1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

I think I have said this before, though perhaps not, but one of the best aspects of the surge in air-cooled 911 values has been the sheer number of unique, interesting, or just downright beautiful examples we have begun to come across through auctions. We all have our personal favorites amongst the very rare and, sometimes, very fast 911s that have been produced during the marque’s existence, but it is the variety of standard Carreras that is most compelling and keeps many of us coming back day after day to see what we will chance upon next. This all brings us to the car we see here: a Marine Blue Metallic over Linen interior 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in New York, with 53,000 miles on it. As I mentioned previously, the Targa tends to be the least valuable of the 3.2 Carrera models and for those who enjoy the design it offers a great chance of appreciating and owning one of these fantastic machines for a little less of an outlay than a comparable Coupe or Cabriolet.

This is the second Targa in a row I have come across that really looks fantastic, though like the previous car there remain aspects that leave me cold. Unlike most Targas I enjoy the way the whale tail looks on this model. It appears more integrated than on other colors I’ve seen, perhaps owing to the Marine Blue paint, and provides a nice balance to the overall shape, especially when the targa top is in place. It still looks a little funky when the top is removed, but not too bad. Like last week’s Targa, the interior here is my biggest problem. The variety of color contrasts just doesn’t work for me and I feel it would be better suited in all black or, in this case, composed entirely of the brown trim we see on the dash. I do appreciate the originality of the color scheme and I’m sure it will provide a means to set this Targa apart from others on the market, it just isn’t what I would prefer. This is a lovely Targa though with fairly low miles that appears entirely original so it’s sure to find itself in a good home.

I’d be curious to see the original paperwork regarding the burgundy dash. Wash it interior to sample color? Since the claim is it’s original. That would make it extremely rare. Kind of odd they didn’t go with a color more suited to the exterior.

@John you read my mind on this one….linen interior/blue exterior…..eggplant/burgundy colored dash & steering wheel??????….I thought maybe the pictures were distorted…

I googled the VIN, there’s an interesting for sale ad from a Carolina regional Porsche club (scroll to 38th page), says he was the 3rd owner. Doesn’t mention the unusual interior spec. Magically it went from being a 3-owner car FS in the Southeast to being called a “2-owner California car” today. Ha.

I’m honestly shocked the current seller hasn’t called out that it’s a “1 of 1” optioned car, it must be.

Wow, I completely ignored the potentially rarity of this interior. I think I was too confused by the variety of colors and forgot to take that into account. John, as you suggest, we certainly need to have the proper documentation, but if this is original that does make it quite rare. That the seller makes no mention of it is perhaps a red flag, but certainly worth looking into nonetheless.

Having owned an 80 SC Targa and an 87 Carrera Targa, IMO, The whale tale looks completely out of place on this model. Now the ducktail spoiler, that’s a better look to me if you must have a spoiler at all. Cheers.
