Enough with high-dollar air-cooled Turbos and other rare 911s. They are wonderful machines, but let’s dip our toes back in the performance value end of the pool with this Rainforest Green Metallic 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo with Savannah Beige interior and 31,040 miles on it. In all of my time perusing the Porsche classifieds I cannot ever recall coming across a 996, let along a 996TT, in this color – or frankly in most any shade of green. We’ve remarked before how Green seems to be a persistently underappreciated color. That is especially true of any brighter shade of green; the closer the shade looks to black the more popular it tends to be. Rainforest Green appears to fall into a middle ground. It’s brighter than Forest Green and other similar dark examples, but obviously a far cry from some of Porsche’s pastel greens such as Viper Green or Lime Green. So we will have to see what sort of appeal this garners, but with its Savannah Beige interior it definitely has a feel of the forest about it. It is extremely earthy. For my tastes the exterior is very nice as I have no aversion to a green exterior. I would prefer one of the darker tan colors for the interior, but as I have said previously I think any of the tan interior choices complements a green exterior particularly well. While this one is not perfect, it would suit me better than many other applications.

I always get a kick out of hearing people knock the Porsche 996 911, especially for its looks. The runny egg headlights, and the large taillights make it an easy target, but I’m always quick to remind folks that even the worst looking 911 is still much more enjoyable to look at than the majority of other vehicles. This is especially true in the case of the Carrera 4S which borrows its extra wide, and aggressive look from the 911 Turbo. While reclusive purists will firmly declare that an AWD 911 is the work of the devil, aka. accounts who saw their value, I’m firmly in the camp of open minded individuals who see them as the perfect 4 season vehicle. When everyone else has had to put their toys away for winter, the C4S owner gets to keep playing with his. Charging up snow covered roads on a set of Bizzaks sounds like my idea of a good time, and on top of that, a 911 with a Thule rack is a beautiful thing. If you’re the type to not be too precious about your cars, and use them as they were intended to be used, there’s no need for a winter beater if you drive a C4S, just an extra set of wheels, and tires.

9 CommentsGenerally speaking when it comes to Porsche’s 996 our focus falls predominantly on the 996 Turbo. For a wide variety of reasons the 996 remains an unloved example from the Porsche stable, but the value to be found from the 996TT is too hard for almost anyone to pass up. We’re going to take a look at a different model from the range today, one that provides a lot of similarities to the Turbo itself, though obviously lacking a little bit in power: a Meridian Metallic 2003 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S located in California with 20,180 miles on it. Relative to most of its naturally-aspirated siblings the Carrera 4S provides significant advantages and, coming from near the end of the 996 model run, alleviates some of the reliability concerns that plagued the early 3.4 liter flat-six with which the model debuted. This particular example also comes with a few interesting options out of the Porsche Exclusive catalog that help it stand apart. From the outside most won’t be able to distinguish it from a standard C4S in Silver, but once we step inside the differences become more apparent. It’s been equipped with a full Cinnamon leather interior complete with leather-wrapped rollbar in the rear (I think I would just go ahead and remove the rear seats though since even the most nimble Cirque du soleil performer will find entry rather difficult). To complement those sporting pretensions this C4S also came with the powerkit, raising power to 345 hp, with both the sport suspension and a Brembo big brake package helping to keep everything under control. All together it’s a nice list of optional extras and aftermarket add-ons that help take this 996 to the next level and make the most of its performance value.

5 CommentsIt’s time to take a moment to visit one of the enduring performance values in not only the Porsche market, but in the second-hand market in general. Just about any 911 Turbo is a hallowed performance machine that can compete with a wide variety of high-dollar supercars, yet still provide a refined driving environment for the owner seeking a relaxed cruise. That refinement wasn’t always the case with the Turbo, but Porsche’s goal has always been to showcase both sides of its engineering acumen with these cars and ever since the 993TT it has excelled in that department. Of all of the extant models the 996TT remains the least loved. The first to have a water-cooled engine combined with a somewhat wonky appearance will do that, but the performance has never really been the issue. So while the model itself loses out on the market, buyers win. Here we have a Guards Red 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo, located in Texas, with a pretty reasonable 35,924 miles on it and a 6-speed manual transmission.
