10K Friday: The ones everyone wanted! S8 v. 740i Sport v. 560 SEL

509

Two weeks ago I wrote up executive showdown which featured an A8L against a 745i and S500. The general consensus was that while most wanted the Audi, the Mercedes-Benz (though maybe not that particular one) was the better long-term purchase. Personally, I think Audis of this generation sometimes get an unwarranted reputation, but regardless few people really wanted any of these cars as almost all found some earlier generation more appealing. So, run the tape again, this time with the “Greatest Hits”! Let’s start with the Audi:

I can’t deny that I have a serious love affair with the S8. It just looks sooooooo right. This particular example looks splendid in the quite rare Irish Green Pearl and has the preferred look 18″ Avus wheels in good condition from the look of the photos. Interior also looks great, and mileage is low to average for the market. Timing belt service should have been performed so look for that to have been done, and also it appears there is front bumper damage (not uncommon on the low-slung S8), but at below $10,000, this car looks like the best bang for the buck in this group. Older Audis not your thing? How about a classicly styled BMW E38 740i Sport:

VERY NICE 740I M SERIES

509

Not much info, but this car looks splendid in classic black with equally classic M-Parallels. I love the look of these cars, they’re well proportioned and hide their weight cleverly. With around the same mileage of the Audi, this car is a little less complicated overall but consequently also offers less performance. But maybe performance isn’t your thing, and you’d like something a little more “classic” than the BMW? How about the dictator car of choice, a W126 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL?

This is a very clean 1990 Mercedes Benz 560 SEL sedan with 66890 miles. This Mercedes has been very well treated and maintained. This is a fully original Mercedes including the Becker stereo system. This 560 has front and rear seat heaters, and reclining rear seats, which are working properly.

We performed a road test as well as a safety and maintenance service on this vehicle in preparation for sale. The engine runs well and the automatic transmission shifts very nicely. All of the brake pads are in great shape as well. The oil and filters were just changed. I checked the equipment in this car for proper operation. I can verify that all of the following power equipment is working properly: All power windows, power door-locks, power seats, power sunroof, power mirror and antenna. The air conditioning and heat are working. All of the gauges and instrumentation are functioning properly. There aren’t any service or warning lights on.

The pearl grey paint is glossy and brilliant over the entire body. The exterior of this Mercedes is in very nice condition with only minor imperfections. There are some bumpers rub marks, a few bumps and some small scratches, but this car still looks really great. All of the trim is intact and in excellent condition, and the alloy wheels are clean, look great.

The interior has been very well maintained and is in terrific condition. All of the leather surfaces are soft and supple with very little wear, even on the driver side. The carpeting is clean and fluffy throughout this car. There aren’t any rips, holes or damage on the seats or carpeting in this Mercedes. The dash and door panels are in excellent condition without any cracks, fading or other damage. This was a non-smoker owned vehicle and there aren’t any smoke odors or burn marks inside this car.

The title is clear without any liens or encumbrances and is mileage are original. This is a beautiful 560 SEL in excellent condition. I would feel comfortable getting in and driving this Mercedes anywhere.

This Car has pass california smog inspection with no problem.

This 560 looks to be in great shape, and while it’s probably the least exciting of the three there is something that is evergreen about the Mercedes-Benz models from this time period. They still exude luxury and opulence even though many of the features are found on base model Kias now. Truth be told, these cars all are bathed in luxury, and although I’m partial to the Audi, I think all three of these cars are winners and offer their own version of classic German motoring with a healthy dose of luxury on a shoe-string budget.

Which would you prefer?

V8 Week: 2003 Audi S8

The Audi S8; a legend in its own time. Few cars are as memorable as the movies they star in, especially when it’s a good movie with super stars. Yet talk to any enthusiast, and the words “Ronin” are usually followed by “Oh, that S8!!!.” Hard to blame them, for as great as the driving was in general in that movie, the scenes featuring the S8 chase leading to its early demise are some of the most memorable in car chase history. Despite its star power, the Audi S8 has maintained a fairly low profile in the large fast sedan category, and it’s now possible to get one of these truly special cars for not much of your hard earned money. Though their image softened between the Ronin car with its chunky Avus alloys to the end of production, arguably the best models that came to the U.S. were the last year, such as this Ming Blue 2003:

Year: 2003
Model: S8
Engine: 4.2 liter V8
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Mileage: 90,100 mi
Price: Reserve Auction, $11,000 opening bid

This is one of the cleanest examples of an Audi S8 Quattro in the country. You will not find one in better condition or cleaner. I promise you that. This is fully loaded with the navigation. All LCD screens on the dash, radio etc are in pristine condition. No dead pixels. Wheels are in pristine condition also. Tires and brakes done all the way around at 85,000 miles! No nicks or scratches no curb rash. Parking sensors front and back work perfect. Every power option works perfect. This car is literally brand new! Interior is beautiful. Doesn’t look like any passengers ever sat in this car. The chrome is perfect, the lights are perfect, the sound system is clear and loud and the navigation works. It also includes all original floor mats that came along with the dvd binder with all the navigation dvd for the country. Original books and folder with the Audi pen it came with from the dealer. This car is literally brand new. I can’t stress that enough. It drives like it did day 1. Only one original owner who just purchased a new S8. It has been garaged it’s whole life! Dealer maintained! You will not find another one of these cars in this condition again unless you visit the Audi museum. Very rare color combination. Last year of this car and it has every option! Ask me questions I encourage it! I can talk about this car all day long!

On Sep-12-13 at 15:11:58 PDT, seller added the following information:

MAINTENANCE MAINTENANCE MAINTENANCE!
EVERYONE LOVES RECORDS!!!!!!!!!!

INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL BOOKS IS THE MAINTENANCE LOG! THIS AUDI GOT ALL IT’S CHECKUPS AND ITS REPAIRS ACCORDING TO THE MAINTENANCE LOG FROM THE FACTORY! HAS TONS OF STAMPS FROM VARIOUS AUDI DEALERS AROUND THE AREA THIS CAR LIVED IN IT’S WHOLE LIFE! DID IT ALL ON TIME JUST LIKE THE LOG SAYS! THIS AUDI WAS GARAGE KEPT ALSO! WE DID THE 90K CHECKUP! READY FOR YOU TO PURCHASE AND DRIVE IT ACROSS THE COUNTRY OR KEEP IT IN YOUR CAR COLLECTION. PURCHASE AN E34 BLACK M5 AND YOU HAVE BOTH RONIN CARS!!!!

Indeed, “everyone loves records”,especially when it comes to these cars. Like the A6 I wrote up last week, finding these cars in pristine condition with records is fairly hard, but this appears to be one of the better examples. Not long ago the 2003s were still commanding close to $20,000, but even with light use it seems it’s hard for them to push past $15,000 these days. Like the E34 M5, the Audi S8 is a solid performer that is well built and will make you look like you’re working for a hedge fund even if Ronald McDonald signs your paycheck. Though some Audis of this generation are maintenance hogs, reports from the actual community that own these cars are that they’re solid 200,000 plus mile cars that are really a joy to drive. I’m not a fan of the RS4-inspired “Celebration” wheels that were 2003 specific, but they’re easy enough to swap out for the early 18″ Avus wheels or something more exotic if you desire. The question is, how much longer can this car remain a secret and how many more of these pristine examples will be see come up for sale?

2001 Audi S8

“We need something very fast – Audi S8”. The line from Ronin still gives me chills, and the driving footage of the big car power sliding through the cobblestone streets completely sold me. I decided shortly thereafter that I needed one of these S8s to help me navigate all of the sticky situations in my life, too. Of course, that car was the first run of the S8, not available for sale in the U.S. until 2001. When it did come here, the face lifted S8 surprisingly arrived with more power than the early European version in a strange turn of historical trends; but it also arrived without the 6 speed manual as an option. This dampened sales of the D2 S8 to enthusiasts and they remain a fairly rare sight on the roads today. Even more rare among with the 2001 S8s are the Racing Green Pearl Effect copies, like this Ronin-ready 2001 on eBay today:

Like all Audis of this vintage, fears of repairs past 100,000 miles have pushed the values down quite a bit. That’s partly justified, as the A8s have a reputation for going through transmissions right around this mileage. The S8 doesn’t seem as prone to this transmission failure with the recalibrated ZF, but a rebuild or replacement should probably be on your radar if you are seriously looking. Otherwise, the motors are pretty reliable through 200,000 miles as long as properly serviced and there isn’t much worry about rusting with all of that aluminum there. This particular model has some of the few options that were available on the S8, like the solar roof and Alcantara package, but is missing the original Avus alloys, and the two missing side grills up front probably point towards an encounter with a curb at some point. The OZ wheels are high quality but look out of place in my opinion.

Still, at $8,500, this is just about bottom of the market for an S8, so there is some room for repairs in the budget. Seeing the car in green immediately makes me think of the Ronin car and renews my love affair with this model in general. It’s a low, sleek, fantastically imposing shape, and if you talk to those that own them, they absolutely love them. I’d personally hold out for one of the very rare 2003s (especially in the Avus Silver Pearl Effect), but surely for less than $10,000 someone wants to pretend they’re driving around Robert De Niro and Jean Reno for bit.

2001 Audi S8

The S8 has been Audi’s flagship for nearly a decade and a half, offering top notch luxury combined with 335 bhp and performance upgrades. The S8 is the gentleman’s sports car. This low mileage fixer upper for sale in Edison, New Jersey is a good opportunity to get in to a clean S8, and satisfy your need to tinker (if you have one).

2001 Audi S8 on Cars.com

Check out this 2001 Audi S8 with only 50,712 miles! Please be advised that this car does have the check engine light on and have several codes stored including O2 sensor, ABS unit, etc. The customer stated that the cowling backed up with water and leaked in the car (yes, this was a pretty common issue with this model if not cleaned properly). This car is being sold as a fixer upper needing repairs and show be towed off the premises. Because of the age, this car is being sold as-is no warranty expressed or implied. This is the perfect car for a technician to purchase and fix up and drive for years to come. Again, the body and interior are very clean. Check out the pictures! These S8s are getting very hard to find and even more so with very low miles like this one!

As an Audi owner I can say that the repairs being advertised in this ad are easily managable by the average garage mechanic.  Audis of this generation were still relatively easy to repair and parts will be readily available, either second hand, or in the aftermarket. The issue with the cowl, for example, is common on all Audi models and is remedied with a shop vac, a hammer, and a 12″ rachet extension.

In going to look at this car I would recommend bringing a VAG com to scan the codes to see exactly what they are and do your homework. With only 50K miles and at a price of $12,661, there is still a bit of haggling to do. If the repairs on this car are extensive, the price of $9K is more realistic. Depending on what the car needs, with a bit of money and good old fashoined elbow grease will get you in to an amazingly clean luxury sedan.

2007 Audi S8

If you ask any average car guy what his ideal sports sedan would be, you’ll likely get an overwhelming response of M5, maybe a few true BMW guys that will say Alpina B7, and of course there would be the remaining AMG guys, but few would even respond with S8.

The S8 is the forgotten soul in the sports sedan scene, but why is that, the rarity?  the subtlety?

Whatever the reason this is one of the most overlooked sports sedans, and these days one of the best bargains out there (thank you depreciation).  With an original MSRP of over $90K, these cars are a bargain for both a sports car, and a luxury sedan.  With 450HP, the 2 ton S8 would do 60mph in 4.9 seconds, so it was no slouch, however in a market where the E60 M5 boasts 500HP, and a run to 60 in 4.5 seconds, the S8 was just plain out gunned…on paper at least.

