Nearly as rare to see as the 1984 Jetta GLi is the model that replaced it, the 1985-1987 8V Jetta GLi. While I’ve lamented several times that we didn’t receive the 4 door GTi until just recently, the reality is that for all intents and purposes, through 1992 the GLi was a 4 door GTi with a trunk. They shared nearly all of their running gear, styling and performance; the only difference was the non-folding seats and the trunk. Despite this the GTi was the more popular option for most, and the GLis that were sold suffered from rust and heavy use. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I saw a fairly clean early A2 GLi for sale; but here’s a pretty good example today!

Though it wasn’t the most popular interior, I’m a sucker for the seats in this GLi because I owned a set when I made my GolfTi back in the 1990s. It’s a nice interior for sure, and though there is some bolster wear overall the interior looks nice. The GLi and GTi got red trim surrounds and blacked out B-pillars and badges as their only external identification; the original GLi grill badge is missing from this model. Inside in addition to the GLi Recaro-style seats was the golf ball shifter, a higher speedometer and trip computer. Eagle-eyed readers will also see the fog light switch, though the original lights seem to be missing. These GLis also got intermittent wipers and A/C, a reminder of when those were both options and luxuries! Overall condition is quite good for this vintage, though the front trim piece under the lights is a bit pushed in on the driver’s side and the driver’s door looks like it has a sizable dent. Despite these problems, mileage is on the lower side and the seller provides many detailed photos showing what looks to be a rust-free rarity. At $3,500, you could get into a higher mile 16V example; but for the condition and rarity I think this car is reasonably well priced and looks like it could offer the next owner some practical fun!

It’s great to see a Mk2 GLI in such a well-preserved state. My father owned a 1985 GLI in Atlas grey, 5-speed, with the same leatherette/pinstripe velour interior… very attractive for its time and had no major mechanical issues in six years of ownership. I wish he’d kept it for a few more years until I reached driving age… instead, he swapped it for a Ford Taurus SHO and I wound up with our wheezy Volvo 740 wagon!
