Coupe Week 10K Friday: CL600 v. 840Ci v. Corrado SLC v. TT quattro

Time for another 10K Friday roundup, and this time I’m focusing on Coupe Week for the theme. That results in a diverse selection to choose from; from a turbocharged 1.8 inline four right through a twin-turbo V12, we have front drive, all-wheel drive and two rear-drivers. Three are automatics with one manual and ten years separate the oldest to newest; yet these are all two-door cars that fit into the $10,000 budget price range. I wanted also to include a Porsche, but wanted to cover models that we hadn’t seen in other posts and the closest I could get in a 911 was in the mid-teens, so we’re down to four choices. Who wins this crazy competition?

Coupe Week: 1993 BMW 850i

Though they’ve spent the last decade or so sitting unused in the back of the enthusiast dream garage, BMW’s E31 8-series has seen a resurgence in interest and appreciation recently. As the most range-topping coupe BMW’s produced, it took the shark-nose look into the techno era and stands out as an impressively clean design in the face of today’s luxury rhinoceri. This example spent its first 22 years with a single owner in California and has just crossed the 100k mark. It’s no show-stopping 850CSi, but that very fact helps it become one of the cheapest ways to get behind a V12 in the world. Well cared for and showing normal signs of age, it’s sweet example of BMW’s megacoupe that is quickly becoming collectible.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E 2.8

We’ve been featuring some high-end metal here on GCFSB this week. It’s always nice to dream but ever the practical one, I’m always on the lookout for a good buy. A car like this 1993 Mercedes-Benz 300E 2.8 for sale in Georgia appeals to my sensible side. We just saw a 1991 300E 4Matic with 71k miles sell for $4,250. Some of us may not want to take on the hassles that come with extra axles, so this rear-drive 300E 2.8 with just over 60,000 miles would be a good choice.

1993 Mercedes-Benz 500SEL

The W140 Mercedes-Benz S-class was a victim of its own times, debuting at the Geneva Motor Show in 1991 under the cloud of an economic downturn. Such a big and brash luxury sedan seemed out of step with the times and if that wasn’t bad enough, this car had to follow in the footsteps of the beloved W126 S-class. You still see a good number of W126 models roaming the roads but the W140s are few and far between these days. The W140 chassis would live on in the form of the recently discontinued Maybach 57 and 62, which would help to recoup some of the $1 billion USD spent on development. This 1993 500SEL for sale in Illinois is not the flagship model, but many would no doubt prefer the lower running costs of the V8 versus its V12 sibling.

1993 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6

It isn’t very often that I come across a 911 that somewhat confuses me, but with this car I spent a considerable amount of time trying to make sure I understood exactly what model it is and while I think I know, I’m still not entirely sure. Part of my uncertainty simply has to do with the possibility that this is a European variant of which I’m not entirely aware, but let’s cut to the chase: here we have a Black Metallic 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6, located in Paris, with 38,526 miles on it. My confusion comes from the options/modifications on this particular car. You see, it looks like a Turbo S ‘Package’ car, one of the rarest of the very rare 911 Turbos to be produced. Except, as far as I know, the Package car was only produced for the US market and the Turbo S was only produced in 1994. Presumably, then, this is a factory-modified Turbo 3.6 complete with the sport exhaust, Speedline wheels, and rear air intake of the Turbo S (along with a considerable bump in power). If that, indeed, is the case, then this probably isn’t as valuable as an actual Turbo S, but it may just be more rare. Either way, it is absolutely beautiful!
