The paint-to-sample Nautical Blue 1988 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe we featured in mid-April is back up for another reserve auction. This time there is no Buy It Now price listed, but it is likely safe to say that the reserve will not have come down far, if at all, from that original BIN of $67,500. That’s likely too high, but we will have to see just how high the bidding, which currently sits at $44,600, will get this time.

We might look at this dark blue metallic 3.2 Carrera and think that it’s a standard color that we would come across fairly often. After all, Porsche did offer a variety of shades of blue, canvassing most of the spectrum, during the 3.2 Carrera’s production run, and these days dark blue is a pretty common color to come across from any marque. Yet, I sit here trying to think of the last time I actually came across a classic 911 in a color like this. This particular blue happens to be paint-to-sample so by definition it is a little more rare, but even among the standard colors offered at the time there do not seem to be a lot of these early 911s in this sort of color. All of this to say that I really like this one. There are things I would change: I could do without the yellow lens on the fog lights and I always prefer a whale tail on a Carrera Coupe – and since this has the front spoiler already the tail would balance things out nicely. In a perfect world I’d prefer a different interior shade as well. Still, this is a striking exterior color that is eye catching without being flashy and, as always, a reminder of the excellent variety Porsche has long made available for buyers desiring a particular color that might sit slightly outside the norm.

I would really like to ignore the BIN price when looking at this car since it is far too high and likely stems from the money the seller has invested in recent maintenance. All of that work is a nice bonus for the next buyer, and does warrant some increase in value for this car, but the only Carreras I have seen in the neighborhood of this BIN came equipped with the M491 package and this car doesn’t have that. Bidding has been somewhat slow and I do wonder if that high BIN is deterring some bidders. This currently sits at $35,100 with a couple days remaining and I’d guess there’s still another $10K to go before this reaches the sort of price where I’d expect it to sell. For a beautiful 911 with pretty low mileage and a good deal of recent maintenance there is certainly a lot to like here, but the seller is going to have to come down on the price by quite a bit.

The car has been listed all over the internet many times. The asking price was so far over the market it was not going to sell for anything near what was being asked. It looks like a well done car but for the money they were seeking it needed to be 100% original and lower miles.
Just wondering how much a Porsche of this vintage has appreciated in the last 4 years? Was this a 20K car a few years ago?
A reader popped a comment on Facebook that the car sold; sure enough, it’s been removed from eBay. Not clear if the comment came from the new buyer or what the final price was.
@Another Bob…. until 2 years ago these had been $20 to 25K cars for the last decade. Over the last 24 months they have become the hot collector car to own and the prices are getting silly.
It appears this car has sold. We wont get to know the price but its been on the market for a few months now and its been shopped around all the popular websites. I seriously doubt it sold for any number in the $50’s let alone the asking price. Its a nice color but its got some sort of history and too much of it has had to be rebuilt / sprayed / fixed… for it to be able to draw the top dollar all original cars do.
I watch the air-cooled market very closely and I have owned a couple dozen over the last few decades, I have helped dozens of people buy theirs too. I think I have a reasonable handle on the market. I don’t think the market is keeping up with the asking prices these days. As these cars have started selling at higher and higher prices, all kids of cars are coming out of the wood work. Dealers are seeking ridiculous sums for the top flight cars and private sellers are asking silly prices for essentially tired cars. I am not seeing nearly as many sales as even last fall yet asking prices are still climbing.
It’d be really nice to know what the selling price was. I’m not sure exactly when the auction was ended, but when I checked in on it a little after 9am it was still at $44.6K and bidding had been stuck at that price for a few days. So I’m guessing the seller had an offer a bit above that, saw the writing was on the wall and finally figured it was time to move on.
I inquired to the person who left the comment, we’ll see if he replies.
I’ve owned many, many 911s of various specs since 1968, and none of them needed this much work at 51,000 miles.
I agree Justin, thats my point exactly. This car clearly had some back story we dont get to know all about given it needed to much work.
Carter…. we wont get to know the price no matter who responds.