What most overlooked in the S8, was the fact that this was a solidly reliable, every day car.  Sure you could daily drive an M5, but being from the Northeast, I know what 500hp, and RWD do in the snow….nothing.  Quattro is what set the S8 apart, and what makes it an all-around performer in the real world.

Fast forward 5 years, introduce the bargain of the used sport sedan market.

2007 Audi S8 on eBay

Thank you for taking a moment to visit our latest Certified Audi offering. This 2007 Audi S8 has been pampered since birth and it shows. It is still covered by another 4 years and 30,000 miles of warranty, something you can’t say for many 2007 automobiles. This car comes to you accident free and ready to drive.

If you think there’s no point spending almost $100,000 for something with a 450-horsepower Lamborghini-sourced V-10 engine no one notices, then read no further. Audi’s new S8 isn’t for you. But if you like the idea of a big, fast, elegantly tailored limousine that slips effortlessly–and rapidly–under the radar, you’ll love this car. In an era when AMG Benzes are getting bolder and brassier with every model and BMW’s M cars are heading for techno-overkill, the subtle new S8 is the stealth-fighter of sport sedans.

You see, the S8 is a selfish pleasure. Nail the gas and that direct-injection, 5.2-liter V-10 emits a deep, velvety growl–a smooth-jazz remix of the Lamborghini Gallardo’s mighty bellow–and gives a satisfying shove between the shoulder blades. You can fan the Tiptronic paddles on the six-speed automatic if you like, but it’s better to let the computer do the thinking and allow the tach needle to kiss 7100 rpm on the upshifts, the engine clearing its throat with a soft whump! between each ratio.

Keep your right foot buried, and you’ll hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and 100 mph in 12.0 and nail the standing quarter mile in 13.4 seconds at 105.6 mph. No, it isn’t nosebleed-quick like an S65 Benz (for the record, AMG’s ueber-limo nails 60 mph in just 4.2 seconds, 100 in 9.3, and the standing quarter in 12.4 seconds at 116.5 mph, blowing the doors off a Porsche 911 Carrera S in the process). But there’s a crispness and flair to the big Audi’s power delivery that betrays the Italian soul buried deep in the machine.

That is the engine, of course. The basic architecture is shared with Lamborghini’s 513-horsepower, 5.0-liter Gallardo V-10, but the bores have been enlarged to boost capacity. Forged connecting rods allow a 7200-prm redline, and offset crankpins permit an even 72-degree firing cadence, smoothed further by a balance shaft located in the center of the block. The engine uses Audi’s FSI direct-injection system, which pumps fuel directly into each combustion chamber at high pressure, allowing a compression ratio of 12.5:1 and more efficient combustion. The result is not only a healthy 450 horsepower at 7000 rpm, but also, thanks to the variable intake manifold, a useful 398 pound-feet of torque at 3500 rpm.

Why a V-10? Audi claims it’s the perfect compromise between a V-12, which would need a longer block and suffer from more internal friction from the additional cylinders, valves, etc., and a V-8, which would be more compact, but would have larger, heavier pistons and wouldn’t rev as freely as a result. Offset bores mean the engine is just 26.9 inches long, with all ancillaries attached. Just as well, because most of it is hanging out ahead of the front axle.

Only dedicated Audiphiles will note the S8’s unique 20-inch alloys, quad exhaust (somewhat more tastefully executed than the bazookas you find peeking out from under the rear bumper of an AMG Benz), and trademark alloy-finish exterior mirrors. The discreet S8 moniker on the trunk and V-10 badges on each flank don’t exactly scream for attention. But that’s what makes this car so appealing. The S8 is for the driver who doesn’t have to show off–and knows it.

With V10 Lambo power, Quattro AWD, and finished in black, with the black leather interior, this S8 pushes all of the right buttons.  At 67K miles, I’d be hesitant to take on the maintenance of this monster; however this car is CPO to 100K which calms the nerves when getting in to a car like this.  The $39,995 this S8 is priced just a tick below retail, and it’s priced right where a comparable M5 would be.  So 5 years later, it seems as though all of those things that caused buyers to overlook the S8; the rarity, subtlety, in my eyes make it the most desirable option in the used sports sedan market.

2001 Audi S8 for sale

Within a couple of hours this past weekend, I drove past a manufacturer-plated, not-yet-for-sale 2012 S8 several times. With some extreme antennas and wires attached and two guys sitting inside examining a laptop, it must have been testing some manner of new equipment. Pushing the envelope of what big sedans can be is nothing new for the S8, and it made me think back to the original, Ronin-famed D2 S8 with it’s aluminum space frame and good-for-the-time 335hp 4.2-liter V8. The progression of S8s have been fantastic, but not to the extent where the original has lost much of its cache. Sure, it doesn’t have a V10 or twin-turbo V8 and is a couple hundred horsepower shy of those engines, but it still looks great and must still be a hoot to drive. So, while you could spend over $100k on the 2012 D4 (when it comes), or $50-70k for a used D3, you could get today’s D2 S8 in classic silver for under $9k.

2001 Audi S8 for sale on eBay

Seller’s Description:

Vision Custom Cars is pleased to offer you this 2001 Audi S8. You can own this car for a mere fraction of its original price.

I drove this car about 50 miles and noticed no problems with brake fade, no odd noises, and no blown speakers and no odd shakes or electrical issues of any kind. We serviced the car, detailed it, and took pics. All accessories worked well and the car on the whole seemed to run out exceptionally well. You could definitely tell it was well cared for. When I returned and checked it out in the shop I found no additional issues. The brakes seemed to have plenty of life left and the matching set of Michelin tires look to have plenty of life left on them as well.

The Good:

extra clean car – no rust – awesome color combo – leather seats with a ton of adjustments – great bose stereo – all aluminum lightweight chassis/body – just serviced and needs nothing – beautiful Audi – priced low! – xenon lights – rear & side sun shades – park sensors – tinted windows – all the toys! – Navigation

The Bad:

the rear sunshade sticks, other than that there really is nothing to note on the car, there is far less wear than normal for the miles. This car was VERY well cared for.

… This car qualifies for up to a 4 Year Warranty!

Provided the seller is being honest, having a rear sunshade the sticks be the only problem is incredible. 170k miles is a lot, but the bottom of the market for these can’t be much lower. A 4-year warranty would make it that much sweeter (but probably make the final price a bit more sour). Buy it for a winter cruiser and sell it for the same next year. Or drive it until until the wheels fall off. Either way, it’s a good price for a luxurious, quick, and well taken care-of sedan that looks like 10 times the asking price.

Clean 1st-Gen Audi S8s for sale on eBay

The first-generation Audi S8 commands a unique respect that, at least for me, has diminished in subsequent generations.  Its show-stealing display of performance in Ronin has helped this, as well as the advanced aluminum body and chassis, all powered by Audi’s now-ubiquitous 4.2L V8 pushing out a healthy 360hp.  It has ultimate sleeper status, but for the educated few it stands out with the Avus 6-spokes and mean stance.  The new, blingy V10 model just can’t match the subtle aggression of the D2.

These 2002/3 examples on eBay are exceptionally clean.  Neither has passed 90k miles and they show it.  The exteriors are clean, but the interiors are even more impressive.  I like 6-spoke wheels more than the 9-spokes, as well as that car’s suede gray interior over the other’s more garish white.  Both are priced pretty high at $18,600 and $20,950, but I guess the sellers expect the cleanliness and low miles to attract some big spenders.  I’d place a bid or make an offer, but the buy-it-nows seem too high, regardless of condition.
