In my journey through the world of green 911s I haven’t forgotten about those less rare cars and of course, one of my favorites, the 911SC. I’ve seen a lot of SCs lately, especially Targas, actually selling. Much of that is because they’re now coming up with much more reasonable prices, yet still presenting in good condition. Granted, they are definitely of the ‘driver’ quality but that’s ok and there will always be a place for such cars. Nearly everyone who writes here and reads these pages came to their love of automobiles from the exhilaration that comes from driving them. It isn’t always easy to find air-cooled 911s for prices that don’t make you cringe every time you leave the garage, but they do exist. Now that I’ve said all of those hopeful things I’m going to feature this 911SC, which is priced a little higher (sorry!), but given how good it looks still represents a little bit of a step back in the market. We’ll have to see where bidding takes it and I suspect its ultimate selling price will be below this ask. Anyway let’s get to the car: here we have a Copper Bronze Metallic 1978 Porsche 911SC Targa, located in North Carolina, with Cork interior and 36,280 miles on it.

Here at GCFSB, we feature a lot of cars. Since I started writing for this site, I’ve composed some 1,773 articles, a fair amount of which cover more than one car. So it would be easy to forget that you’d already seen a car. That would especially be the case if a fair amount of time had passed since you last saw it and it was a relatively plain-jane looking model.
Enter this 1989 535i in Cirrus Blue Metallic. Outside of Hartge wheels, it’s pretty unassuming. That is, except for the “Dinan” badge on the left side of the trunk.
It’s that Dinan badge which unlocks a world of performance that otherwise is the domain of M models, and this sleeper package with low reported miles seems to be a pretty compelling alternative. Immediately, I recognized this car but knew it had been a bit since I last saw it. Since it was originally featured in March of 2014, very little has changed – the seller utilized the same photos and much of the same description from the original ad, disappointingly. He reports about 500 more miles in two and a half years, and unsurprisingly the price has dropped little. The auction is no reserve with an $11,250 starting bid – only about $750 less than the original ask. As the market on E34s really hasn’t improved greatly since then outside of some exceptional M5s, I’d wager this automatic 535i – even with the Dinan provenance – will have trouble this time around, too.

1 CommentSo, I thought I was done with green cars for a while, but there are a couple more that simply are too good to pass by. In truth, this Signal Green 2005 Porsche 911 Turbo S is the car that began my foray into the classifieds and lead me to most of the other green Porsches I featured last week. Andrew had seen a post on Instagram suggesting that this car would be put up for sale. It took a while to pop up, and in the meantime the various others came to my attention. But here it is indeed for sale. A couple weeks back I featured a X50-equipped 996TT with only 4K miles on it and wondered about the collector value and potential of these cars. The premium being asked for that very low mileage seemed reasonable, but of course it’s only reasonable if it continues to command such a premium. This Turbo S takes all of the collector factors to the next level; I’m not sure if any other 996TT (assuming we ignore the subjectivities surrounding exterior color) possesses a better combination of attributes to help it stand out as this one.

2 CommentsIt’s funny how priorities change. A decade ago, I would not have given a second look to a 528e. Growing up with a E28 M5 in the garage created both an appreciation for the E28 and the dichotomous dismissal of lower range vehicles. Sure, the M5-look 535is was cool, and alongside the M5 we even had a very nice ’85 535i that was a pretty good driver. But below that? No, I seldom gave the 533i, 528e or even 524td a second look on the road. Today, though? Even if it’s not a performance car by most standards, a survivor 528e is certainly worth a second look:

What I thought was a normal taxi cab spec W124 diesel turned out to be an ambulance — at least what used to be an ambulance. This 1989 250D underwent a conversion from Binz, a specialty company in Germany that has been converting Mercedes into limousines, ambulances, fire trucks, hearses and everything else for over 75 years.
