When I was a younger lad, my father was looking for an upgrade to his BMW 635CSi for a track car, and we were scouting out E28 M5s. He finally picked one up, and we headed to the track – these were the days when, short of a modified 930, there wasn’t much faster on track than an E28 M5. We were at Lime Rock park, and I excitedly waited for him to come blowing down the front straight, decimating his competition in a wave of speed, power and sound. Yet, when he did appear on the front straight, his arm was out the window – pointing by what appeared to be a fairly unassuming 535i. My 15 year old self couldn’t really contemplate what had happened; how could a 535i possibly be faster than an M5? The answer was under the hood, where a Dinan Turbo kit subtly hid; with a reported 400 horsepower on tap at full boost, the M5 was no match for this supercar slayer. That power figure may well have been exaggerated by the owner, but it was no slouch, so I was excited to see a similar 533i 3.5 Dinan Turbo pop up in our Self-Service Classifieds:

With the introduction of the 991 series 911, one of the more talked about points was the fact that the 911 GT3 would be equipped solely with the PDK dual clutch gearbox. Purists cried foul, but the more progressive minded enthusiasts began to wonder if we have reached the point where the manual gearbox has been soundly surpassed by the automatic and automated manual gearboxes. Looking solely at the statistics, it appears the answer is “yes.” This 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo is for sale from our friends at Sun Valley Auto Club in Hailey, Idaho. For some, being equipped with the Tiptronic gearbox might be a vex, but however you slice it, this is still a seriously fast performance vehicle capable of forging long-lasting road trip memories.

2 CommentsAhhhh, the Audi V8 quattro. It’s like that friend that comes over, crashes on your couch, eats all of your food and smears his greasy hands on your furniture, insults your wife and leaves the toilet seat up, burps and farts in a business meeting, forgets your birthday, and asks to borrow a hundred bucks (or several thousand) that you know you’ll never get back. But he’s your friend, and it would take a lot more than just those indiscretions to make him otherwise. Every once in a while, your friend really dresses up and looks great, but most times that you see him he’s disheveled, unshowered and hacking up some fairly disgusting looking phlegm – which, incidentally, he spits out on your carpet. Sound awesome? My experience with the V8 quattro was pretty similar, and yet it’s a car that I just look at and daydream about. Few are in good shape and serviceable today; many more appear as these do; discarded, forgotten, permanent projects. And much like your college bum friends, they seem to congregate in groups, because of course you need a parts car for your parts car. So what are they doing here? Well, one of this particular lot happens to be the best of the bunch brought to the U.S. – the coveted 1991 Audi V8 quattro 5-speed:

You shouldn’t be surprised that Sir Mix-A-Lot has a wide body, huge bespoilered Porsche 911 Turbo that’s purple; after all, he did tell you he “likes big butts”, and this Porsche’s got back. Rap stars from the 1990s really moved into a new realm of bling; West Coast saw the destruction through twist-and-bounce of countless classic 1960s cars, but rappers like Sir Mix-A-Lot moved into new territory, taking brand new “whips” and modifying them. But the self-proclaimed “Mack Daddy”‘s modern-day pimp style didn’t follow traditional trends of giant America sleds with fuzzy dice; the Sir liked European metal – including this turned up 911 Turbo Convertible Slantnose:
