2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow with 4,600 miles

As much as I love cars with an insane amount of miles on them, finding older cars with just a handful of miles can be just as fun. This 2002 Mercedes-Benz SL500 Silver Arrow checks in from California with just 4,600 miles on the odometer and the classic story of “bought it for the wife, she didn’t drive it”. The last Silver Arrow I looked was a SL600 with just 5,400 miles that carried a truly insane price tag of over $100,000. This SL500 actually looks like a brand new car and the seller states that all the service was done on a regular basis regardless of mileage or use. Thankfully, this car isn’t six figures like the SL600, but it still is going to set you back a boat load more than what a Silver Arrow with around 100,000 miles will run you. Are you in?

History:

This SL was purchased brand new from Fletcher Jones Mercedes in New Port Beach. It was owned by an engineer out of Orange County and the car was originally purchased for his wife. His wife loved the car, however she preferred to drive her 1985 Mercedes 300TD, as she felt this car was too fancy to drive. The car was then used as a “Special Occasion” car when it was not garaged. It has been exclusively serviced through Fletcher Jones of New Port Beach. The car was religiously ran the car every couple weeks and all services were kept up even though mileage was not accrued.

Silver Arrow Edition:

For 2002 Mercedes-Benz produced 1,400 very special SL500 cars for the US market to commemorate the 1930s Silver Arrow Grand Prix racers. The Silver Arrow package included two-tone black and silver leather on the seats and steering wheel, with black carpets and birds eye maple trim on the dash and center stack. All R129 Silver Arrows were finished in Silver Arrow Metallic (777) and feature unique 2-piece alloy wheels. A set of Silver Arrow-specific floor mats are fitted, and the automatic transmission selector surround is made of brushed aluminum rather than plastic. Per the seller the air conditioning and interior power features work correctly. Silver Arrow cars feature an engine-turned instrument panel, and instrumentation includes a 160 mph speedometer, tachometer, analog clock, fuel gauge, temperature gauges, and a fuel economy indicator.

Exterior:

The car is virtually brand new with no accidents or paint repair. The paint shines as bright as it did when it was new, as well as the chrome trim. The wheels are like new as well and do not have any damage. Both the factory hardtop and soft top function as they did new and are in excellent condition.

Interior:

The car was just professionally detailed and the interior is in excellent condition. The supple leather seats are like new, as is the carpet. The gorgeous Black Birdseye Walnut wood trim looks amazing and too is in excellent condition. All of the gauges and components works as they should and show no wear.

Mechanicals:

Although the car has hardly any miles on it, it has been serviced regularly. The car runs, drives and brakes as it did when new. The car had a recent oil service and is ready to be enjoyed. A new set of factory spec tires have been installed with zero miles.

This is virtually a brand new car. Buy with confidence!

The asking price of $47,000 is pretty hefty considering you can get one in the low teens with 100k more miles, but this is basically a brand new Silver Arrow. If for whatever reason you missed out on this car some 17 years ago, here is your chance. Is it worth it? To the right person I think so. Is this car going to be worth $200,000 in 10 years? I don’t believe. We are entering sort of an interesting era now that newest R129 is 17 years old, so classic status is near, but it is still can be considered a “modern” Mercedes in the grand scheme of things. There are piles and piles of them to pick from and most of them have been well used, so I’m not sure what to make of them being actual collector cars. Clearly this example is near the front of the pack for the R129, but will this set the standard for lesser cars to follow? I guess we’ll find out in due time.

That’s allot of money. I have to believe that history will show the merits of the R129 are real. Someday this will be regarded as a bargain.
