Yesterday we looked at a standard 964 Turbo and we will now turn our attention to the next step in the Turbo’s evolution: the Turbo 3.6. This is the car the 964 Turbo was intended to be from the start and as such they attract a significant amount of attention from collectors and 964 enthusiasts in general. We see this increased attention reflected in the significant premium these cars command over the 3.3 liter 964 Turbo. In fact, the asking price here is a little more than two times that of the 3.3 liter version seen yesterday. These aren’t the cars one should turn to when in search of performance value, but their demand on the collector market seems fairly secure. The Turbo 3.6, along with its even rarer sibling the 3.6 Turbo S, is the last of the brawny, hairy-chested, single-turbo, rear-drive, air-cooled 911 Turbos produced so their historical relevance for the marque is quite significant. The example we see here is a beautiful Amazon Green Metallic 1994 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 with Cashmere leather interior and just 38,000 miles on it.

Here we have another interesting shade in a long line of variants of green that Porsche has offered on its cars. Amazon Green definitely tilts toward the blue end of the spectrum, which gives it a nice variance in different types of light. As always I have a strong preference, though I think this is shared by many, for a lighter shade interior when fitted to a car with this sort of exterior color. In that vein, here the Cashmere leather looks fantastic and I even like the rootwood accents in the dash. At least in general. I’m not sure wood accents are the best fit for the personality of the 911 Turbo, but even if it’s a little more Bentley than Porsche it does look nice. The asking price here is definitely on the high end, but it’s consistent with where we’ve seen many examples of the Turbo 3.6 priced. Whether cars are selling at those asking prices is another matter, but given the rarity of the color combination here we can understand any premiums being attached.

amazing where the prices on these of have gone….
and now the straight 3.3 Turbo 964 have started to follow suit and ask/get six figures…
I missed the boat on the 3.3, up until 3/4 years ago these were sub 100k cars….
the 3.6 & 3.6 S have become un-obtainium for anyone less than a large wallet collector
Beware of this dealer. I had a personal dealing with them on a 3.2 that looked perfect. He “claimed” he bought it from a private collector and that the paint had no damage and seats looked like new. I did a vin search and the previous seller’s ad was still archived. It was another dealer out of Chicago. The seats had tears in them, the stereo looked as if it had been ripped out and there was a baseball size paint defect on the drivers side c-pillar that had started to rust.
This is as about as pure an example of wonderful full-bore fun as I can imagine – “the last of the brawny, hairy-chested … air-cooled 911 Turbos” indeed.
Aside from whether this particular car / dealer is trustworthy – The concept of this car, and the appearance of this particular example, is something I would dream of owning if I were truly wealthy. Clearly I’ve missed the boat on owning this particular model of car, but one of the great things about GCFSB is that it also gives me fantastic examples of cars that are still obtainable as well as dream cars that hung on my bedroom walls when I was a kid.
While my all time favorite poster on the wall during my high school years was red 964 Turbo, I simply can’t understand people paying nice house money for the car. End of story.
