Cassis Red Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa

There have always been a lot of interesting colors available for the 911, but Cassis Red remains one of our favorites. It’s not pastel, but it’s not dull. It’s bright, without being too flashy. For some it may come off as too pink for their tastes, but like many metallic shades it varies in sun and shade and always seems to provide interesting contrast. It also seems to be very popular on the Targa. Maybe the way in which the various Targa accents break up the color with black trim appeals to a lot of people, I’m not sure, but it does seem to be more popular on the open-topped 911s than on the Coupes. This one here complements that very nice exterior with a White leather interior. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of a white interior in any application, but this is a rare combination for those who place priority on those things. So here we have a Cassis Red Metallic 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa, located in Pennsylvania, with 74,770 miles on it.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Silver Anniversary Edition

Like many of Porsche’s special additions the Silver Anniversary Edition Carrera, released to celebrate 25 years of 911 production, featured a host of cosmetic changes intended to set it apart from other Carreras of its day, but there wasn’t really anything in the performance realm to complement those aesthetic changes. As such, values for the special editions have tended to be higher than for standard models, but not significantly higher. I’m curious whether that will remain the case as the 911 market slows down. With only the best examples commanding premiums will the special editions remain in that category? The one here should tell us something as it appears in fantastic condition. Here we have a Silver Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Silver Anniversary Edition, located in New Jersey, with 50,942 miles on it. This one comes in the lighter of the two available colors – the other being Satin Black Metallic – to contrast with the Silk Grey interior.

Motorsports Monday: 1992 Porsche 911 Turbo S2

At this point I have featured pretty much every rare 964 variant that exists, and as I’ve stated previously there were a lot of rare 964s, more so than other 911 models. I’m fairly certain this one will complete the set, even if the Turbo S2 can be argued to be an option package rather than a distinct model. No matter. With only 20 such beasts produced, so as to meet the minimum production numbers for homologation purposes, the Turbo S2 is one of the lowest production 911s we’ll find across the entire 911 range. Other parts of the world would receive the 3.3 liter 911 Turbo S, a much lightened higher-horsepower variant that provided a wonderful sendoff for the 3.3 liter turbo that served Porsche so faithfully for much of the 930’s life and the early years of the 964 Turbo. For the Turbo S2, modifications were limited to the engine so these aren’t as lightweight and hardcore as the Turbo S, but with 381 hp delivered only to the rear wheels via a single turbo the performance would be very brisk and attention holding. For their production Porsche sent 20 US Turbos to Andial where their engines were modified before being delivered to their new US owners. The example here is somewhat peculiar among very rare Porsches: it’s been driven! Here we have a Slate Grey Metallic 1992 Porsche 911 Turbo S2, located in Calgary, with 91,100 miles on it.

1987 Porsche 930 Slantnose Coupe

I’ll return now to one of my favorite divisive cars, a Slantnose Porsche 930. The 930 itself, of course, is much beloved and admired. Remove the iconic 911 front end and replace it with the 935-derived Slantnose and reactions become more mixed. For some, like myself, it’s the perfect complement to the 930’s sometimes diabolical dynamics, bringing an extra note of aggression to an already aggressive car. It’s also over-the-top in its style in a way that seems fitting for this Turbo from the ’80s. At least on the 930 Coupe. But I do understand the dilemma and why some may not care for it. Either way, the factory examples tend to be pretty highly prized on the 930 market and the example here might serve us as a useful barometer for how that market is currently holding up. The price is very high, but the condition looks quite good and the mileage is pretty low so there should be some interest. So here we have a Black 1987 Porsche 911 Slantnose Coupe, located in Florida, with Beige leather interior and around 18,300 miles on it.

1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe

My quest for interesting 964s continues apace and while many of them exist they are rarely easy to find. Enter the example we see here, a rare Diamond Blue Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe, located in Florida, with Marine Blue leather interior and a robust 155,102 miles on it. Readers might recall that I featured a Diamond Blue Metallic 3.2 Carrera Coupe last week with a similarly contrasting interior. That 911 offers a nice juxtaposition for grasping the changes Porsche instituted when it debuted the 964, the first full redesign the 911 had seen in over a decade. The new shape was a little rounder, a little more stocky looking. It also came with a host of technological changes, most significantly the debut of the Carrera 4 – Porsche’s first all-wheel drive 911. While the system has seen significant improvements since its debut it still stands as one of the more significant changes brought to the quirky engineering of Porsche’s most iconic road car.
