Double Take: Iconic Blues – 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

This post is aimed at a pretty specific audience since the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS itself is already a niche vehicle and the two we have here further shrink that niche with their very bright exteriors. I love Porsche’s pastel blues and here we have two of the best and most well known that have been offered, each coming from a different era in Porsche’s history. Mexico Blue and Riviera Blue. Both were paint-to-sample options for the GT3 RS and add an additional layer of cachet to what is already a very high demand machine. The asking prices are, of course, absurd, but given how few of each of these must exist I suppose it is the price that must be paid to own such a potential icon. Let’s begin with the older of the two colors: Mexico Blue:

Mexico Blue originally was offered in the ’70s following the retirement of the very pretty Pastel Blue. It’s perhaps slightly darker, but in no way would any of these colors be confused for a dark blue. The color jumps out at you immediately. Because these colors are non-metallic the nature of the color itself has to provide all of its vibrancy and here we can really see a stark contrast in the way Mexico Blue looks under direct light and then indoors out of direct light. It looks like two different cars! A great color nonetheless. I’m not sure I’m a fan of the black wheels we see here as it seems to create too stark a contrast with the exterior paint, but I’m sure plenty of people will enjoy it. Much of the rest of this GT3 RS is fairly standard so everything comes down to the exterior paint. Let’s now turn things up just a little bit and look at Riviera Blue:

While it may not even seem possible Riviera Blue is even more of a pastel than Mexico Blue and I think that shows well here. Mexico Blue pops well under direct light, whereas Riviera Blue sort of pops no matter what. The colors are close, but that seems to be the biggest difference. This GT3 RS has taken that hyperactive pastel nature of its exterior and continued it – we might even say enhanced it – in the interior where we see Black contrasted by both Lava Orange stitching and door pulls along with Riveria Blue vents and navigation surround. On its own, the Lava Orange stitching works really well on the black seats. As a contrast with the exterior it’s a little odd, but ultimately still looks good. When we add the vents and surrounds in the interior the color contrasts become too jarring for my tastes. Maybe in person it will look better, but in pictures it looks strange, especially the vents. But I guess if you’re going to go for something wild you might as well go all out, right?

As for the pricing, each is priced pretty similarly and both are very low mileage, as we’d expect. The premium being asked for these special colors is more than $100K more than where we’re seeing most examples of the GT3 RS priced these days. For a while almost every one on the market was above $300K, but they have mostly come well down in price with some even dipping below $250K. So you really have to want one of these colors to even begin considering these, but there are going to be very few you’ll find that are better assuming you’re a fan of blue.
