Teens Well Spent 3: 1995 and 1996 M3s

In my recent posts Teens Well Spent, I’ve tried to compared some good value M3s to the high-dollar, low mile example we looked at a while back. That particular example was Dakar Yellow with only 26,000 miles, but an asking price to match each one of those miles. It wasn’t stock, and I was a bit dour in my evaluation of what you were getting for your money. Again, I’ve rounded up three coupes as an alternative to that example; two 1995s and one ’96, two with lower miles and one budget coupe. They’re flying the colors of the German flag appropriately, so you also have your choice of shade that you’d like. Which is the winner for your M budget?

This 1995 example certainly looks great in Hellred, and the black Nappa Vaders look to be in pristine shape. Mileage is lower at 85,000, and there’s claimed maintenance history. Modifications are kept to a minimum and are unobtrusive; I like the forged M wheel addition, for example, but I could probably do without the spoiler. Interestingly, the VIN decoder lists heated seats and sunroof as options, but not the wheels or spoiler – but it’s certainly possible they were either dealer installed or added later by one of the owners. That coincides with the M-registry, which doesn’t list the rear spoiler as a factory option until September production (this car was May ’95), meaning it must have been a dealer option. This car is a reserve auction, but I’d expect the reserve is likely set somewhere around $15-$16,000 – meaning if the PPI checks out, this appears to be a pretty clean E36 with lots of life left in a nice color combination.

Exterior Condition

The exterior of this vehicle is in AMAZING condition for the year and has been well cared for. The paint has a great shine and very smooth finish. Interior Condition

The interior of this BMW is in AMAZING condition for the year and mileage. The carpets look great as you will see in the photos. The floor mats are also like brand new. The seats look AMAZING for the year and mileage. The photos below will show EVERY part of the interior so you can see for yourself how clean it is. This car has ZERO odors, burns, or signs of smoke.

This vehicle is in perfect condition in every way, the motor runs great and is very strong and starts up fine with no issues. All driving components work just as they should, the clutch is nice and tight and shifts very smooth, the brakes work great. The complete drive-train has no issues. As great condition as this car is, IT IS a pre owned car therefore you will find some minor wear from it being driven, both interior and exterior. I would also like to add the AC is ICE cold !!!

Here’s a 1996 example that is in the less exciting exterior color of Cosmos Black, but inside is the fetching shade of Modena leather that really sets this car apart from the norm. It’s a luxury package model, so it has the wood trim and M Contours normally associated with that package, along with the less sculpted rockers. That means it also had some more luxurious accoutrements than the ’95, with electric seats, Harman Kardon stereo, automatic climate control and wood trim. Condition wise, this car appears to be one of the better ones we’ve seen and in keeping with the lower 62,000 miles covered. The detailed pictures show impressive condition throughout, and though the mechanical history isn’t disclosed items like the big-dollar Michelins indicate it wasn’t spared attention. As with the ’95, it’s not stock – but appears relatively so, and the mods that are there are arguably even more desirable with a full assortment of Dinan equipment. I’d expect that the reserve on this example may be a touch higher than the ’95; I’d guess they’re looking for a minimum of $16,000 and perhaps a touch more, but still this looks like a great example if you like the discrete package and luxury items.

If you’re on a bit more of a budget, can excuse a few more miles and don’t mind (or, like) the eye-searing Dakar Yellow, this 1995 coupe is offered with the same forged M Double Spoke wheels and rear spoiler that the Hellrot example is offered with. Without the VIN it’s impossible to know if they were installed afterwards, but they result in a good looking package overall. Maintenance is claimed to be up to date and modifications are kept to a minimum, but with 142,000 miles on the clock it’d be nice to have a bit more detail and discloser before forking over your hard earned bucks. Still, despite the mileage the condition of this example looks to be above average and the price isn’t outrageous; it could be a nice driver for someone who loves the M3s and isn’t worried about piling on miles.
