1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster

High mileage examples of collectible models represent their own particular breed on the car market, and that’s especially the case when looking at a quickly growing market with relatively high prices. We’ve seen the market for 964 variants accelerate at a rate greater than that of many other 911 models and here we have another of those low-production models that seems destined to have a strong impact on the market. The difference here, though, is that this car has nearly 140K miles on it. Here we have a Silver 1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster, located in North Carolina. Known elsewhere as the Carrera 2 Cabriolet Turbo Look, the America Roadster dispensed with certain luxuries while taking on the appearance and braking of the 911 Turbo, for which a Cabriolet was not available on the 964.

1992 Porsche 911 Turbo

The Porsche 964 Turbo is identified by a lot of 911 purists as the last of the real 911 Turbos. When the 993 based Turbo arrived, all-wheel drive entered the equation and a bit of the challenge (or threat, depending on who you talk to) was taken out of the driving experience. The 964 Turbo isn’t a car you’d expect to find in a particularly feminine color. But that’s just what we have here with this 3.6 Turbo for sale in the UK painted in the striking shade of Rubystone. This is one of the 1990s Porsche colors I’ve always loved. Question is, are you male readers out there comfortable enough in your masculinity to be seen in a sports car like this?

Tuner Tuesday: 1992 Volkswagen Corrado SLC Turbo

Since new, the Volkswagen Corrado has been the object of desire of many a VW enthusiast – each with a long list of modifications that they’d perform. When the price began to drop on used examples, those dreams started turning to reality and a few years on, we now regularly see these modified Corrados pop up for sale. Some of them are really done well even if a bit over the top like the supercharged 1992 I wrote up last Spring; others are intriguing but probably would be more valuable if they had remained stock such as the 1992 I looked at last Fall. Nevertheless, in the world of tuned Volkswagens there don’t seem to be any more proud owners of these modified sport coupes and another tuned example – this time turbocharged – has popped up for sale:

1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster

I sometimes forget just how much variety there was within the 964 model run. It’s almost as if there never existed a standard car, and given that the 964 debuted with the completely new Carrera 4 we might be forgiven for thinking the standard Carrera 2 was, in fact, a special edition itself! Here we another within the wide range of 964s: a Midnight Blue Metallic 1992 Porsche 911 America Roadster, located in Pennsylvania, with only 21,500 miles on it. Aesthetically the America Roadster best distinguishes itself from the rest of the 964 Cabriolet lineup through attention to the rear, which has taken on the flared fenders of the 964 Turbo. Since Porsche never produced a Cabriolet version of the 964 Turbo the America Roadster was as close as buyers could get. Powered by the same 3.6 liter flat-six as the standard 964 Cabriolet, the America Roadster was enhanced by the use of the Turbo’s suspension and braking. All told, only 250 were built making these one of the more rare 964 variants.

1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E

The Mercedes-Benz 500E to me, in many ways, is the ultimate Mercedes-Benz. It embodied everything that made this brand great over the years. Power, unflappable composure and durability in one discreet package. Sure, later AMG badged Benzes eclipsed it in horsepower, but there’s something special about these cars that the new AMG models don’t have. Perhaps it’s the connection with Porsche, the bespoke four-place interior or the flared fenders that captivate the mind. Whatever the attraction may be, this 500E is a rare sight on the roads of my ancestral home in Northern Portugal, in no small part that vehicles with larger engine sizes are taxed at a greater rate.
