2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe

We feature the 996TT pretty frequently. Even as prices have risen they remain fantastic performers for the money and definitely one of the best performance values you can find, especially when you find one with the factory X50 package raising those performance heights even higher. I wouldn’t say most of those we feature come in the best colors though. There’s the odd Speed Yellow or Guards Red Turbo and, of course, there was the very rare Signal Green Turbo S, but most are in the standard shades of gray and silver that seemingly dominated the 996 line.

This one clearly is an exception. Here is a Cobalt Blue Metallic 2003 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, located in Georgia, with a Graphite Grey leather interior and 64,008 miles on it. Cobalt Blue was a standard color for the 996 so I have no idea why we don’t see more of them, but for some reason it seems we don’t. That makes this one a particularly pleasant find.

1984 Mercedes-Benz 300SD


The last few W126 Mercedes-Benz I looked have fell more towards the collector car status in this 1987 300SDL with an outstanding interior and this nearly perfect 1987 560SEL. Today’s W126, a 1984 300SD for sale in California, isn’t one of those cream puff cars but it is far from a beaten up example either. This OM617 S-Class has just enough miles where you don’t feel bad about piling on some more but not too many where you feel like an engine overhaul is around the corner. Finished in Lapis Blue with gray leather this 300SD could be the perfect daily driver. What do you think?

Tuner Tuesday GCFSB Alumnus: 2002 Ruf Volkswagen Beetle Turbo S Concept

Update 2/16/18: After showing as sold in November for $14,900, the mega-cool Ruf Bug is back again for the same $14,900 ask.

It’s back!

This is a car which has haunted these pages since we first began writing up German cars, if you can believe it. Originally, Aaron wrote this car up nearly 6 years ago to the day – November 8, 2011. Back then, the seller was asking an incredibly steep $60,000. Three years later in 2014, Paul spotted it again and revisited the concept. It was then up for sale for a scarcely more reasonable $50,000. In both cases, it was really hard to justify the substantial premium even if it was a neat looking car.

Fast forward to today, and we’re finally getting somewhere. Although the car appears to have changed little since 2014, the asking price is now $14,900. Mileage is far below average at only 51,722 and condition generally looks very good. It has only accrued 10,000 miles in the last three years. Although this car lacks true RUF credentials, the general concept pulls together pretty well and the execution looks nice. Is this the one to have? It’s certainly a lot more compelling than a standard Beetle in many ways and has big dollar mods, but do those mods justify a $11,000 premium over a standard Turbo S?

Two Visions of the Future: 1963 BMW 700LS and 1990 BMW Z1

Update 1/30/19: The 700LS remains available on eBay here and via the seller’s site, now for only $12,900.

Update 6/1/18 – the BMW 700LS has dropped a further $2,000 in ask to $19,500.

Update 2/6/18 – Unsurprisingly, the 700LS remains available on reserve auction (it is $21,900 on their site)

Normally, our dual posts have two comparable cars to consider. But while typically that manifests itself in one model, one price point or one performance group, today it’s something very different.

Although both of today’s cars come from one marque – BMW – there is literally and figuratively a huge chasm of development between them. There’s also a vast gulf between performance, desirability and price. Yet each reflected the time point in which it was made; the austere 1960s, emerging from the fog of war into a bustling economy when average Germans could for the first time contemplate automobile ownership, and the exotic 1980s, with its new computer designs and technology rapidly forcing car designs forward. For the company, each car represented the future in many ways even if the results and their impact was so vastly different.

Signal Yellow 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4

I had one thought when I first saw this 2016 Porsche Cayman GT4: “Please let it be Signal Yellow.” From the thumbnail it looked like it might be, but lighting and small pictures can deceive and don’t always yield what appears at first glance.

It is Signal Yellow.

Like many of Porsche’s vintage colors Signal Yellow is a long time favorite and one of the colors that always will attract my notice. Though it doesn’t always work as well on modern Porsches as it did on the early models on which it debuted. A while back I featured a Signal Yellow GT3 and while the color looked great on that car, it just wasn’t quite as great as on an early 911. It’s the lack of contrasts. Those early cars had chromes and blacks on various exterior pieces that complemented well that bright yellow paint. The GT4 is similar to the GT3 in that regard, but the color still looks really good and its brightness combines well with the spirit of the machine to produce a phenomenal result.
