1994 Mercedes-Benz E500

You never have to go very far to find an 500E or renamed E500 on these pages; in fact, last Friday we had an interesting comparison between an E28 M5 and E124 500E. People came down on both sides of the fence there, and I think it’s reasonable to like either for various reasons. The E28 M5 is a very special car, with many less made than the W124 super sedan. But numbers alone don’t tell the whole story, of course, and the W124 has many fans for good reason. It may not have been the first super sedan or even the first super Mercedes-Benz, but it was an exclamation point on a legendary period of some of the best sedans the world has yet seen. Pick the one that you like – they’re all legends now; Audi V8 quattro, 200 20V or S4/S6, BMW E28 M5 and E34 M5, the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3 and 2.5 Cosworth and, of course, the 500E/E500:

Motorsport Monday: A duo of crazy quattros – 1990 Audi 90s

Want to get into motorsport but lacking the budget to pick up a budget-racer like the Porsche 912 I wrote up earlier? Perhaps you own that 912, and just don’t want to trash it? Well, there are plenty of fun alternatives, and not all of them are on the beaten path. Take today’s twin 90s, for example. One has all the fun stuff to go through corners, and the other gets you there more quickly. Which would you prefer? Let’s start with the carver:

1990 Audi V8 Quattro

Every time I think I’m out, another one pulls me back in. I’ve pretty well documented my love/hate/love relationship with the Audi V8 quattro, and today’s example has placed me firmly back into “Camp Love”. It’s funny, too, because I really don’t think the big-body Audis look particularly good in Tornado Red; I once joked upon seeing a red V8 Quattro “Here comes the Fire Chief!” But something about the condition of today’s example has me rethinking that stance; perhaps it’s the low miles; perhaps it’s the rare to see great and clean condition; but more likely than not, it’s just that it’s a non-Pearlesant White V8:

2002 Audi S8

Last week, I wrote up a lovely Ming Blue 2001 Audi S8, and while it wasn’t the most perfect example out there, it was an honest, well maintained example. It seems that there are a plethora of 2001 models in the United States; more rare are the 2002 and 2003 models of this short-lived sports executive sedan. Today’s example looks like a carbon copy of last week’s example; again in Ming Blue and with the tan Recaro sports interior, this one is one year newer with less miles and the correct 18″ original Avus wheels:

2001 Audi S8

In a recent post, I posed the “do you need the S8” once again when reviewing a clean and properly priced A8. I suggested that for about half the price of a decent S8, you could enjoy most of the experience in a clean A8. Of course, then someone has to go and advertise a pretty clean S8, in the perfect color combination, for just a bit more than an average A8. This 2001 Ming Blue S8 has a lot going for it; the color is great, the interior has those super sport seats, and the major services have just been done. But the best part – hands down – has to be the price:
