2002 BMW M Coupe S54

It’s been a little while since we wrote up our last M Coupe, a beautiful S52 powered Estoril Blue example. And while those early M Coupes are a great deal these days for a fun performance car with plenty of personality, most enthusiasts really want to get their hands on the later cars that came with the S54 motor. There weren’t many other changes to the 2001 and 2002 M Coupes besides this motor swap, but that was enough to make the already good E36/8 all the more entertaining. These later build cars carry a premium due to their increased performance and exclusivity and seem to come up for sale less than the early cars do. Today, there is a brilliant looking Sapphire Black over black leather example on Ebay:

2004 BMW M3

It’s been a while since I posted the last Phoenix Yellow M3, a car which I strongly desire. I was reminded of how great this color is (to me, anyway) when the press photos of the new M4 coupe in Phoenix Yellow were released. While it is certainly a polarizing color, I really think when clean with the right wheels this shade rocks. The E46 M3s have been on the downward slope of value over the past few years, with many ending up in the hands of people who either abuse or neglect them, and those that thoroughly modify them to questionable taste. This particular example seems to have avoided that fate, with lower miles and in original and pristine stock form:

Year: 2004
Model: M3
Engine: 3.2 liter inline-6
Transmission: 6-speed manual
Mileage: 46,581 mi
Price: No Reserve Auction

Clean Carfax, 1-Owner, rare color combination! This 2004 BMW M3 is in great shape and has only 46k miles and features the E46 generation body. Some of the great options on this vehicle are Bluetooth, Heated Leather seats, Harmon Kardon Sound System, CD, Climate Control, and is equipped with a true 6sp manual transmission. Pictures don’t do this M3 justice, this is one of the nicest around!

Visit Denny Dotson Automotive Inc. online at www.dennydotson.com to see more pictures of this vehicle or call us at 740-967-8080 today to schedule your test drive.

Generally value on the early 2001/2002 M3 coupes has been cresting in the mid to high teens, but with several days left on the auction this car has already pushed $20,000 in bidding. That’s likely due to the rare color combination, lower miles and great overall condition. While I love the color, if I were getting into this car the wheels would need to be replaced by the great Competition-spec BBS wheels. Further, I really wish the interior was a color other than black – though it seems that few of the Phoenix cars this was the dominant color choice. Other than that, though, this is a lower mile great enthusiast car that you can still tinker with on your own. I suspect in the future these will become quite highly sought after in stock form – and that future isn’t too far away. Get one while you still can!

2002 BMW M Coupe sunroof delete

The BMW M Coupe has become the darling of the hardcore Bimmer enthusiast, providing a lot of power in a small package that, in the words of Car and Driver “makes you do bad things.” In 2001, the original E36/8 M Coupe was given a heart transplant in the form of the S54 engine, a 3.2 liter inline-6 pumping out 315 horsepower. While it only offered 15 more pound-feet of torque than the outgoing S52 motor, the upper limits of the rev range was where this new engine came alive, providing addictive amounts of power at higher RPMs. This particular M Coupe for sale in Maryland is very rare, as it is a sunroof delete model, adding even a bit more sporting flair to an already mental package.

I am pleased to offer this beautiful 2002 S54 BMW M Coupe in Titanium Silver over Black leather. 1 of 5 produced. Rare Sunroof-Delete Model and very desirable S54 engine. This coupe is nearly flawless, has spent its entire life in the hands of a collector, and has always been rested in an indoor garage. The odometer shows just over 50k miles, with very little wear on the interior or exterior. All VIN stickers are present and the body has never seen any paint or body work – 100% original. The coupe smells, drive, and looks brand new. The interior is a 9.5 out of 10, with only the very pickiest eyes noticing any wear on the driver seat or shift knob. The exterior is a 9.5 out of 10, with only one or two very small scratches or rock chips from driving (only noticeable from 12 inches away). The right rear wheel has a few nicks. The car has been maintained properly since new and comes with fresh fluids that include:

1. Oil change (Fully Synthetic Lubro Moly)
2. Brand new Good Year tires
3. Brand new OEM brake pads & rotors.
4. Coolant Flush
5. Brake Fluid Flush
6. Rear Differential and Manual Transmission Flush.

Again, the car is literally flawless and all options and accessories work as they should. There are no stories with this Coupe and is ready for a new owner. Detailed pictures can be found here:

Unless you go for a high mileage one, any M Coupe with under 75,000 miles these days is going to be fairly pricey, especially one with the S54 motor. Call it the E30 effect if you’d like. While over $32,000 may sound pricey, we’re probably not far off the mark, especially if any collectors out there have been searching high and low for an S54 without the sunroof. One of our feature rides, a 2001 M Coupe sold for $29,000 back in February. That car had 67,000 miles on it at the time. Given that comparison, I’d suspect the $30,000 mark is about the norm these days for a clean S54 engined M Coupe with low miles.

