By now, Porsche has become pretty well known for producing commemorative edition models to celebrate a variety of milestones. Mostly they are differentiated by unique interior and exterior combinations and built in pretty low production numbers. The one we see here, a 1975 Porsche 911S 25th Anniversary Edition is, I believe, the first commemorative edition Porsche produced, and it’s the first time I’ve come across one. First, we must distinguish this from the 25th Anniversary 911, which was produced in 1989 as a means to commemorate 25 years of 911 production. Those were available as a Coupe, Targa, or Cabriolet, and came with either a Satin Black Metallic or, more commonly, Silver Metallic exterior and Silk Grey leather interior, along with a host of interior upgrades. The model we have here, on the other hand, was to commemorate 25 years of Porsche production in general. 1063 were produced as either Coupe or Targa and each came with a Diamond Silver Metallic exterior and Blue tweed interior. Mechanically there were no changes from the standard 911 as they featured a 2.7 liter flat-six delivering 165 hp through a 5-speed manual transmission.
For as long lived as the R107 SL and C107 SLC were, Mercedes-Benz never offered these roadsters and coupes in six-cylinder form in the US market. That’s rather curious, given the fuel crunch that was in full swing during this cars production run. Plenty of private importers went and had a go, bringing the 280SL and SLC into the before legislators stepped in and curbed gray market imports. Now that all R107 and C107 models are eligible for import as they are more than 25 years old, one can take their pick from any number of six-cylinder SLs and SLCs out there for sale abroad. Luckily, this 280SLC for sale in New Jersey is already here, offering the classic Mercedes buyer something a bit different than your usual large-bumpered, sealed beam headlamp adorned SLC.
The current 911 Turbo is a pretty luxurious car. Fast as just about anything, but still quite luxurious and refined. The same goes for pretty much any 911 and most modern cars in general now come with a standard of luxury that far outstrips their classic counterparts. In that regard, it is unsurprising that many classic performance cars are so prized today. They aren’t prized so much for their performance since nearly any modern machine easily will outperform them, but rather for their feel and connectedness between driver and machine. In many ways it’s a nostalgic longing for simplicity, but there is a fair bit of truth to the disconnection created by the technological sophistication found in any modern car. Nostalgia can make a classic car VERY expensive. For our perusal here is just such a car: a 1975 Porsche 930. MY 1975 marked the debut of the turbocharged 911 and even though they stood as the top-of-the-line 911 of their day, relative to today’s machines they remain an austere and simple performance machine. Only 260 hp, but also only around 2600 lbs to move around. For those looking for the purest and most original expression of the iconic 911 Turbo these are the place to start.
There is a certain timeless quality to the design of a vintage Mercedes that few marques are capable of replicating. Many of those models offered some of the highest levels of luxury and refinement on the market during their time and through their technological innovations they performed like much more modern vehicles on the road. The W114 sometimes gets lost in the MB catalog, but as the first post-war Mercedes built on an all-new chassis they remain important cars from their period. Between the W114 and, its counter-part, the W115 these cars offered a wide variety of engine choices, whether petrol or diesel, in either a sedan or coupe body. The 1975 Mercedes Benz 280C we see here, located in North Carolina, came with a 2.8 liter inline-six mated to a 4-speed automatic transmission and is reputed to be one of the most original condition examples of its kind available in the US.

The 2002 would also break new ground, becoming the first European turbocharged production car with the 2002 Turbo. With 170 horsepower and flared fenders, this car was all business and proved to be a popular template for tuners.
