1996 Porsche 911 Turbo

Jeremy Clarkson was fond of saying that sticking a Turbo badge on a car made it better. Didn’t matter the car, if it said Turbo it was good! In this way, the 911 market agrees completely with Jeremy. An air-cooled 911 Turbo is a highly sought after commodity in any guise, and for good reason. Enhanced performance trumps almost anything but the rarest of the naturally-aspirated models and given that a Turbo had a higher cost of entry to begin with we can understand why the market for them has remained so strong. As the last of the breed the 993 Turbo has held a special place in the heart of most Porschephiles, even if its all-wheel drive system dims the ferocity and purity of its dynamics to some degree. But the fact that it is the most advanced air-cooled model and, arguably, the prettiest of all the 911 Turbos lends it credence any debate and it is sure to maintain a high place within the 911 market for many years to come. The example we see here is a Guards Red 1996 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Texas, with Tan interior and only 8,646 miles on it.

It has been rare that we’ve come across an auction for a 993 Turbo, or at least one with low mileage and in excellent condition, that is a simple reserve auction. A lot of recent auctions either have had a very high asking price or were a reserve auction that included a sky-high Buy It Now price. While it’s likely that this auction’s reserve is just as high as the prices listed in those other auctions, there is something somewhat refreshing about seeing just the bidding without the other numbers getting in the way and provoking influence. I always enjoy any of the various tans or browns as an interior choice to contrast with Guards Red as they provide an open and airy feel to the cabin and contrast well with the exterior. This one is no different. Bidding here currently sits at $140,600 and the reserve is unmet. That price would have seemed almost absurd only a year ago, but now, given the very low mileage, it actually seems low.

I keep saying this bubble will burst. I strongly advise buyers to wait. And those wheels, no.

I agree the chrome on the wheels is awful. Dont hold your breath waiting for a bubble to pop. I see a lot of very high asking price on air cooled cars but I don’t see a lot of them selling at those prices.

About six or eight months ago I sold a 96 993TT with 23k on it for $130.

There really is no way for this level of price appreciation to sustain itself, that’s just a basic principle of markets. On the other hand I don’t think you’re going to see a major about face in pricing. The market will level off, maybe even drop back and fill in a bit but the days of buying a low miles 993TT sub $100k are gone and baring global financial meltdown, wont be back.

what a crying shame…a 993TT that has not been truly enjoyed/driven….perhaps they were embarrassed to be seen with chrome rims??

I wouldn’t rule out that financial meltdown just yet….