Another slick looking package; these Phoenix Yellow cars are polarizing but definitely stand out from the crowd. The 19s really make the M3 package look that little more “right” in my mind. The car appears to sit a little low in front which makes me think it was probably modified by the previous owner; the handbrake lever and rear “diffuser” would seem to indicate that as well. Other downsides? There appears to have been an accident a few years back, but it was still when the vehicle was pretty expensive so I’d imagine proper repairs were undertaken; then there’s the SMG – I just can’t say I’m a huge fan of it. However, as I’ve looked around at E46 M3s, most of the Phoenix Yellow cars seem to be SMG equipped – so unless you snap up one of those rare 6 speeds that pop up from time to time, this may have to be your combo if you want the color. Price is a little high given the condition, but not much – as I said in the other M3 post, these cars are a performance bargain right now, but I expect the 6 speeds will hold value better down the road and the SMGs will continue to fall a bit.

2001 BMW M3

509

Edit: This car sold pretty quickly for the $14,950 asking price. Stay tuned for the next one!

In close competition with the Porsche 968 for “Best Deal in Performance German Coupes” has to be the E46 M3. Like the E36s, as new generations have come out these 333 horsepower screamers from Munich have been on a steady slide down in value, and suddenly within the last year or so we’ve seen the first really ratty examples start popping up. I have a close friend with an E46, and I think he sums it up well; it’s go all the go, stop and cornering you need and it’s the last of the M cars that you can really fix yourself. Not only that, but the E46 is noted for decent reliability and – at least in my mind – looked the part; a little more stand out than the nearly stock-bodied E36 but not as fussy as then E9x design. It’s truly a good looking car. While most flock to Laguna Seca Blue, Imola or Carbon Black, my favorite color for this car has to be Phoenix Yellow, like today’s example:

Perfect color, lower miles, 6 speed; the only thing missing to me is Imola leather and either the CSL or Euro option 19″ wheels. Room for 4, a spacious trunk, and enough go to shut up muscle cars, this is an intoxicating combination. Known problems include fuel pumps, rattling exhaust and suspensions that get squeaky, but all in all these are a great performance deal right now; they’ll easily outpace E36 and E30 M3s in stock form, yet are able to be a daily driver reasonably and even get decent fuel economy. It’s a shame, in some ways, that BMW went away from this platform, because even 13 years later it still looks quite fresh.

Show you’re Z Man: 2000 Z3 M Roadster and 2006 Z4 M Coupe

509

Last week I speculated in my Z Coupe post that we were seeing a good opportunity to get into some of the rarest BMWs offered on these shores, the Z coupes. While those two Z coupes were the non-M version and both were trick in their own way, it seems most of you prefer to see the M versions. I get it; they’re fast, flashy and fun, so today I cooked up an interesting comparison again between the E36/7 and E36/8s – this time a Z4 M coupe against a Z3 M roadster. Let’s start with the brilliant looking Imola Red coupe:

509

Year: 2006
Model: Z4 M Coupe
Engine: 3.2 liter inline-6
Transmission: 6-speed manual
Mileage: 18,912 mi

CLICK FOR DETAILS: 2006 BMW Z4 M Coupe on eBay

If you are looking for the rare E86 M Coupe then you already know that it is regarded by BMW Enthusiasts as the last true Ultimate Driving Machine before BMWs became too electronic and took the fun out of driving with adjustable suspensions, turbochargers, automated transmissions and buttons to adjust the steering, exhaust note and everything else. Here’s a quick background so you know how much I truly love these cars. I was an intern for AutoWeek magazine in college when this car had its press introduction in the US. One of our editors drove one back to Detroit and I took it out for gas and a car wash. I immediately fell in love with the classic long hood, short deck proportions, the unbelievably responsive drivetrain, the seats that felt like they were custom made for me and the thickest little steering wheel I had ever set hands on. I vowed to myself to buy one when I could afford it. So in late 2008 I started conducting a nationwide search almost nightly (with only about 1,800 built in ’06-’08, you have to look nationwide for these cars) looking for a low mileage car with carbon leather trim, heated seats, the premium package and the VERY RARE extended leather package. I finally found an Imola Red M that fit all the options, it was a one owner just traded in at Asheville BMW in Asheville, NC and only had 7,500 miles on it and BMW had certified it as a pre-owned car and extended the warranty. Not surprisingly, I bought it the next day and it has been my pride and joy since. It is stored in mid November and comes out around the first of May. In the 4.5 years I’ve owned it I have put about 2,500 miles on it each year and it sits covered in my garage otherwise. The ONLY reason I’m selling it is because I’m getting married in July and will be buying a house soon. As you can see in the pictures the car is complete with 2 factory keys, all the books/manuals/DVD/original window sticker in the leather BMW binder. I have only had it at the BMW dealer once to replace the driver’s seat belt that was not retracting well and they serviced it under BMW’s free maintenance plan. The computer is not calling for the next service for another 9,500 miles. I replaced the battery in 2012. Since I drive the car so easily the OE Continental tires still have good tread left on them. The only thing I can think of that should be done in the next year is to have the front brake rotors resurfaced.

