1986 Audi Coupe GT Turbo Diesel

The flexibility of Audi’s B2 platform and the huge number of engine choices that manage to fit under the hood make it a natural choice for swaps. Most popular are the all-wheel drive quattros, but the Coupe GT models are also well built, hugely capable cars that react pretty well to increases in power. And just about every period Volkswagen/Audi motor has made it under the hood of the Coupe GT; from 10 to 32 valves, rev-happy DOHC 16Vs and turbocharged inline-5s to narrow-angle VR6s and even the 4.2 V8s. But this car caught my attention because of the very unusual choice of mill to squeeze juice from. This no-spark Coupe GT has a tuned and turned up 2.0 inline-5 turbo diesel:

1987 Mercedes-Benz 300TD

If there was ever a car that looked more at home on the forecourt of a country club, it was the W124 series Mercedes E-class estate. This was a car synonymous with the well-heeled housewives or those summer jaunts to New England beaches. While utilitarian, this is a rather stately machine. Take it to the local market and you would have no problem finding this 300TD amongst the myriad of vanilla, look-alike SUVs jamming the parking lot. This 300TD for sale in British Columbia is a Canadian market car, but given its age of over 25 years, is legal for US importation.

1983 Audi 5000 Turbo Diesel

The word “rare” gets tossed around an awful lot, and if I’m frank we misuse it often. We talk about rare color combinations, rare drivetrain configurations, or rare specifications. But how about an entire model line that’s rare these days? Now, that’s worthy of taking a second look, and while all early Audis fall into that category, the Type 43 large chassis cars are truly not often seen anymore. There are a few reasons that; Audi’s focus in 1984/5 shifted towards the more popular all-wheel drive models as they looked to go upscale in the market with the new Type 44 chassis. Additionally, many of the early Audis that were sold in the U.S. were sold in areas that left their rust-prone metal fatigued. And the Type 44 chassis was so thoroughly modern, it instantaneously rendered the still fairly new Type 43 a dinosaur of design. If “Video Killed the Radio Star” in 1978, aerodynamics, modern design and quattro killed the first 5000 in 1984. Looking back, though, the 5000 was a lovely design; sure, it was boxy and the U.S. didn’t really get the top-spec European 200 5T model. But by 1983 there were 3 different options to choose from; the base model was the 5000 S, available with the 2.1 inline-5 found also in the 4000 5+5 and the Coupe GT. At 100 horsepower, it wasn’t much of a match for the weight of the Type 43 chassis, but it was available with a 5-speed manual. Step up to the 5000 Turbo, and you got a healthy bump to 130 horsepower but could only select the dim-witted but reliable 3-speed automatic. But the sleeper of the trio, and the one that was seldom selected, was the 2.0 liter turbocharged inline-5 diesel option:

Wagon Week: Forbidden Fruit – 2007 Audi A4 3.0 TDi Quattro Avant S-Line 6 speed

509

In the world of desirable Audis that enthusiasts want to import from Europe, there are multitudes of wagons; the S2 and RS2 are favorites, but truth be told there were few fast Audi wagons that were brought to the U.S. compared to those that have been available in Europe. There are several generations of RS wagons, S6 pluses, and even the original S4 4.2 V8 is pretty desirable. Notably missing from most lists would be cars like the one today, and that’s a shame because given the option between owning a B7 4.2 V8 powered S4 Avant or this car, I’d choose this car any day of the week and twice on Saturday. Why? Well, first off, there’s the name – one of the longest in Audi history. Not so simply stated, this car is a 2007 Audi A4 3.0 TDi Quattro Avant S-Line, but enthusiasts like to add the 6-speed manual part on. In the realm of cars we didn’t get that are spectacular, this is pretty high on my list. Plenty of punch, a healthy does of sport, the great looks of the B7, wagon and all wheel drive utility and good fuel mileage? Sign me up:

The only reason why we are selling our Audi is we need a bigger car for our (soon) extended family.

The car is currently located in San Diego, CA.

Mind blown. The S-line package really made the B7 a great looking car, and this one is no exception. The list of options alone is impressive, as is the original $80,000 price tag. As diesel wagons go this is about as desirable as one gets. These cars can be chipped and opened up and hang with S4s without much difficulty, but even in stock form the 3.0TDi isn’t exactly a slow car. This car combines all of the wonderful attributes missing from U.S. bound Audis these days – a turbo diesel RS4 Avant look with a 6 speed manual. I keep looking at the price and considering what organs I can do without; yes, it’s covered nearly 100,000 miles but looks pristine and the importation work has been done. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the only 3.0TDi A4 Avant in the U.S., and it’s likely to be the only one for quite a long time. At $27,000, this car strikes me as a very good deal all things considered.

Now, does anyone know what a spleen brings on the open market and how long I can live without it?

John Lennon’s 1979 Mercedes-Benz 300TDT

The very first or last of any vehicle run will always garner some attention by hardcore collectors. But what if you had a vehicle that was both the first to be sold in a particular market and owned by a major celebrity. Well, this 1979 is not only the first 300TD estate to be sold in the US, but it was also known to be owned by John Lennon. We’ve seen W123 estates command strong money, but will this particular one bring a big premium given the provenance?

John Lennon’s 1979 Diesel Mercedes Benz Station Wagon. Custom designed for John and Yoko. Property of John Lennon at the time of his death. First Mercedes Benz Diesel wagon to be delivered in North America according to Mercedes Benz.

Mercedes Benz 300TD Turbo diesel station wagon has been authenticated by Mercedes Benz. Additional authentication by New York State records of automobile registrations via the VIN number 12319012003809. Originally shipped to the Apple offices 1 West 72nd Street in New York City. The Mercedes was mentioned numerous times in the book “The Last Days of John Lennon.” The memoir was written by Fredric Seaman, John Lennon’s personal assistant at the time of his death.

This Mercedes featured in a television special of ‘Lost and Found’, Episode 53 on December 18, 2000 on The History Channel. John Lennon used the wagon as his personal transportation as well as to transport his guitars and equipment to recording studios such as The Hit Factory and the Record Plant. The car is in excellent condition. The pale pea green original color was professionally repainted to a golden beige, the rims have also been upgraded.

The odometer was stopped at 13,000 when it was put on display at the Legends Museum in Nashville. The car remained on display until 1997 when it was transported to a classic car museum in Toronto, Canada. It is currently in Sarasota, Florida at the Classic Car Museum, where it has been exhibited since 2005.

On Sep-09-13 at 13:28:50 PDT, seller added the following information:
We verified with the Classic Car Museum that the vehicle has been properly maintained and is in good working order.

As we’ve seen with the last few W123 estates we’ve featured, they are typically ranging in the $10,000 to $15,000 range, for a clean one with 150,000 miles or under. Such is the respect these cars get for their durability and engineering crafted into them. The seller of this famous W123 has put the starting bid at $50,000. Ex-Lennon car or not, that is pipe dreaming. Also, if you are going to place an ad for such a significant car on eBay, a greater variety of pictures would certainly help market it to potential bidders.

I’d suspect at most this car might pull somewhere in the $20,000 to $30,000 range to the right collector, but even that figure seems reaching. It will be interesting to see whether someone bites at $50,000 at the last minute, as even at that level, the reserve isn’t met.

1990 Volkswagen Transporter Single Cab Turbo Diesel

The Volkswagen Vanagon, or Transporter as it was known elsewhere in the world, was a box on wheels beloved by holiday makers, business owners and contractors involved in all sorts of trades. While the US was offered both passenger van and camper van variants, buyers in other markets could opt for a panel van, a three-door, double cab pickup (DoKa), or the variant we see here, a single cab pickup (SinKa). A few of these more utilitarian Transporters have made their way to North America, including this rig, a 1998 Single Cab Turbo Diesel with Syncro four-wheel drive.

The 1.6 liter turbocharged inline four diesel is mounted in the rear, similar to the usual water cooled, horizontally opposed four cylinder, or “Wasserboxer” that US customers were familiar with. The bed is rather different than what we are used to seeing with US pickups, as the sides fold down and there is a storage compartment with access on either side underneath the bed. This SinKa for sale in Ontario, Canada is a neat bit of kit for someone wanting a fuel efficient, go anywhere utility vehicle.

1990 Volkswagen Transporter Single Cab Turbo Diesel on eBay

Screen Shot 2013-01-27 at 10.55.16 AM

Very rare 1990 factory Turbo Diesel Syncro Single Cab Transporter. 207,000 kms/129K. 1.6L (JX code) Turbo Diesel, 4WD Syncro. Sold new in Germany as a workman’s truck. It was maintained through it’s life and drives very nicely it does however show regular “patina” as expected with a workhorses lifestyle. As the pictures show it still has plenty of curb appeal and generates compliments every time I drive it.

Mechanically, it starts excellent even in very cold weather. It has good power (similar or slightly better than a waterboxer) and yet turns excellent fuel economy. Some might claim to break the 30mpg mark but I’ve not quite been able to achieve this. The brakes have been inspected and renewed as necessary. They stop straight, firm and without shimmy/wobble. The steering feels tight and positive on the road. The trans shifts very smoothly between all gears, warm or cold. This is a non-locker unit. Oils and filters are fresh. Tires are brand new BF Goodrich All Terrains in 215/75 R15s. They’re mounted on super rare Australian 5 spoke 5×112 T3 Alloys. Been saving these rims for years for the right rig. Personally I think they suit the truck perfectly.

Exterior, it’s largely original paint with some touch ups over the years. It shows well. Windows have been tinted with quality Llumar tint. All lights, wipers and other safety gear works as it should. The undercarriage on this truck is very clean for its age. To me, it is the selling point of the truck. It must have never seen snow and seen only inside storage during it’s life in Germany. Only the lightest surface rust on certain components, the rest are original paint. I have detailed undercarriage pictures I can send to interested parties. Working underneath is a real treat, as components come apart like they’re supposed to! If you’ve ever worked on a salt encrusted vehicle you’ll know preciously what I mean. Please review the pictures closely, I’ve tried to take very detailed and honest pictures of the truck. It shows well – the pictures clearly show that but it is 23 years old and was used as it was intended and as such it’s not perfect nor is being advertised as such. For someone who want’s a clean solid Turbo Diesel 4wd truck they can actually use – this is perfect.

Interior. Three person set up. I added an upgraded T3 seat with armrests. I tried to get a set that closely matched the 2 person bench and think I achieved that goal as well as possible with factory North American VW offerings. All the glass is in good condition. Gauges all work as they should. Both windows rise/lower properly and both vent wings open/secure as they should. Door handles inner and outer work as they should. The factory rubber flooring shows pretty good considering it’s job and it’s age. It has a bit of green paint that never bothered me enough to scrape or paint black – I’ll leave that to the new owners discretion.

VIN: WV2ZZZ24ZLG094564. A 1990 model, not 1980 but eBay’s system doesn’t recognize imported VINs.

I have in my possession a clear Ontario registration/title. If the seller requires assistance with importing or shipping, I’ll gladly assist but the costs are the buyers exclusively. I have plenty of other pictures. I can send them to interested parties. Thank you for taking the time read my ad.

We featured a practically new DoKa with less than 50 km on the odometer that was offered via a reserve auction back in November and didn’t meet the reserve with a final bid around $42,000. That is certainly an outlier when it comes to these trucks. But don’t underestimate this SinKa. I’d be more apt to bid on a truck like this, as it has a patina becoming of a work truck. There’s been a fair amount of bidding interest, and if I had to wager a guess, I’d suspect this truck might change hands for a figure somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000.

1995 Mercedes-Benz S350 Turbodiesel

When it was introduced in 1991, the W140 S class had a tough act to follow. The preceding model, the W126, was revered for its restrained style, comfort and durability. Having been introduced on the heels of a recession, many people derided the W140 as being too big and brash for the times. As time moved on, however, people began to forgive the W140 for its faults and started to appreciate it for the over engineered cruiser that it was. Features such as double glazing on the windows and self closing actuators for the doors and trunk lid hinted at the level of luxury Mercedes sought to provide passengers. Features such as Brake Assist and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) continued the company’s reputation for being at the forefront of automotive safety.

From 1992 through 1996, Mercedes-Benz offered the 300SD and S350 Turbodiesel, a short wheelbase version of the S class with the OM613 3.5 liter inline six cylinder turbo diesel. With 148 horsepower and over 4,600 lbs. to cart around, this was certainly no screamer, but made up for it a little bit with 229 lb ft. of torque. Not many of these diesel W140s reside stateside in good condition, mainly because those in the market for a big S class usually opted for the larger V8s or limited production V12. This S350 for sale in Arizona is undoubtedly the best one I’ve seen in several years.

This car was over $66k new and here is your chance to own it for a lot less then that. Rare, low mileage, mint condition car. Do not miss out!

Like the 240D we featured last week, this S350 is a classy way to conserve some fuel for those who are not in a hurry. As nice an example of a rare S class this is, almost $18,000 is pricey for any W140 sedan these days. This engine in this S350 would be more durable than many of the larger variants, but there’s still plenty gadgets that can you awry and cost a pretty penny to put right. If this car could be had somewhere between $10,000 and $14,000, it might be more of a worthwhile venture.
