Back when I bought my first Audi, there were two five doors available in the US; the A6 Avant and the S6 Avant. Other markets had more options, its true, but it’s also not like the cup overfloweth. Today? The story has changed. Right now, Audi markets 15 different five door models. FIFTEEN. How is that possible? Well, you’ve got seemingly infinite variants of just a few chassis underpinnings, that’s how. There’s the Q3, Q5, the ‘slinkier’ Q5 Sportback, then the S versions of both of those, the Q7 and SQ7, the Q8, SQ8, and RS Q8, the e-tron, the e-tron Sportback, both A4 and A6 allroads, and finally, the RS6 Avant. Wow, how times have changed!
Today I’m going to look at two of Audi’s most expensive products outside of the R8. Both share a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, an 8-speed automatic, around 600 horsepower, sub-4-second 0-60 times, ‘track-tuned’ ability, and $110,000 plus starting prices. But what if you just can’t wait to get down to your dealership?

Honestly what attracted me here was Dragon Orange Metallic. Though it’s not an Audi Exclusive shade, it’s still pretty wild looking. This one also had the 23″ optional wheels, carbon-ceramic brakes, all the packages…you get the idea. It also has paint protection film and 23″ ugly wheels thrown in for good measure. The price? Getting on for $170,000. Wow. And, strange, because when click all the options on Audi’s configuration tool, I only come up with $149,000. Even factoring in for $15,000 or so worth of wheels and extras, this one is still overpriced by several thousand dollars. Plus…$170,000 for an Audi SUV? Moving on.

Yup, it was the color again. Navarra Blue Metallic sure looks great. And at a $30,000 discount over the RS Q8, I already like it more – if for some reason my vast preference for the wagon over the “SUV” craze wasn’t enough. This one has some nice options too, though I admit I really like the standard wheels much more than the optional Lizzie Borden-inspired design shown here. Regardless, similarly this one is overpriced. Tick the option boxes over at Audi and I come up with ~$125,000 for what’s shown, so that’s a pretty expensive exhaust system to make up for the difference. Still, a friend of mine just bought one of these and waited many months for it to arrive; so I suppose if today has to be the day you want to drive one and you’d like some color other than black or gray, this one might be worth a slight premium. Of the two, it’s the one I’d buy each and every time.

Personally have a hard time justifying buying either new. When these hit the used car market though I’m so intrigued.
That RSQ8 is just fantastic! I cannot warm up to the RS6 though–the wheels are just stupidly big and make the car look dumb.
You’d be facing what… something like $4000/month depreciation for the first year on that orange thing?
I would definitely wait for the inevitable depreciation… for the price of the RSQ8, you are close enough to a Lambo URUS…if you already spending big money for an SUV…unless, for some reason 170K is the most you can spend.
Agree with everyone, no way do you buy one of these new unless you have money to burn. In a couple of years they will be available for well under $100k as CPO vehicles. I agree that the RS6 styling and wheels are definitely overdone. It looks much better with the base wheels.
