1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster

I sometimes forget just how much variety there was within the 964 model run. It’s almost as if there never existed a standard car, and given that the 964 debuted with the completely new Carrera 4 we might be forgiven for thinking the standard Carrera 2 was, in fact, a special edition itself! Here we another within the wide range of 964s: a Midnight Blue Metallic 1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster, located in Pennsylvania, with only 21,500 miles on it. Aesthetically the America Roadster best distinguishes itself from the rest of the 964 Cabriolet lineup through attention to the rear, which has taken on the flared fenders of the 964 Turbo. Since Porsche never produced a Cabriolet version of the 964 Turbo the America Roadster was as close as buyers could get. Powered by the same 3.6 liter flat-six as the standard 964 Cabriolet, the America Roadster was enhanced by the use of the Turbo’s suspension and braking. All told, only 250 were built making these one of the more rare 964 variants.

The America Roadster was built to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the 1952 Porsche 356 America Roadster. The build total was just 250 cars, and, like the name suggests, for America only… This is one of the rarest 911 models ever made, that many consider this the true successor to the 1989 Speedster…It’s a factory wide body cabriolet with the turbo suspension and brakes… It’s the only wide body cabriolet ever produced in this era! This one was thoughtfully ordered with an abundance of options: Midnight Blue metallic paint with Navy soft top and interior accents, it has full hand stitched supple leather seats in Classic grey with full power, both right and left comfort width seating with embossed headrest crests, power soft-top, full leather center console with rear tray, and a full leather hand stitched dash and knee-bar. Plush German Silver-knit wool carpets in blue, leather sport steering wheel,Tiptronic 4 speed transmission, power soft-top, 17″ Cup wheels, cruise control, AM/FM/CD stereo system with Hi-Fi sound, (upgraded to modern CD) Porsche crested alloy wheels, climate control air conditioning and heat, power/heatable side mirrors, power windows, central locking with alarm, fog lights, H-5 halogen driving lights, power adjustable rear spoiler, carpeted trunk, quartz clock, heated windshield washers, headlight washers, locking anti-theft wheel device, variable intermittent wipers, power steering, ABS brakes, dual airbags, and fully tinted glass with graduated tint. This particular car even has a very tastefully done rear seat/belt upgrade in place of the luggage box. Delivered new in Pompano Beach Florida, it was dealer serviced officiously by the original owner until 2008, when we purchased and sold it with 19k.miles. The second owner continued its care the next 5 years, driving only truly special times…Accumulating about a thousand miles. This is one of 250, available today, well under Hagerty’s valuation.

Like we’ve seen with the RS America, the market for the America Roadster has accelerated at a phenomenal pace over the past year. Rare variants of the 964 simply have become some of the most sought after models in the 911 lineup and this car is no different. However, as the seller notes, the asking price here, along with current bidding of $72,100, is well below where a 21.5K mile America Roadster would be expected to sell. Why? Because it’s a Tiptronic. I’m not sure how many Tiptronic-equipped America Roadsters were produced, but it cannot have been many meaning for those who seek out these cars this would likely be one of the better available candidates given the low mileage and beautiful Midnight Blue paint. Collector value will obviously stay much lower than a manual transmission example, but there is still plenty of value to be had in these cars.
