1985 Audi Quattro

While everyone has been pining and searching for pristine examples of E30 M3s, there have been a select few that have been snapping up one of the true legends of the 1980s at much more reasonable prices. The Audi Quattro is a legend amongst its peers, bringing a slick looking turbocharged all-wheel drive luxury 4 seater to the masses. The Quattro would also redefine the World Rally Championship, set numerous records and become firmly planted in the mind of every fan of 1980s German car nut. Few were imported to the U.S., and when they were they were saddled with high prices, big bumpers and 20% less power than their European brethren. This left the Quattro expensive and slow compared to many of the competition, but that didn’t stop devoted fans from keeping one of the best secrets in German cars. Today they’re quite rare to come by, with early versions suffering death by rust, neglect or worse. Slow sales led Audi to pull the Quattro from U.S. shores, so we missed the last and greatest non-Sport version, the 20V “RR”. In the U.S. then, the cream of the crop for many are the few 1985s that were imported, with their updated dash configuration, refined interiors, and subtle exterior changes resulting in a fresher package. They’re rare cars to roll across, but one happens to be on Ebay right now in what appears to be Stone Grey Metallic with the correct 8″ Ronals giving it that menacing appearance:

I am the third owner of this car. I have all of the original owners manuals and books for the car. The car was always kept in a garage. No rust! The underside is super clean.
The car has 114600 miles on the clock on original motor. As soon as I got the car I went through all the mechanicals. I had the turbo rebuilt. The head rebuilt. New brakes and rotors. All CV’s have been replaced or rebuilt. Fresh paint, restored stereo, cassette player. Short shift kit, New hydraulic slave. Dual piston calipers for front wheels. New tires, powder coated rims. AC has been rebuilt and works great. Cruise control works well. Grey leather interior. special order. One of 72 sold in 1985. Rally legend. I love this car. I have too many and I am moving to a smaller place. I spent more than 10K on it after I got the car. I have only owned it about a year and a half.

Good news! Looks like the tape player works, judging by that pristine Memorex gem case just waiting to be popped in. Even better news, old car fans – the A/C works! There are a couple of nits to pick; it looks as though the skimped out on the correct sticker decals for the car during the repaint, and instead popped on worn badges from a 5000 or 4000 quattro, which were originally silver but have faded to black. It may be a minor point, but if you’re doing a paint job on a collector-status car, these are some of the things you need to pay attention to, because they point towards a lack of detail-oriented work. On a car such as this, that’s critical, since they have been known to rust and rust repair may have been the cause of the repaint. A slightly less minor issue is that they’ve swapped out the original (and now quite valuable) sloped quad-sealed beam bezels and gone to Euro lights. Personally, I love the look, but were I to go through an entire paint job and installing Euro lights, the much better looking Euro bumper covers would also be on my punch list. That may be personal preference, but again on a car such as this, the mix of Euro bits may not be as appealing as it would be on a lesser model. Maintenance is reported to have been completed, some of it expensive. In part, that makes you wonder why in a short ownership the seller is now flipping it.

Value on these cars has stayed well below E30 M3 level, though the two share many characteristics. Fewer would recognize the Quattro going down the street, and that was part of it’s original appeal; it was understated and conservative performance in a practical package. Recent examples of 1985 U.S. spec models have pushed $20,000, though they were more original than this car is. I’d figure this car would be priced between $16,000 and $18,000, though like the E30 M3 interest has grown and it may sneak higher. At that price point, it could be well enjoyed for years to come and is quite likely to appreciate in value.

1991 Audi 200 20V Turbo Quattro Avant – REVISIT

There was a lot of interest in the black 91 200 20V Turbo Quattro Avant Paul wrote up last month. Rightly so, since it was a classic color, in fantastic shape, and had lower miles. As one of our readers noted, it was no surprise that car disappeared in a hurry. Running across these 200s – especially in the more understated black or silver colors – is pretty tough, and finding any color in good shape is becoming a longer search. Today I found the same Lago Blue Metallic 200 20V Turbo Quattro Avant for sale that we featured last year on GCFSB. The seller has lowered the price by $1,000.

