Many people around the world today are celebrating Boxing Day, a day that has been described as a sort of second Christmas. Traditionally this is the date when laborers would receive gifts and offerings from their employers in exchange for their service, but it has evolved into a Black Friday, with retailers passing on post-Christmas specials to consumers. This Boxing Day, why not celebrate with a sports car that has the heart of a boxer? The Porsche 993. This final year 993 Targa for sale in Texas is wearing the iconic Arena Red from the era and has covered a scant 36,000 miles since new.

1998 Porsche 993 Carrera Targa

VIN: WP0DA2993WS385112

* 1 of only 122 Examples – Last Year of the famed Porsche 993 Model
* Desirable Targa Configuration with clean CarFax
* Excellent Condition – All Original Books, Tools & Accessories

The Targa version of the 993 was introduced in model year 1996 and saw the debut of a retractable glass roof, able to sheath underneath the rear window revealing a large opening. Entirely different from the Targa’s of previous models – this was an elegant system of sliding glass with electric operation based on the chassis of a convertible model.

As 1 of just 122 examples produced, the 1998 993 Targa is among the last unique desirables of the classically designed air cooled Porsche 911s. Offered here is a beautifully shown original example in distinctive Arena Red paintwork over Cashmere Beige leather upholstery; equipped with the 285hp Varioram engine mated to a six-speed gearbox, climate and cruise control, premium audio with removable faceplate and disc changer, special 17″ two-piece alloy wheels and an elegant three-paneled sliding glass roof.

The unique roofing configuration on this 993 offers four individual driving experiences while enjoying the Porsche’s raw nature. The engine and mechanicals are suitably strong and well-maintained in this particular car, as are the electronics and motors – all components work flawlessly. Original paintwork appears glossy and clear with only minor rock chips to the nose. Accident free, a clean Carfax confirms the Porsche’s two owner history. The interior is absolutely stunning, with clean carpeting/mats, a driver’s seat showing little usage and immaculate leather surrounding.

The Carrera Targa rides with all of its original factory accessories including all manuals, books, directories and cards in leather case, both keyed remotes with return tag, unused tools and jack in roll, pristine air compressor with accessories, spare assembly and Porsche protective bumper bra. The famed 993 undoubtedly remains one of the most treasured Porsche models to date, and with the addition of a stunning glass panoramic roof to the Carrera, a unique and thrilling driver was produced. We encourage a closer inspection of this thoroughly modern 911 Targa.

The Targa tends to be the one model of the 993 lineup that tends to be overlooked, which could be attributed to their limited production and the fact that the coupe and cabriolet models are favored more by the purists and sun seekers, respectively. I’ll admit that I would rather own a hardtop 911, but the glass roof is a curious piece of engineering from the period that sought to combine the best of open-roofed motoring with all-weather practicality. Given the mileage and condition, the asking price isn’t too far off and it’s encouraging to see the seller open to offers. Considering what a new 911 costs, a mint 993 like this for much less money is the route that I would take.

This is one of my favorite Porsches, and although I have not owned a 993 Targa, I have heard nighmares about leaking Targa tops.