Factory Options included:
$1,800 – Extended leather option (covers center console, doors and sun visors in leather and make the interior look and fell much more premium. This option is VERY RARE.)
$2,500 Premium Package (best part of this package is the 10-speaker Hi-Fi stereo that sounds amazing)
Carbon Leather Interior trim (very neat looking leather finish around the center console and on the dash facing)
$500 Heated seats
$1,800 DVD Nav system with flip up screen

I’ve also included a picture showing the most significant rock chip located on the passenger side rear wheel flare. This wheel is also the only wheel with any curb rash and it is very minor. Trust me, I’m not happy that it’s there either. I could try to get a picture of it and email it to you if you are concerned. There are a few very light scratches here and there but they did not photograph even well enough to see and the car has been detailed regularly.

If you’re looking for a sports car that is a joy to drive and own, don’t buy a Corvette. Buy something rare like this that you won’t see in your neighborhood. In fact, I’ve only EVER seen one other M Coupe in Michigan. Remember, only 380 were built in 2006. The seats are amazing, the highly tuned straight six engine just builds power toward the 8,000 rpm redline, the 6-speed manual is a joy and the comfort features and great stereo make any trip a delight. Feel free to contact me with any questions. As you can tell I love to talk about these cars.

Note: Most of these pictures are from 2009 shortly after I bought the car but you’d never know I didn’t take them yesterday. Car is certainly one of the cleanest low mileage M Coupes left that is still Factory Stock in every way. Car may accumulate more miles if Michigan blesses me with some beautiful Fall days!

Just about everything about this car is perfect to me. I guess if pushed, I’d prefer Techno Violet as the color, but otherwise, it’s spot on. I had a student at a BMW Driver’s Education with a Techno Violet Z4 M Coupe and was totally floored by the out-of-the-box performance. It drove like a race car – and at race car speeds – but had the comfort of a streetable coupe. As a complete package, this car compares very favorably to late model 911s but at effectively half the price of most. To some, though, these small coupe interiors can be a bit claustrophobic. Why not drop the top then and look into that bright blue sky in this Evergreen Z3 M Roadster:

This is indeed a pretty rare color combination and probably should be the signature color for this car. It’s a neat shade and seems to suit the shape well, with a flashy but still appropriate degree of aggressiveness. I’m not such a huge fan of the matching leather, but if you’re going all in, why not. At about half the price of the M Coupe this car offers plenty of thrills, a spectacular soundtrack out the back, and miles of open sky above you. It’s not a race car but again compared to what you’d get in a 911 or Boxster convertible, this car compares reasonably favorably and stands out from the crowd a bit more – at least around me, Boxster and 911 convertibles are a dime a dozen; there aren’t too many days that I don’t see them, but M Roadsters and M Coupes are very rare sights indeed.

If it were my money I’d have to go with the Z4 coupe. I know it’s twice the price, but I was so surprised by how that package drove and felt, even years later it sticks in my mind. It’s hard to say you’d go wrong with either, though; drive them lightly and they’re not likely to lose much if any value over the next few years. Which one would you have?

2005 Dinan S3 BMW M3

When I wrote up yesterday’s 2002 Dinan S3-R M3, I wanted to find an equivalent model to it for sale for value comparison. Naturally, I think the best counterpoint would be a lower mile late build E46 M3 equipped with the ZHP competition package, the hardest-edged M3 available without modification in the U.S.. To my surprise, I found an even better comparison; a ZCP equipped M3 with enough modifications to get a Dinan registration, but without the supercharger and suspension rework of the S3-R. Today’s example looks ready to race in Imola Red:

Year: 2005

The ZCP Competition Package on the M3 added some nice details, but in my eye the best of those is by far the wheels. Those BBS 19” wheels transform the car’s look to be both prettier and more aggressive at the same time. There are some modifications to add some power – the exhaust sounds great, the throttle bodies add a few horsepower, and the 3.91 rear end gives you a bit better acceleration, but to me these modifications don’t really alter the M3’s basic characteristics, unlike the supercharger addition in the S3-R. Imola Red fits the character of the M3 well and is one of the prettier reds available on any car, although I still don’t understand why anyone would spec a car with black leather. This car with caramel leather, or better yet Imola leather, would just put it over the top in my opinion. As is, though, the car presents very well and looks to be in fabulous shape.

