrera and 911SC as the ideal models from which to choose. Both still represent good value since driver-quality examples in very good condition can still be found without too much trouble and each gives an interested buyer a chance to experience the mystique of the air-cooled Porsches that are so prized by enthusiasts and collectors alike. Among the standard cars, the most desirable tend to come from the final three years of 3.2 Carrera production as it is those cars that came with the upgraded G50 5-speed manual transmission. The car we have featured here is just such a car: a 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera, located in Michigan, with just under 84K miles that is on auction with no reserve.

1989 Porsche 944S2

Although the appeal of the budget speed of the 944 Turbo is certainly large, the actual driving experience around town can sometime be a bit lacking and the expense of 25 year old turbocharged technology can be a turnoff. Luckily, Porsche offered its own solution with the 944S2. Well covered on these pages, the S2 offers early Turbo levels of performance from its 3.0 16V motor, with no turbo lag. I’ve said it was perhaps the best all-arounder Porsche has ever built, and I think overall that’s a realistic look at the S2; if all-out speed wasn’t your goal, the S2 offers practicality, lower ownership costs and enough power to take advantage of one of the best handling chassis ever made. 1976 Porsche 914

Porsche fans can be, at times, a curious lot. No matter what new model the company unveils, those into the marque will always judge it against the almighty 911. The Cayenne SUV has been their sales savior, the Panamera sedan has been deemed ugly and the Boxster is for those who can’t afford a real Porsche. We’ve heard all the stereotypes. Back in the 1970s, Porsche devised an entry level car with the help of Volkswagen in the form of the mid-engined 914. Powered by a flat-4, these were badged both as VWs and Porsches, and later on exclusively as Porsches. This 914 in astoundingly original condition is for sale in Florida and a perfect runabout for soaking up that state’s rays.

1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet – M491

Last week we featured this M491-optioned Carrera Coupe. It sold for its Buy It Now price of $47,000, which at the time of writing I felt was high within the current market. I was wrong. It comes as little surprise then that almost immediately after that auction ended another M491-optioned Carrera appeared on the market, though this time a Cabriolet. Coincidence? Possibly, but we see this sort of thing happen often enough that I assume the second seller is capitalizing on the market, and I wouldn’t blame him. Here we have a M491-optioned 1986 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet, located in Connecticut, with 50,805 miles on the clock.

20K Friday – Super Sedan Edition: E28 M5 v. W124 500E – Which Would You Choose?

What’s going on here? Tax returns are still heading out and we’re feeling rich? Well, not so much but it is nice to dream. While normally on Friday we look for the best deals, this duo was too good to pass up. You could argue about who started the super-sedan trend, but there’s no doubt that the Germans perfected it. Two of the most memorable of these are the E28 M5 and W124 500E; blunt instruments that achieve their goals of luxurious speed in very different ways. We’ve covered many M5s recently of different generations, but as I mentioned in the M5 Roundup, while it’s tempting to buy the cheapest M5 you can get your hands on that’s often a poor decision; in many ways, the same could be said about the 500E. So, here are two quite nice examples to choose from – which would be your dream? Let’s start with the M5:
