1989 Mercedes-Benz 300SE

$7,000 doesn’t get you a whole lot of new car these days, but it is surprising just how much old Mercedes it will buy you. In fact that’s the asking price for this W126 S-class. Produced between 1979 and 1991, the W126 represents the pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz design and engineering from the period. Penned by the illustrious Bruno Sacco, it remains an extraordinarily handsome car, with taut lines and stately proportions. I saw one parked on the streets of Washington, DC the other day and literally got off my bike to stop and admire it for a few minutes. These cars are timeless and, even today, look perfectly at home parked in front of an embassy, ready to ferry a diplomat to some high level meeting.

1995 Mercedes-Benz E300 Diesel

While perhaps not quite as exciting a drive as the E63 AMG Wagon from Andrew yesterday, our second new author, Craig, takes a look today at a beautiful and frugal classic Mercedes-Benz sedan in the making in this 1995 E300 Diesel. Please join me in welcoming Craig and enjoy his investigation of this no-spark!

If you’re looking for an affordable daily driver and you read this blog, you’re probably on the hunt for something that’s safe and reliable with a dash of Teutonic style. Those are exactly the qualities you’d find in a W124 E-class. Produced between 1984 and 1996, the W124 hails from a period in Mercedes-Benz’s history when handsome form followed well thought-out function. Brawny, angular lines and a classic profile sit atop a chassis that delivered class-leading levels of safety and reliability at the time of its unveiling. The design still holds up well today; even now, the doors on these cars still shut with a satisfying “thunk,” reminding you that once upon a time, Mercedes really did produce the most finely-engineered cars in the world.

This late-model 1995 E300 Diesel would be ideal for the commuter who desires a bit of understated style along with the frugality of an oil-burner. In this case, that’s quite literally true, since this example comes with a vegetable oil tank in the trunk.

2008 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon

As some of you noticed, a few weeks ago we asked for submissions for some new authors to both help to diversify and bolster our content here at GCFSB. We were truly overwhelmed by the responses – many dedicated fans who were interested in joining the ranks wrote in and offered a glimpse into how much enthusiasm there is surrounding our site. We’ve tried very hard to keep consistently good and interesting daily posts out there, but there was no denying that at times we’ve been shorthanded over the past year. To help remedy that, we are very excited to have two new authors joining our ranks! The first of these authors is Andrew, who joins us with quite a bang in this E63 AMG Wagon. Please join me in welcoming Andrew on board!

Motorsports Monday: 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3

While I try to vary the posts up a bit, there’s no denying that my regular “Motorsports Monday” posts are dominated by Porsche and BMW. Occasionally, I search far and wide and manage to include an Audi into the mix, but our readership undoubtedly doesn’t associate this column with Mercedes-Benz products. On top of that, the name of this particular car which is bucking that trend also isn’t unusually associated with the three-pointed star – “GT3”. So synonymous with Porsche is that combination of letters and a single number that one could overlook that it dictates the rules for an entire class of cars in the FIA. Since I like rather unusual candidates anyway, I was excited to see one of the very limited production C197 SLS GT3s come up for sale on eBay this week:
