2011 BMW M3 Individual

My search for a Phoenix Yellow M3 consumed years, and along the way I checked out plenty of other custom yellow options. There were plenty of Dakar Yellow E46s and E92s, but it’s always neat to see something a little bit different. Named after a desert in Chile, the color was originally launched on the Z4 – but, of course, that didn’t stop a few imaginative souls from specifying BMW Individual to paint their pride in joy in the orange-yellow tone. It’s no small feat to do so, so while you’re there you might as well tick every option box, right? The results on this M3 are pretty interesting; from a $55,900 base price, the original buyer selected no less than $20,000 worth of options. Of particular interest to me (outside, of course, from the exterior color) is that they also had the imagination to order something other than black inside. Does it work?

Though I’ve certainly spent a lot of time trying to convince people that now is the time to buy E36s or E46s as the market goes up, watching the market fall on pristine E9xs is certainly tempting. There was more than one I came across in my search that gave me pause – yes, it’s double the money of an E46, but it’s a lot newer and faster, too, and condition of these cars is in aggregate much better as they’ve had fewer owners and miles. Generally, they’ve also had fewer modifications, too – but that’s not the case here, as several tack-ons have been adorned on this E90. But there’s still a lot to like. First off, I applaud the choice of sedan, as most of the Individual models I’ve seen are coupes. Second, it’s a very well equipped car and you’re not likely to see another similarly specified. Third, the S65 coupled to the DCT might not be what everyone wants, but that transmission and engine combination work admittedly much better than the earlier SMG setup. And lastly, at $43,900, it’s really not unreasonably priced. Sell the black wheels and re-equip the original ZCP Competition Package BBSs, along with taking off the splitter and a rear spoiler, and this is a really tasteful and unique example of a well priced and excellent condition E90 in my eyes.

  1. Love the seats, love the striping inside the grill. Companies need to stop with the carbon trim inside, it’s been done by Audi since the early 90s and they are just copying that aesthetic 25 years too late. Of course the blaque wheels are hideous. Don’t like the paint.

  2. Too bad they also checked the A/T (DCT) box.
