We’re a fickle crowd, automobile enthusiasts. We’ll sit around critiquing cars all day long; what we would or wouldn’t have done, and where the current seller has stepped up or fallen short. Without knowing the whole story, we’ll question motivation, driving habits, cleaning regiments or part choices. Piece by piece, we’ll pick apart what often isn’t an unreasonable asking price for a used car, spending money that isn’t ours and making bold claims about how little we would pay for such a ride. But for those of us who have gone through attempting to rebuild a vehicle to a high standard or return a car to stock form, it’s a little easier to be objective when viewing an asking price on what is a pristine example of a rare car. Simply put, there’s a balance between buying an example that fits the “wants” – you “want” a perfect, pristine, low mile, low owner count maintained car, but you “want” to spend as little as you can. Let’s take a look at a car with a serious fan following in seriously good condition and break it down – in this case, it’s a pristine 1995 Audi S6:

Hidden Pearls Double Take: 1991 Audi V8 3.6 quattro 5-speed and 1994 V8 4.2 quattro

Like the closest counterparts, the BMW M3/M5 and the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 16v/500E, the Audi V8 quattro has long enjoyed a cult following. Unlike those other cars, though, finding a decent V8 quattro these days is quite tough. First, not many were imported – a few thousand may sound like a lot, but it’s less than the total number of E30 M3s imported, for example, by a long shot. By the time they got to their last production year, only a few hundred of the super-sedans were imported. Second, because they’re complicated, older cars that lost a lot of their value in the 1990s, many fell into states of disrepair. Over its short life, the Audi V8 underwent numerous changes; from the introductory options of automatic or manual, the 3.6 liter quad-cam all-aluminum V8 pumped a respectable 240 horsepower but by the end of the run the automatic-only 4.2 liter displacement bump resulted in nearly 280 horsepower. Sure, that’s small potatoes today, but outside of the limited Sport Quattro, these were the most powerful production Audis made before 1995. 1991 Audi 200 20V Quattro Avant

If I’m completely honest, this was not the car that was originally slated for this spot. Rather, it was a excellent condition black 1991 200 20V quattro Avant – a rare specimen in any event given the less than 200 that made it here originally, but in near mint condition they’re especially rare. Alas, it was not to be; that car sold, and in it’s place I managed to find…another 1991 200 20V quattro Avant. Perhaps I should play the lottery, since best guestimates place only around 100 of these Audi super-wagons on the road today. This example is presented in the more common Pearlesant White Metallic that was the calling card of Audi in the late 80s/early 90s, but inside we find black sport seats – a nice treat on the 200s and substantially more comfortable than the “comfort” seats I had in my 1989 200. The rest…well, the rest reads a bit like a normal 23 year old Audi does these days…

Tuner Tuesday: 1986 Audi 5000CS Quattro

While it’s tempting to throw the design laurels for Audi onto the later 200 20V quattro and S4/S6 models as we often do, it’s important to remember that they were really developments of the original Audi super-sedan, the 5000CS quattro. That model was, itself, a development of the earlier turbocharged version of the large sedan, as seen driven in by the father in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The CS quattro brought together the best elements of Audi’s designs; the revolutionary C3/Type 44 aerodynamic and futuristic design which provided excellent looks and fuel economy, the robust all-wheel drive system with locking differentials as seen in the World Rally Championship-winning Quattro and 4000S/CS quattro, and the turbocharged inline-5 that also powered the Quattro and had previously powered the front-drive sedan. But 60 Minutes managed to do a number on late 1980s Audi products, creating a scenario where Audi was nearly removed from the American market. That meant low residual values, and by many these 5000s were viewed as throw away cars for some time. It’s become rare to find good examples, and while this particular one isn’t showroom-fresh it is a reminder that the 5000 was a neat looking and performing package:

Tuner Tuesday: 1983 Porsche 930

The Porsche 930 is an absolute icon, and for some time in the 1980s it was the centerpiece of the tuning world; countless examples underwent questionable modifications and died an early death in the eyes of many. But some also underwent changes that made them icons in the automotive world. Notably, the Ruf modified cars are some of the favorites of enthusiasts for their understated aggression and brutal speed. But for most enthusiasts, while the idea of a Ruf-modified car is great, the reality of affording one is much more difficult. First, there just aren’t many true Ruf examples out there, and those that are well built original examples are quite expensive. There are plenty of pretenders to make up the difference, but if you don’t need all of the motivation of the Ruf cars you can get a substantial discount if you just accept some choice modifications to set your standard 930 enough apart to make you feel special without breaking the bank:

Ur-S Double Take: 1992 Audi S4 v. 1995 Audi S6

As Paul and our reader John both noted in last week’s 1991 Audi S4 post, the price of that appealing and clean example of was fairly high relative to what you could purchase a slightly higher miles but still clean model in the U.S. for, even not taking into account the cost of importing the car to the U.S. To underscore that point, today we’ll look at both an early and later version of the venerable 20V Turbo C4 chassis Audi – the enthusiast dubbed “Ur-S” cars. 1991 Audi V8 Quattro – REVISIT

The 1991 Audi V8 quattro from last fall is still available from Windy City Motorsports, now with a price lowered to $3,900. While these cars certainly need a healthy dose of maintenance to run reliably, at below $4,000 you’re not likely to find one in better condition for less money. This is certainly a cheaper way to live your DTM dreams than jumping into a 190E 2.3-16 or M3 these days!

If you read my last V8 quattro post during V8 week, you’d understand the love/hate relationship I have with the V8 Quattro. It’s been nearly a decade on from parting company with my 1994 4.2 V8, and while it’s true we didn’t always have the best relationship it’s the car that I miss the most out of those I’ve owned. Every time that one comes up for sale I ponder how much it would take to get it into nice condition; and then, every once in a while, a nice one pops up! Such was the case with the 1990 I wrote up for V8 week, and while that car was probably overpriced (and is still for sale), today it’s 1991 twin has come up for sale at a more reasonable price. In period correct and perfect Pearlesant Metallic over grey Connolly leather comfort seats – pretty much the only optional extras available on the V8 – today’s example is taunting me:

Having spent many a day cleaning those original BBS wheels, seeing them in good condition is very refreshing. The BBSs were quite light and a nice upgrade from the original “Aero” wheels 1991 on to 1994. The condition of this car looks to be near perfect, and if you’re interested in a V8 Quattro that’s what you want. As with the last one, you’d want to make sure to check if there are maintenance records – specifically, the timing belt service should have been completed. I see a missing headlight wiper, but that’s not really the end of the world. The early V8s are noted for vacuum leaks and oil leaks, so you’ll want to check for those – and the automatic is fairly trusty but you’d probably want to service that, too. This would be a perfect candidate for a 5 speed swap out of a 200 20V, or go crazy and pop in a 4.2 40V motor out of an A8 and a 01E 6-speed if you want a true sleeper. In stock form, the 3.6 with the automatic is underwhelming around town but fun on the highway. $5,900 may seem like a lot for an older Audi, but finding a V8 in this condition is just about impossible – and I think this one is well worth it!

2002 Audi S4 Avant

Production numbers. They are just one of those things that people like to keep in their back pocket; a trump card to make your mass-produced automobile feel a little bit less mass-produced. It’s amazing, because along with a general love of cars, it is one of the few things that unite different brands, countries, makes, models and categories – everyone wants to tout how special or unique their particular model is. Of course, some of those cars are, in fact, quite rare; Ferrari 250 GTOs, Bentley 4.5 Supercharged Open Touring Le Mans bodies, Bugatti Type 57s. Yes, if you claim you’ve got one of x number of those, you’re talking very, very special. When we get to the 1960s and production assembly lines really heated up, and especially into the 1990s where even some of the “special” cars such as BMW’s M-division ceased being hand-built, then it’s really a matter of taste and preference, in my opinion. What annoys me about these production numbers is that they’re often misquoted, built on internet legend, and can be manipulated in just about any fashion. But here we are, with an already pretty neat Audi S4 Avant; made more rare by being a 2002, then made more rare by being Pearlesant White Metallic, and even more rare with black leather. I bet it was made on Tuesday, too – that’s a rarity as well. A claimed one of three, what matters to enthusiasts is that twin-turbo V6 in the classic Avant package with a 6-speed manual:

Tuner Tuesday: 1992 Audi S4

Okay, so you can’t get the Euro-spec C4 Audi S6 here in the U.S. yet. That means the awesome 6-speed, interiors, V8 engine options, better bumpers and wheel packages remain across the pond, just out of reach of enthusiasts. Bummer, right? Well, don’t forget that nearly the same version of the Euro-spec car came here for 3 short years in the form of the S4/S6, long a popular favorite in the Audi tuning crowd. Capable of monstrous levels of power, the snap of torque in chipped versions of the 3B/AAN motor is downright addictive. You’ll quickly find your self repeatedly slowing down, a gear up from where high-revving BMWs would be calling, and planting your foot deep into the carpet to ride a giant wave of torque to illegal speeds. But the C4 is also a comfortable cruiser capable of tackling long trips with luggage for the family in any weather. It is, simply put, one of the best packages Audi has ever produced – and they don’t get much better than this one:
