1976 Porsche 911 Targa

This particular car may appeal more to any European readers we have than those in the US, but perhaps there’s someone out there who’s interested in importing a European 911. Here we have a Guards Red 1976 Porsche 911 Targa located in Portugal. In 1976 we were still quite a few years away from Porsche releasing a 911 Cabriolet so these early targas were the best available option for open-top motoring. Given the amount of coastline in Portugal we can understand the desire of an owner seeking a fuller experience on any drive. This 911 also has the distinction of being one of the few 4-speed-manual equipped 911s I can recall coming across, even if that’s a distinction serving more as a peculiarity than as a desirable feature, along with, as the seller notes, a few “improvements” including a 3.2 Carrera front bumper and a nice set of 16″ Fuchs.

It´s the first time that I drive 911 with a 4Speed gearbox. It´s amazing how fast it is and friendly useable. It was a very good experience indeed!

I’ll admit, I don’t generally consider this generation of the 911 as a likely candidate for restoration, though perhaps we’re at a point where it’s a worthwhile venture for just about any air-cooled 911 to undergo. The mileage has not been stated though it sounds as if this car has seen little action since being restored in 2008 and its general appearance does suggest light use. Given the overall trajectory of the mid-year 911s even a restored example such as this one remains a driver-quality alternative rather than something for collectors to pursue. That makes the asking price here a bit higher than what most would probably be seeking to spend, but it’s once again another interesting example for those seeking out one of these early cars.

IIRC the early 930 had a four speed.

@Stephen, yes you are correct. I should have been more clear, I meant that I had not come across a 4-speed in a non-turbo 911, but these were standard in the 930 all the way until 1989!