Both the 2002 Dinan S3-R M3 and this car are priced right at the top of the E46 market. One of the long term benefits of not having the supercharger is less wear on the transmission (in my mind, a big benefit with the SMG) and perhaps a less expensive engine rebuild/replacement if you owned it long enough. To me, that’s probably a good enough trade off for the loss of acceleration. I don’t think the Dinan registration helps the value short or long term on this vehicle, but I also don’t really think the modifications detract from the value and are pretty easily reversible if you wanted to revert to stock specification. Which would you rather have?

GCFSB Exclusive: 2002 BMW M3

driversside

On a daily basis the staff at GCFSB scours online ads looking for rare, obscure and cool German cars for sale. While the Internet is a great resource for searching the globe for these rides, more often than not the real gems can’t be found online; rather, they come about by networking and word of mouth. Enter this beautiful E46 M3.

Here in New England, there is a great network of German car enthusiasts like the seller of this beauty. Bought a few years ago as a toy, this impecably maintained Steel Grey over red leather E46 M3 is too great a car not to feature here.

Enthusiast owned, meticulously maintained and with only 46K miles on the clock, this is the sort of car that would make a great weekend warrior for the M3 fan. With most E46s turning 100K miles and either abused or modified, this tastefully modified example would be a great addition to the right stable. While the asking price it at the top of the market, clean E46 M3s are becoming harder to find, so examples like this should command a premium price. So why would someone sell off such a beautiful car you may ask? The story of this M3 is all too common, with the seller’s sights have shifted to other things…in this case from München to Stuttgart. Something has to go…

2001 BMW M Coupe on BimmerForums – REVISIT

The below post originally appeared on our site January 26, 2013:

Of all the cars to be introduced in the last fifteen years, one of my favorites has to be the BMW M Coupe. My fellow contributor Brian recants the line from Talledega Nights from time to time – “I wanna go fast.” Well, if ever there was a car to do it in, this is it. Towards the end of the M Coupe production run, the S54 3.2 liter inline six took over the duty of motivating this speedy little car, with horsepower at 315. These cars are fast becoming the modern day E30 M3, with values increasing accordingly. This M Coupe for sale in Georgia comes to us from our reader Tony.

I wouldn’t consider the M Coupe as a future classic, as I think we’ve already arrived at classic status. Built in small numbers, power and performance to blow your mind and looks only a mother could love are just part of where the intriguing story begins. These M Coupes also act as a bridge between the BMWs of yore and those currently offered, it has enough simplicity to please the most hardcore enthusiasts but offers modern day mega performance. Good luck with the sale, Tony!

2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe

The Z3-based BMW M Coupe is fast becoming the new E30 M3 with performance enthusiasts and folks longing for the simpler days at BMW. The car which succeeded it in 2006 hasn’t quite grabbed the attention of the discerning collector, as it was only sold for two years in more limited numbers than its predecessor: 1,815 units in all. The S54 3.2 liter inline six was back for another appearance, delivering 330 horsepower at a high-revving 7900 rpm.

This Z4 M Coupe for sale in Mississippi looks rather tame in light metallic gray, but rest assured, it packs a hefty punch.

The “ZED” 4 M: Reviewed on more than one occasion by BBC’s Top Gear and many other televised enthusiasts. Playboy’s 2007 car of the year: a BMW Z4M Coupe. Boasts a 3.2 liter, 330-hp high-performance in-line six cylinder with a six-speed shifter.

From Engine Technology International, the S54 engine residing within its chassis won the International Engine of the Year award upon its introduction in 2001 as well as winning the 3.0 to 4.0 liter category for six consecutive years between 2001 and 2006.

Forbes mentions the 2007 Z4 M Coupe as a two-seater, it accelerates from zero to 60 in less than 4.9 seconds and boasts a 6-cylinder, 3.2-liter engine. Rounded fenders and flat rear glass add a touch of class that received Consumer Reports’ highest-possible rating for accident-avoidance capabilities and a substantially better-than-average frequency of insurance injury-claim filings, according to the HLDI.

Comes with free lifetime satellite radio! Looking for a car that’s sexy, dependable and safe, then you’ve found the one.

The mid $20,000 range seems to be about where most of these Z4M coupes in decent shape are hovering, which is a little less expensive than some mint Z3 M Coupes we’ve seen here at GCFSB of late. Both Z3 and Z4 M Coupes have styling that is a bit polarizing, but I happen to like both cars, as they stay true to the basic formula yet are distinctive enough from each other. While the opening bid doesn’t leave a lot of room to go north, I’d suspect this car will sell. With limited production and a unique, no-nonesense performance formula, these Z4 M Coupes will more than likely be the next collectible BMW classic.