1991 Audi 200 turbo quattro Avant – This is an amazing example of a 1 year only vehicle that is both fun and very practicle. 215,000 well kept miles. Just had the timing belt done, new brake accumulater (bomb), complete tuneup, new battery and new headliner. This is the first year of the 20 valve turbo motor and with the stage II chip and 3 inch custom exhaust it is running at just about 280hp. We get a constant 20mpg and have seen a best tank of freeway driving of 26mpg. The interior is in excellent shape with only some padding break down in the drivers side bolster of the drivers side sport seat. The factory sport seats are excellent and the seat adjustment memory panel functions great as do the original seat heaters. The only two things that aren�t operating well is that the sunroof motor is very slow and the airbag light is on due to the clockspring being worn. Other mods include euro lights with relays, H&R sport springs with Koni adjustable struts, upper strut bar for extra chassis stiffness, Porsche big red brake calipers in the front, 17� Ronal R-28 wheels with low mileage 215/50/17 Toyo Proxes4 tires. The wheels have some slight curbage from daily driving but present well. The traction of this car is absolutely amazing and this is one of the last cars with the center diff lock and the ABS switch to turn off the ABS. I also have plenty of high quality Mann and Mahle oil filters and the three volume set of factory manuals that will go with the sale. We have put 100,000 miles on this car with virtually no problems and still have a hard time giving it up since there is very little out there that compares (supposedly less than 200 of these 91 20 valve turbo wagons were brought into the states). This car will pull hard to over 130mph (not that I have done that) gets over 20mpg and can easily carry a family of 4 and a dog in complete luxury in any weather condition and all of that for only $5,700 obo.

I owned a Lago 200 10V Avant for a while, and it was a very capable highway cruiser that left me with lots of memories. As much as I liked that car, I always wished that it was one of the bigger brother 20V models. This car looks to be in good shape despite the high miles, and as you’ll hear from most who have owned one of these generation Audis, higher miles shouldn’t scare the prospective buyer away. Yes, there will be more repairs down the line – especially with the hydraulic system – but these are well built and solid cars. This particular car has some nice upgrades, such as relayed Euro lights and upgraded H&R suspension to help eliminate the float. While I miss the stock 15×7.5 BBSs (or even better on these cars, the optional Euro market 16″ BBSs), it is nice to see those Porsche boat anchors under the Ronal spokes. The sport seats are also the preferred option for most buyers; both my V8 and 200 had the comfort seats and they don’t offer much support in the corners, nor were they particularly comfortable.

$5,700 is a few thousand less than the black 200 Paul wrote up, but as the miles climb the market for these cars shrinks. It’ll likely be a die hard Audi fan that picks this car up, and my guess is that it will probably be in addition to another stablemate to take some of the daily driver heat away. Still, it looks way too nice to be a winter beater, but for less than $6,000 this car offers a great glimpse into German motoring with a healthy dose of practicality – plus, with dwindling numbers remaining you’re just about guaranteed to not see another pass you on the road.

1996 Audi S6

Before you start furiously typing “C4 S6 production ended in 1995”, let me clarify something – it didn’t, and this car is from Canada. Satisfied, eh? We’ve covered a string of S6s recently, mostly focusing on the wagon variant that most people desire. However, there are some sedan fans out there, and the S6 made a very capable sedan as well. These cars have remained consistently under their competitors prices despite good looks, solid build quality, all weather capacity, and nearly unlimited tuning potential. One of the complaints on the Avant I wrote up last week was the timing belt issue; this car has had that timing belt service covered, along with suspension work. These cars have a great sound when the exhaust is opened up, and replacing the clutch is no small job, so it’s nice to see that done as well. O34 makes some great upgrades for these cars and are known for pumping out some serious power, and with the mileage the injector upgrade is probably a smart modification. The original Avus wheels are some of my favorites mounted on Audis (though not as light or strong as the earlier forged Fuchs wheels fitted to the S4 and some S6s), and with the lowering springs this car has eliminated some of the fender gap and floaty ride that plagued early 1990s Audis. The European lights are a great addition, as is the OEM S6 Plus grille, one of my favorite Audis ever made. The interior seems to be one of the best Ecru I’ve seen in a long time, especially considering the miles covered. This car certainly checks most of the right boxes, even if it isn’t a wagon.

With several thousand dollars of maintenance performance alone, the asking price of this car isn’t out of line with the condition of the car or market. The modifications aren’t extreme and could be easily reversed if the new owner wanted; but I’d keep them all in place. To me this car is an interesting counterpoint to the high mile M3 I wrote up the other day; I feel like I’d have to undo everything the owner upgraded on that car, while on this one I feel like the owner read my mind. I also mentioned in that post that while the miles on that M3 scared me a bit, I’d have much less issue jumping in to a high mile S6. I’m guessing this car will likely be snapped up by someone who needs a winter driver rather than a long term keeper because of the mileage, and as such the purchase price at just below $5,000 seems spot on. Sure, you could find one with a few less miles or a few more mods for a bit more money, but this package sure looks good!

1995 Audi S6 Avant

If the Porsche 944 Turbo remains the best value among German sports coupes, the 1992 to 1995 Audi S4 and S6 are solidly the best value in the fast executive saloon market. Not only can you purchase a very clean example for well under $10,000 (hard to do with either an M5 or 500E), but you can also get that speed in wagon form. Long considered one of the classics produced by Ingolstadt, these cars were snapped up by enthusiasts when they were undervalued in the early 2000s. Despite an uptick in their value on the market, you can still see clean examples regularly trading for $5,000 – but the good examples are getting harder to find. Today we found a solid looking example of what is to many the most desirable of the breed, a 1995 Audi S6 Avant:

OVERVIEW

This auction is for a 1995 Audi s6 Avant with ~171,000 miles. I am the second owner and purchased the car from BMW of Mountain View (1st owner traded it in) in early 2009 with 149,000 miles on it. It’s been garaged for the entire time that I’ve owned it. I’ve changed the oil every 3,000 miles using OEM (Mann) filters and Mobile 1 full synthetic 15W-50 motor oil. It’s been power waxed and polished every 6 months or so and had Meguiar’s spray wax applied when washed in between those 6 month intervals. Techron fuel cleaner has been used in 1 year intervals. I have three keys (1) master key with separate electronic key fob (2) backup key identical to master key and (3) a valet key (doesn’t open the glove compartment). I have all original documentation and owner’s manual. The car has it’s original paint, it’s never been restored or touched up. As such, the front, hood, and headlights do have some pitting and rock chips. There are some parking lot dings (see pictures) and general use scuffs. Also, when I replaced the battery, I thought I had the radio code but I didn’t and so the radio is in safe mode and will need to be unlocked by Audi or replaced. The car is fantastic, it’s been my baby for the last 4 years. It’s drives really well, the engine is smooth, and I’m going to miss it when it’s gone. My original intention was to fully restore this car, however, I just don’t have the time or space. It’s my second car and it spends a lot of it’s time in the garage (22,000 miles in 4 .5 years). I want someone with an appreciation for the original s cars to give it a good home.

FULL DISCLOSURE

In the interest of being honest and open, here is a list of things that I’ve noticed that will need work or are wrong with the vehicle:

· The front tires are wearing and will probably need to ne replaced within a year (rears look great though)

· As far as I know it’s the original clutch although you wouldn’t really know it by driving it. I’ve babied it, always rev matching on downshifts and never done any crazy launches or anything. Being 171k miles though I would say this would be a replacement item to consider when purchasing.

· There are three noticeable parking lot scratches/cracks/dings and a couple other minor paint issues that you can see from the pictures. (1) crack on the front bumper corner with (2) scratch on driver’s side front lower fender (3) ding above front driver’s side wheel well (4) rear roof spoiler paint is fading and has some visible defects (4) rear bumper corner trim piece paint is fading with visible defecting.

· It has the original paint and thus there is fair amount of pitting and rock chips in the front, hood and, headlights (see pictures).

· The radio works, however after replacing the battery it went into safe mode and I don’t have the radio code to unlock it. Fixes would be (1) call Audi and try to get a code from them (2) replace the radio head unit.

· The leather seats do show wear and the front driver seat is the most visible with some cracking in bolsters. The left torso bolster cracked open exposing the foam underneath and I’ve patched it with beige duct tape to stop further damage (see picture).

· It has not had the timing belt and water pump service. It’s been babied and garaged so the belt actually looks to be in really good condition but this was something that I had planned on doing soon and something you will want to factor in when purchasing. (I have the parts for this for DIYers).

· There is a very small coolant leak, it’s so small that it evaporates in the engine compartment as there are no drips on the floor. Just FYI.

· It didn’t come with any of the OEM floor mats for some reason. I have two rubber matts that fit decently from a first generation VW R32. There are no rear mats.

EXTRAS FOR DIY

· New water pump and timing belt

· 8 OEM Mann oil filters / 8 OEM crush washers for oil drain plug (replace after every oil change)

Sellers, take note; full disclosure is such as great thing to see. The seller could likely have gotten away without disclosing things like the small coolant leak, but the attention to detail is reassuring when looking at purchasing a car such as this. Most of the cars that we feature on GCFSB are out of the reach of your average buyer, but these cars offer an opportunity to get a reasonably reliable daily driver that’s exotic and fun to drive while practical. There are items that are harder and more expensive to replace, but this is a car that you really can DIY and keep running for hundreds of thousands of miles. This car has a leg up on most with a well documented history of repair.

Mileage is on the higher side for many “normal” cars, but still in the reasonable range for one of these limited production cars. The interior is what I would prefer in Ecru; while it shows more wear than the black typically, with all of those windows having a black interior can eliminate the need for seat heaters. Speaking of seats, this car also has the third row option, making it even more functional as a family hauler. The silicone hoses and coil pack replacements are necessary items for the long term, and Bilsteins help to firm up the floaty ride many older Audis suffer from. This may not be the dream ride that many who look through these posts hope for, but it is a solid driver that offers high performance and practicality on a level few cars can attain. Watching the prices of 200 20V Turbo Quattro Avants rise over the past few years, one has to wonder when the market will similarly take off for these S6s.

1993 Italdesign Aztec

I have a lot of respect for Bob Lutz and Chrysler in at least one way; in 1989, they came out with the Viper concept, and because of such an overwhelmingly positive response, said that it was going to go into production as is. Of course, that wasn’t true and when the production Viper arrived the next year, it was a lot less hard-edged than the original concept. That’s true of nearly every concept car that goes into production; they’re outrageous for the shows, then watered down for public consumption. Apparently, no one told that to Giugiaro’s Italdesign when they decided to take their hybrid Audi/Lancia/Spaceship directly to the market. If the complete lack of practicality didn’t cool prospective buyer’s desire to own one, surely the $225,000 entry price did. A bit of an oddity to see anywhere but on posters, there is one for sale today in Germany:

Outrageous is a pretty good descriptor for this car. Now, I know what you’re saying – it’s not German! But bare with me – aside from the Audi power plant, Italdesign is now owned by Lamborghini (nee Audi), and these cars were assembled with the help of Motoren Tecnik Mayer (MTM) – noted not only as a premier Audi tuner, but Mayer was an ex-Audi engineer. So, if the M1 can be considered German this car should be too. The design is pretty futuristic by 1988 standards, but to me it looks a bit like a Fiero GT that went horribly right. The exterior appears pretty much no-compromise and has interesting features like an external Manometer, which clearly indicates how much of a man you are for driving this beast. Note the dial goes to 11.

