1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe

Our search constantly has us on the lookout for rare models, rare colors, and rare combinations of both. In the world of 911s that usually means something very expensive.

There is another type of search.

A search for the more frequently seen models, but still ones that seem to stand above the rest of the crowd. Since 911s are expensive full stop they’re not cheap, but for those shopping for one in the first place we’re at least delving into more reasonable territory. Sometimes we find subtle combinations of these factors, typically less common color combinations on otherwise common models with higher mileage that helps keeps prices down. That seems to be the case here. This Silver Metallic 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupe fits the bill of a standard 911 that appears in nice shape given its age and mileage. However, step into the interior and we find Burgundy leather carpets and seating that we do not see often on the 964. We frequently come across a Burgundy interior in the 3.2 Carrera and perhaps it is this model year’s close proximity and overlap with those outgoing Carreras that made it possible for Burgundy to find its way into this early Carrera 4.

Known as the 964 generation, first released in mid 1989 Porsche took a huge leap forward with the 911. It retained its classic styling and driving characteristics and combined it with groundbreaking technology based on the legendary 959 supercar. This 964 was delivered to its owner in August 1989 as one of the earliest cars in the US. It was ordered in what would become a rare combination of Silver Metallic with Burgundy leather and optional five spoke Forged Alloy wheels in replace of the base D90 wheels. It has been very well maintained that includes stacks of service records including a major engine out rebuild. No expense has been spared to keep this Porsche at its top level of performance.

We have test driven this 911 and put it through its paces. We’ve found it to be an incredible car to drive with a combination of power, handling, shifting and brakes. The mechanical feel of this 911 is what makes it such an exciting car to drive.

The Silver Metallic paint is in excellent condition & shows with a great shine. The interior is exceptionally clean & well cared for. The leather is soft & clean with minimal amounts of wear to be found. The dash is free of cracks. The carpets are clean. Trim work is all in excellent condition. It is in all original condition with no modifications except for an updated stereo with CD, Satellite radio & USB inputs.

There are no signs of leaks or corrosion. The engine pulls strong. The Transmission shifts well. The suspension is tight and proper. This is an amazing driving that Porsche that feels right in every way.

It is CarFax certified with no accidents or issues, the full report is available below.

The ’89 MY always makes for an interesting one with 911s since we have a few entirely different options and areas of collector and ‘driver’ interest. For the outgoing 930 and 3.2 Carrera those levels of interest are obvious as each would be the most advanced we can find and, in the case of the 930, the only model year available with a 5-speed manual. As we’d expect that pushes prices upward. But there was also a new model: the Carrera 4 we see here, which Porsche used for its debut of the very much redesigned 964. Overlapping the new and old models makes for a curious choice, though given just how original the Carrera 4 might seem to buyers perhaps it was something that made sense at the time. The 964 brought an entirely different level of modernity compared with a 3.2 Carrera and adding the 911’s first AWD platform provided further distinction. Of benefit, prices tend to make them a similar, if not cheaper, alternative to the outgoing Carrera as buyers choose between either the first or last year of one model’s production over the other.

The one we have here presents in nice driver condition and given that its engine already has seen a rebuild that should provide it with a good deal of life for its next owner. Both exterior and interior present well with hints of wear noticeable, but nothing that stands out significantly for a car of this age. Bidding also sits at a very reasonable point having only reached $26,827 with a few days remaining. The reserve is unmet and I’d suspect the seller will be hoping for something approaching $40K, but still that’s not too bad for an early 964 with an attractive and uncommon color combination.

Agreed this is a nice driver quality car. A friend of mine was a previous owner. I believe it has been for sale for so long because the asking price is just too high for the condition. I’m sure the engine rebuild was expensive but there are no guarantees to recovering those types of costs.
