2020 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4

Everyone wants options. Not the options in terms of life, I’m talking about optional equipment for cars. “Fully loaded!” “Every option!” I’m sure you’ve seen those phrases throw around a million times when looking at cars when the reality of it is it’s configured like the majority of them for sale. Naturally, Porsche takes this to another level by offering a boat load of options that you didn’t even know were possible and then ever went a step further by offering their special customers whatever they wanted, as long as they paid an eye-watering amount of money.

But what if you ordered a car with no options? Crazy. Who would go into a Porsche dealer and specifically order a car with nothing? Just standard equipment and that’s it. Well, that seems to be what happened with this new 718 Cayman GT4.

1982 Porsche 924

Increasingly as some of our childhood (or, adulthood) heroes get priced out of sensibility for weekend warrior on a budget status, there are still some bastions of hope for the shoestring enthusiast. One of the best must undoubtedly be the underrated Porsche 924. As Sciroccos, GTIs, 944 Turbos, Quattros and the like take off in value, here lies a plethora of well-cared for, well-built and fun-to-drive cars that have good parts accessibility, reasonable repair costs and surprising amounts of practicality. Sure, it’s ‘just’ a 924, and Porschephiles will probably poo-poo your choice. So, too, will most of the rest of the automotive world. Their loss is your gain. Try as they might, outside of some very special 924 Carreras, these models that helped to keep Porsche afloat in the 1970s and 1980s still haven’t caught on with collectors.

So here’s a late ‘early’ 924; the clean design that kept the lights on at Porsche. Certainly it’s worth a look?

Fail Friday: 1970 Porsche 914

Welcome back to Fail Friday, where we try to explain the sometimes unexplainable. Today I’m trying to decipher why someone took a seemingly nice Porsche 914 and turned it into this “thing.” It looks like someone grafted on a giant nose to the front end of the car as well as added some side support up from the rear of the car to the Targa bar. Now what was once a fairly short and squared off car is a long, swoopy one. Inside, it doesn’t get much better as they went a little crazy with the diamond stitching as well as added some custom orange door panels. The price? Thankfully it isn’t as crazy as this car.

1979 Porsche 911SC

In terms of bang for your buck in the air-cooled Porsche world, the 911SC surely is your best bet. You can get them in any shape or size, and thankfully they made a ton of them so you can pick up one up for much less the the 964, 993, or long-hood cars. Naturally that leads to owners not afraid to modify them in a myriad of ways and/or treat them not like investments that need to be babied and preserved the entire time. This is what we have today in this 1979 911SC that is fitted with a 3.2-liter, some exhaust work, and different seats. Its also been painted once, but still has some bump and bruises that make it a less than perfect example.

1999 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe “GT3RS”

If you haven’t noticed, prices of the 996 GT3 have been on the rise over the past few years, and consequently, it’s no longer the budget Porsche special that it once was. But Porsches being Porsches, there are of course options! Probably smartest if you like the GT3 look but don’t have the GT3 budget is an Aerokitted 996, like the one I looked at in July:

2000 Porsche 911 Carrera 4

At about a quarter the cost of a real GT3, you’re getting a lot more than 25% of the experience. However, there are also homebrew options, too, and this particular C4 coupe went a step further. Or perhaps a step too far. Or a few miles too far. You decide:
