While ostensibly the S4 Avant was the top-trump in the A4 lineup for both the B6 and B7 series, there were two limited models which each have found a niche in the marketplace of people who might desire them even more than the bellowing V8 beast. While performance on the turbocharged models was much more sedate than the S4 out of the box, the ability to tune these cars up without the impending doom threat of the chain-failure-prone BBK 4.2 means there are a bunch of individuals specifically seeking out the early Ultra Sport or later S-Line Titanium Package models. The S-Line package was a pretty big step up in terms of price over the regular A4 Avant. With the 6-speed tiptronic, an Avant stickered at about $32,500. Add metallic paint like the Quartz Gray Metallic seen here, and it was another $475. But option WQB was more – a lot more. At $4,400, the S-Line package did give you a bunch of items – Glass Sunroof (w/Power, Tilt, Slide, “PreSelect”), Leather Seating Surfaces, 1BE Sport Suspension, 18″ 5-arm wheels, and unique S-Line badges, steering wheel, entry plate, and bumper covers, along with brushed aluminum trim and special tri-color Audi Sport stitching. Add another $500 to the mix, and you’d get the Titanium Package designed by quattro GmbH. That included 18-inch 15-spoke Titanium-painted Ronal wheels, polished black front grill surround, a black headliner and Piano Black beltline trim, and blackened side window and roof rail trim. These cars only came with Ebony interior. This example also has heated seats and the PPX Convenience Package, which included HomeLink, rain and light sensors, auto-dim rear and outside mirrors with electric folding and bi-Xenon headlights, along with a trip computer. If you’ve been doing the math, that means that out the door this A4 cost a tick over $40,000 with no other fees. Mileage is below average and condition is above average. The color combination isn’t the most daring, but it generally looks nice. The Tiptronic will be a sore point for most enthusiasts, and so too will the $12,900 asking price. That money will get you into the much more punchy S4 Avant if you look in the right place, but these S-Line Titaniums are one of the more highly sought models…right up there with….

I bought this car 3 years ago from a boutique car dealer in Laguna Canyon CA. It was a regular customers commuter car. Pampered and always taken care of. I have a folder with over 40,000$

This car. I’ve kept up the folder since I’ve had it. When I Bought the car I had it wrapped in an army green wrap. the paint was perfect silver. There’s a few nicks and cuts in the wrap and it’s got some wear and tear but it’s held up nicely. I put the wrap on purely for preventative measure not for aesthetics. But it looks cool..Underneath is a perfect silver paint job with hardly a Blemish. It’s a rare 6-Speed. 1.8 Turbo as my Mechanic Graham from G-Imports in Hermosa Beach would say is bullet proof. Call him About the car he’ll tell you all about it. It’s got 195k miles and drives like a dream. Sunroof slides nice. Just had new tires put on 5 months ago. 18″ alloys. Less than 4K miles since then. Moonroof , all power, winter package, heated seats. 6 CD player. Runs perfect. Great gas mileage. Great driving car no mechanical problems .

Perhaps the only non-S4 model more highly sought than the 2.0T shown above is the even more elusive 2005 Ultra Sport package, especially in Avant and 6-speed manual form. All the right boxes are ticked here, and that was certainly so when the car was originally ordered. The base model was $29,150, plus again the Light Silver Metallic added $450. The Ultra Sport package came in at $3,000 and gave you again 18″ quattro GmbH wheels with summer tires, 1BE sport suspension, aluminum trim, the Votex body kit front and rear with door blades, and a perforated leather steering wheel. A further $2,000 was spent on the Premium Package which got you (no surprise) a sunroof, leather power seats, Homelink and a trip computer. The original buyer also selected the Premium Audio Package for $1,000 which got you Bose and satellite radio, another $950 for the bi-Xenon headlight package with auto-dim mirror and light sensors, plus $650 for the Cold Weather Package which got you heated seats and the ski bag. The total was a barely-more affordable $38,000 out the door.

We don’t get to see much in terms of condition on the 2005, but it’s claimed to be very good under the wrap. With 195,000 miles, it’s far from a spring chicken, but unlike the 2007 it comes with a boatload of receipts which hopefully included a timing belt change around 180,000 miles. The big benefit here is that you’re buying from an individual rather than a dealer. That, and the transmission. With the 6-speed manual, I’d bet there are a lot of people willing to overlook the ugly wrap and the quite high mileage. Yet the car has a reserve set which, at least this time, appears that it won’t be met.

Which is the one to get? That depends on your priorities. The Titanium Package in Avant form is as good as the B7 looked to me, but the Quartz wouldn’t be my preference for color and despite the low mileage, the Tiptronic wouldn’t be either. The B6 looks like the winner here to me, with what should be a much lower entry price – just prepare yourself for some possible maintenance catch-up.