Being old and Italian, you can be sure that some of those Speak-n-Spell era electrics aren’t working working particularly well. On the bright side, it appears the passengers can play Contra or Legend of Zelda while you’re driving, which is probably a good thing since the lack of roof ensures you won’t be entertaining them with your conversation at any speed above 10 m.p.h.. As a super-limited production exotic roadsters go, this might not only be an affordable option, but it might even be practical. “What?!?!” you say? Well, it’s got a Audi engine that’s good for the best part of a half million miles without too much work. It probably even gets respectable fuel economy when you’re not flogging it. The drive train is sourced from a Lancia Delta Integrale – World Rally Champion spec-stuff there. And worry about the famous Italian tin worm fades when you ready that the body is mostly carbon fiber and aluminum. All that’s left are those infallible Italian electronics – hey, they could never go wrong! In all seriousness, if you’re going to drop over $150,000 on an occasional car, you might as well make it one that makes every occasion you drive it special. Porsches? Bentleys? Ferraris? Pedestrian. You don’t see them sporting gull-wing tonneau covers, do you? And you probably wouldn’t even drive your GT2 or 458 in the rain, so why do they even have roofs? See, the more you think about it, the more sense it makes….

Tuner Tuesday – 1986 Audi Quattro Treser Roadster

Not satisfied with the already exotic Audi Quattro he had helped to create, Walter Treser went on a mission to take the Quattro to the next step. His cars featured bespoke TRX wheels (the largest available to the mass market at the time), upgraded 250 horsepower engines (more boost – that could never go wrong!), and perhaps the largest chin spoiler fitted to any road car ever. Seriously, this is the Jay Leno of cars. Treser also revised the interior, rear spoiler and rear bumper cover, and for the exclusivity of one of these gems, he upgraded the price tag substantially. For some, even the Treser Quattro wasn’t enough, and for 39 lucky and wealthy individuals who just had to take it to the next level, Walter cooked up one of the stranger conversions ever done to an Audi at that point; he chopped the top and made a folding hardtop. The Treser Roadster marketed for the equivalent of around $125,000 in 1986. Rare doesn’t begin to describe these cars, but every once in a while one pops up for sale, like today’s Pearlesant White Treser in Germany :

If you had to have the ultimate non-Sport Quattro in the 1980s, this was your car. It is over the top in nearly every way. It certainly isn’t to everyone’s taste, but many of the modified cars from the 1980s weren’t. As Rick James said, “Cocaine is a hell of a drug.” Compared to some of the modified Porsches and Mercedes, the Treser cars were downright pedestrian and civilized; but next to the original, this car looks outrageous. Interestingly, I think this car ends up looking more Japanese than German, but to the right buyer, I doubt that would matter.

The car’s condition appears to be good and it’s not surprising that the top is not functioning, but the seller has promised to fix prior to the sale at full amount. Still, like older modified cars, there is a lot to go wrong here, so be prepared for plenty of visits to the mechanic to sort it out. Like the TRX wheeled BMWs, plan on getting different wheels and saving those original Tresers for show only. The driver’s side headlight seems to be at an odd angle, but that could be an easy fix; Pearlesant White is so difficult to color match and that bumper is so rare, I doubt it saw an impact that wouldn’t show in the photos.

Even among the die-hard Audi aficionados, the Treser cars are polarizing. $46,600 is top dollar for a Quattro that isn’t a sport, but these cars are so rare it’s hard to put a value on it. There are very few originals left, and even fewer in Pearlesant white. In comparison to some of the rare convertible Mercedes and Porsches from the 1980s, this isn’t outlandish money, and the Quattro values have steadily been on the rise over the past decade. As a 1986, it’s eligible for import to the U.S. without too much difficulty, so the question is – will you be the only one in the U.S. with one of these cars?
