1960 Porsche 356B Super 90 Cabriolet

I think I understand the appeal of nostalgia. It’s the appeal of something we perceive as less complex, freer, or rooted in the familiar. In that regard our own memories are most important and it is the connections between past and present events that creates the joy we derive from such experiences. On the second-hand car market, nostalgia also plays an important role in solidifying and elevating the values of particular models. Nostalgia isn’t the only influential player in those market movements, but it definitely has its role. So when I look at the Porsche 356 I think I can understand part of the reason for their success; the reason they have become six-figure cars even when by any modern performance and refinement standard they will fall well short. Like many models the 356 has its own fans that in many ways are distinct from 911 fans or fans of Porsche’s various front-engined GTs. I am very much a 911 fan, yet, even though these cars are quite a bit older than I am, I can easily see the appeal of a relaxed drive in the sun and the wind with very little standing between your inputs as the driver and the responses of the car. With simplicity and lightness comes joy. So I think I understand the appeal of nostalgia. Here we have a restored Slate Gray 1960 Porsche 356B Super 90 Cabriolet, located in Miami, with Black interior.

1995 Audi RS2 Avant

If yesterday’s low mileage S6 Avant wasn’t enough fast wagon love for you North American fans, I have just the cure. It’s easy to forget that our neighbors in the Great White North have managed to enjoy European model legal status for a full decade more than that U.S. fans; thus, it’s not abnormal to see some wild Euro cars come up for sale. Kijiji is nearly as much of a tease as Ebay.de, and today is no exception as a rare RS Blue 1995 RS2 Avant with lower miles has popped up for sale:

1984 Porsche 930 Coupe

With time many things can be mended. So just because a car was not available in our market during its years of production doesn’t mean that those same cars will never be available. Such is the case with the Porsche 930, which took a hiatus from US shores beginning in 1980 only to return in 1986. For fans of Porsche’s top model those years must have seemed an eternity. All we had were posters and our imagination. European owners suffered no such issues and by 1984 the 930 was sending 330 hp to those wide rear tires, making for pulse-quickening performance that required constant attention and offered numerous rewards for those capable of exploiting its massive performance potential. RoW cars possess a certain allure to many buyers as they possess a uniqueness that is difficult to capture and that allure always is enhanced when the car in question was not available in the US market. Thankfully the days of the 930’s absence have passed and those European models now can be found Stateside along with many examples of the original US market cars. Here we have one such European example: a Guards Red 1984 Porsche 930 Coupe, located in New York, with just 34,721 miles on it.

1981 Volkswagen Rabbit Pickup Diesel

1043960-0-large
Instead of Friday Fail, today we’ve got Sunday Smokers. I’m not sure what kind of dust is floating around the Dusty Old Cars warehouse, but I think it might be crack. I love Rabbit Pickups – not only was my first car one, but they’re precisely the kind of European oddity that we rarely get in the US but, for some magical reason, were blessed with for a few years in the early 80s. Practical and putting a heavy dose of fun in funky, they even came with a diesel! Today’s example is one of those oil-burners, wears a fresh coat of baby blue paint, and – despite 187k miles – the engine bay looks a great. However, a little closer look reveals some big question marks (like any description at all?) and possible rust spots that were just painted over. Even if it is just cosmetic and the truck were perfect, their asking price of $14,950 (down from $17,899, lucky you!) is top dollar for perfectly restored, low-mile, and modified Caddys. I realize New Hampshire is all about Live Free or Die, but with the amount of drugs these guys are doing, it doesn’t sound like they’ll be living free much longer.

1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Syncro Hightop EJ22 Swap

$_57 (6)
Here’s one of the best deals on a Syncro camper we’ve seen in a while (if not ever!) and it comes with a well-done Subaru boxer swap. These High Top campers are much more rare than their pop-top brethren, but it’s a pretty awesome look with more 4-season capability. Though listed with 290k miles, the engine was put in 20k miles ago and had a decent refresh at the time along with a rebuilt transmission. Clearly owned by a well-informed and diligent Vanagon enthusiast, this Syncro camper is going for about half of where most start. It’s caveat emptor with any swap, high-mileage car, or 80s Volkswagen in general, but anyone looking at this van should have a healthy level of project-excitement and an appreciation of getting this much Vanagon for a reasonable price.
