It’s been over a decade since I last hopped behind the wheel of one, but I still remember my last encounter with a Mercedes-Benz 500E. Harmless enough though it looks, it packs a big bite. Acceleration, braking and handling were a revelation for a luxury sedan of its day, even if this car had serious sporting intentions imbued in it by Porsche. For a while, these special W124s were somewhat affordable but values have been on the climb, even for those with more than 100,000 miles on the clock. This 500E, replete with monoblocks, has 136k miles on the clock but looks to be well cared for.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500E-Class. One can’t overstate the authority with which the legendary 322hp V-8 (that’s brake horsepower) delivers. Endless reserve on top of it. Once you are up to highway speeds, you can comfortably hum along in quiet, secure in a car built by Mercedes when the engineers called the shots. Speedometer reads 136,736 miles. These motors are well capable of 300K + miles if taken care of.
Before Mercedes purchased AMG to build high performance models, they built a car with Porsche, the 500E. With a modified 5 liter engine and improvements to every system Mercedes transformed the car. Offered here is a rare, un-restored and well maintained 500E. The pictures will show minor flaws but this is the perfect car to maintain and be enjoyed as-is. A collectible that is fast, safe and fun to drive!

Without any mention of records, a thorough PPI would of course be in order before pulling the trigger on this 500E. It isn’t unfathomable for these fast W124s to pile on miles so one shouldn’t be worried too much of six figures if the car has been cared for, which many of these rare super saloons were. Not long ago you could source higher mileage 500Es for around $10,000 to $12,000, but enthusiasts have woken up to these rides. The Buy It Now price on this one is not far off from what one could expect to pay for a higher mileage 500E in good condition. While the AMG monoblocks may offend some purists, I actually like the look. The ones here are not oversized and set it apart from the crowd just a little bit more.

It’s possible that this particular car may have been serviced regularly but it’s funny how many ads mention words “well maintained” and yet no trace of service record. I guess buyer is just suppose to trust the word of the salesman. After all, why would they lie?
Having had a 92 500e- I can say that this German muscle
car was fun but I just don’t think they are worth
the money people are asking.
For 17-18k you can net a well sorted C55 AMG
which is a far better all around performer than the
500E., more durable as well.
Throttle actuator parts as well as a few other electrical
items specific to this w124 are becoming unobtanium.
My 2cents..

Having driven many AMG models, they all don’t have the raw power and the simplicity of the W124 500E.
Valuations of newer AMG models reflect that. Clean W124 500E’s will sell for more money.
I had an owner of a E63 wanting to trade his car for my 27,000 mile W124 500E. Obviously, my answer was No.
This car is suspected of having an odometer rollback. All pertinent information can be found here:

It’s horrible how cheap newer MBs interiors look:

Oh how far the fall from 1993!
It appears that current seller of this car rolled the odometer back from 250k miles to 136k miles, was called out for it on that thread, and still has the gall to list it on ebay with 136k miles. That’s outrageous. Would steer well clear.
Thanks everyone for pointing out the rollback issue. I try to visit the enthusiast boards as often as I can, so I appreciate the extra set of eyes on these things.
This car was put up for sale on eBay this week, and had the AutoCheck report as part of the auction. The report clearly showed the odometer rollback of approximately 130,000 miles. After a day or two, the auction was suddenly “pulled” by eBay. That should tell you something.
A prudent prospective buyer would be wise to steer well clear of this particular example. Photos posted at the enthusiast web site above show significant rust on the interior of the car, serious neglect, and a lack of careful maintenance (cracked rubber mirror boots and so forth).
In this listing, the car is seriously misrepresented by the seller as to its level of maintenance and condition, and the price is extremely optimistic.
