1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Coupe

Introduced in 1989, the 964 brought with it the first significant changes to the 911 in nearly two decades. The body design underwent comprehensive revision, albeit the shape remained fundamentally that of the 911, engine displacement was bumped to 3.6 liters, and, perhaps most significantly, Porsche introduced its first all-wheel-drive 911, the Carrera 4. In 1990, the Carrera 2 soon followed along with the 964 Turbo. This was what we might call the first modern 911, equipped with power steering, ABS, airbags, and climate control marking the end of the classic 911 period. The Porsche 964 is perhaps Porsche’s most innovative model for their famed air-cooled generation of cars. It was a bold departure from the beloved Carrera of the late 80’s. Porsche boldly beefed up its performance with a newly designed 3.6 liter air cooled flat six power plant producing 247 hp and the Carrera 2 version delivering 0 to 60 times in 5.5 seconds. The 964 also introduced for the first time coil spring suspension, power steering, and ABS brakes bringing the overall performance of Porsche’s new 911 to a whole new level. The new body design consisted of smoother bumpers, more integrated rockers and most notably the recessed rear spoiler that would raise when speeds reached 45 MPH all while preserving the beautiful lines of the car while at rest.

As prices have continued to climb for the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera, I have been hoping to feature a few more examples of the 964 so as to get a sense of the market for it relative to the classic 911. Unfortunately, these cars don’t tend to come up for sale quite as often. Why that may be, I am not sure, though I wonder if some owners are waiting to see the market develop slightly more. Unlike the 993, which enjoyed immediate collector success as the last of the air-cooled 911s, the 964 occupies a middle place between the 993 and the end of the classic 911 design. Values have remained fairly stable, though with some increase, but if the rising markets for the 911SC and 3.2 Carrera are any indication, the 964 should begin trending upward quite soon. For anyone looking for the last few values on an air-cooled 911, the time to strike may be now.

    Prices have already appreciated on 964’s. Some even higher than the 993.
    For example: I bought a 25,000 mile 964 RS America 10 years ago, which I paid $42,000 for. At that time, it was top asking price. Today, the car is apraised at $70,000.
    If this 964 with 73,000 miles sells for the asking of $39,000, that is almost the same price I paid for my RSA, and I had 1/3 of the miles.

    I’ve always liked 964 C2s but they were too expensive when I bought my 3.2 in 2010 – most were in the low-mid twenties and my 120K mile 3.2 was $14k 🙂

  3. As with all other air-cooled 911’s, prices for clean 964’s seem to have jumped $10K or so over the last few years. There’s an awful lot less on the ground than G-series 911’s or the later 993. Perhaps Singer has pushed prices up, as they seem to have changed popular perception of these cars.

    I always thought I’d go for a 993, but after a lot of consideration on purely aesthetic and emotional grounds, the 964 pushes all the right buttons for me.

    This is a clean example, but the later wheels are unfortunate, along with the non-OEM stereo. Most seem to be Carrera 4’s, or even worse, tiptronic, though.

    I’d pay $28K in a heartbeat, but at $38K, it makes you think.

  4. yes I’ve been watching the 964 market and prices for good examples have really appreciated…and quickly!….partly because the 993 market is so damn high….and partly because IMHO people realize that a 964 is a really great car….
    that said low mileage aside….and the condition looks really good…38k is a bit strong…I would think that the dealer would take quite a bit less if you show up will $$$ in hand…
    this is not a C4 (more desirable)…and not a wide bodied car either….it is a straight no frills C2….
    I agree w/ Chris E. 28/30k would be my top top number if I were looking for a N/A car…

  5. I forgot to mention, it’s worth looking up Alois Ruf’s personal 911 if you’re a fan of the 964. On the pitfall side, the dual distributor arrangement and dual-mass flywheel sound a bit disconcerting.

    I never thought I’d say it…but how about the 996?!? It’s perhaps all that’s left in the more reasonably affordable category we all love here ($25K or less). I’d make mine a ’99 and hope she doesn’t blow. Too bad about the cost-cutting design, but it may prove to be the underdog in the end. That, or find a nice ’83 911 SC.
