Tuner Tuesday: 1984 Mercedes-Benz 500SEC AMG

Yesterday I pulled up behind a lightly modded 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC in my Audi Coupe. It was interesting, having them parked together and considering that they were produced only 1 year apart, yet the target audience for each was so vastly different. The Audi, steeped in modernity and full of angles, appeared short and lithe next to the Leviathan Mercedes. It was the last of the 1970s dinosaurs that somehow was still roaming the earth in the early 1990s, shouting and stomping around the land that time forgot. Yet there’s an inherent appeal in these cars too; beyond build quality and luxury, even beyond the fluid design of the pillarless coupe. There’s just something that is right about the C126, and pop some period AMG bits on and roll it in the period drug of choice, all that is missing is the Miami Vice soundtrack and some rolled up white sport coat sleeves:

Super nice rare 1984 Mercedes 500Sec European model for sale. VIN WDB1260441A071836

This is a real European Model that was first sold in Europe and exported to California. Original service book is stamped from Europe. Imported years ago by the 2nd owner and subsequently sold to the 3rd owner in Los Gatos California. The car still has its 1980s Sunshine California license plate that is no longer available.

This car has been stored in the garage the last 10 years. Its only been driven about 300 miles in 10 years. Old smog records are included to verify mileage and service records. I have an Autoweek magazine article on the Euro 500SEC model that is included with sale. Pic below.

Genuine AMG parts are included with this 80s iconic coupe. At first glance you notice the Mono color bright white 500Sec with white out Chrome, grill, side trim and moldings. The Penta wheels are genuine 16″ ATS wheels wrapped with brand new Pirelli tires.

The full AMG body kit is complete and in perfect shape. Spoiler is not cracked or damaged. The interior is just as beautiful as the exterior. Inside are the period correct rare Recaro Seats with power controls and lumbar. AMG 4 spoke steering wheel compliments the interior as well. Leather and carpets are in excellent condition. AMG speedo faceplate.

Car still has a factory working Becker radio. Seats are operational and they are super comfortable.

I just had the oil changed and tires replaced. The car runs excellent. It has been stored and is now ready to drive.

I couldn’t find anything on the “Sport Vehicle Specialists” that are stamped on the VIN plate to see if they were a licensed AMG dealer in the 1980s; perhaps one of our better versed AMG readers could chime in. It certainly looks the part, from the body mods to the ATS wheels and some wildly awesome Recaros. It’s also not entirely clear if this car has the full-steam AMG motor either, and that would certainly affect value. We’ve seen some pretty similar condition period SECs sell for close to the asking price of this particular example, and with the 126 chassis generally on the rise I’d argue that if evidence suggests this was all done in period, this car is probably worth close to the asking price for the right person. It may be a throwback, but it’s a particularly vivid example that will turn your 80s dreams into reality.
