2021 Volkswagen Arteon SEL Premium R-Line

It isn’t too often that we get to introduce a totally new car on these pages, but welcome to our first Arteon. The Arteon is the follow-up to the unusually successful Passat CC; essentially, a Passat that Volkswagen attempted to make look like a cross between a Chrysler LHS and a Mercedes-Benz CLS. They were always a bit oddly proportioned in my eyes, though they had some pretty exciting features – you could, for example, get an all-wheel-drive one hooked to the VR6. Still, the design was dated by the end of the twentyteens, and in 2019 they apparently sold just 59 CCs in the US.

The replacement arrived just in time for COVID, but it was a lot more appealing. The Arteon ditched the trunk and went for a budget-Audi A7 look, with a hatch, fresh styling, and a decidedly upscale interior. Unfortunately, that also meant an upscale pricetag. The Arteon starts today at just over $40,000 – which doesn’t sound horrible until you see the broadly similar Passat retailing in the low 20s – or it did, at least, until the Passat died an untimely death in the US market this year, which leaves us with just the Arteon.

It’s available in three configurations, ranging from the front-drive SE R-Line to what we see here – the range-topping SEL Premium R-Line, which is all-wheel drive and with a spec sheet rivaling the best cars out there. Run to a dealer and you’re looking at $50,000 for one. But if you accept a few miles, you can knock a bunch off that price:

1978 Volkswagen Scirocco

Some cars you just can’t forget. The first-generation Scirocco is one of my favorite designs, but they’re so infrequently seen today that it’s easy to try to keep a mental map of the ones that pop up for sale. In the case of today’s car, though, that was assisted by the color. There were no British Racing Green Sciroccos that left the factory, but I’ve looked at one – more than once – and so when this car popped up for sale, I was sure I’d seen it before. I first looked at this car in February 2015, and it appeared again in March of the same year. Then, with A1 Avus wheels on it, it turned up on Bring a Trailer in 2017. The fourth time’s the charm?

2016 BMW M4 Convertible Individual

When the F8x BMW M3 and M4 launched, they were loud, proud, and…well, large. Park an M4 next to an original M3, and you can nearly hide the entire older model behind the silhouette of the new one. But when the G80 was launched recently, well…suddenly meet the new boss had me looking at the old boss in a new light. And the S55 is still good for 425 horsepower – and it’ll still rip your face off. 0-60 is gone in 4 seconds and it’ll demolish the older generations in a straight line. But if performance isn’t enough for you to stand apart from the crowd, let’s check out this Individual Fire Orange M4 convertible:

2005 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

While I’ve always found the McLaren SLR an intriguing car, it’s never been a car that I fully understood. Following in the footsteps of the “Holy Grail” of supercars, the F1, the SLR just didn’t seem really that impressive in any way. Yes, it was fast. Yes, it sounded like a radial-engined airplane in full attack mode. Yes, the brakes caught on fire when it went too fast. But compared to the howling, scalded cat Carrera GT, the SLR just seemed a bit too main-stream. That was further hampered Mercedes-Benz itself when it offered supercharged versions of the SLs – which looked mostly like the SLR, had a nifty folding roof, offered most of the performance and cost a whole lot less.

Today, these ex-supercars maintain the trend; while the Carrera GTs head into the millions, it’s possible to get a McLaren for less than half that amount. To me, they’re the Nico Rosberg of supercars; undoubtedly talented, but unfortunately presented alongside someone with…well, more talent.

Double Take: 1985 Audi 4000S

While I’m a big fan of the Audi B2 chassis, I don’t spend much time looking at or for the low man on the totem pole – the 4000S. Audi’s badging in the post-facelift B2 was odd, as there was no model below the “S” offered here – so the 4000S was the base model. Although these were the least powerful B2s on offer, in manual form they could just about keep up with the Coupe GT and 4000 quattro because they were also the lightest of the chassis offered. Power came from a 1.8 inline-4 borrowed from the GTI and GLI Volkswagens, but it was mounted longitudinally like all B2 motors. Even though they were down on power to the 5s, the inline-4 also had 20% less motor hanging out front, making them fairly nimble. Like their 5-cylinder GT brethren, you had a choice between a 5-speed manual or the venerable 3-speed automatic that appeared in everything from the Vanagon to the Porsche 944. Visually the wheels looked the same as the bigger-brother GT and quattro, but they were actually a different version of the R8 hiding smaller brakes. They were also the cheapest Audi you could buy in the 1980s. Though we often look at 4000 quattros, the reality is that about 75% or more of any given model year’s sales were front drivers. 1987 saw 9,043 out of 11,972 sold in this configuration. These appeared to be bought primarily by older women who wanted a more refined sedan but weren’t ready to buy the W201 Mercedes-Benz or E30 BMW. Much more often than their all-wheel drive counterparts, or even the GT, clean examples of the prolific 4000S pop up for sale. To prove my point, there are no less than two on offer this week!
