2003 Mercedes-Benz SL500

A few weeks ago I took a look at probably the best R230 Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG I’ve ever come across. Turns out I wasn’t the only one who felt that way before it sold shortly after we featured it. That of course had me digging in the R230 rabbit hole and it looks like I hit gold today. This 2003 up for sale Oregon is a pretty standard example. First model year, has a couple dings and scars, 133,000 miles, but overall what’d you expect. It isn’t a flood car or two SLs welded together. Just a used 2003 SL500. Then I saw the price and wondered how insane an idea it would be drive a 16 year-old Mercedes convertible across the country. It’s that cheap.

$7,995. Thats it. I’m still searching around this ad to see why it is exactly that cheap. I see the lower part of the front bumper is cracked and the suspension looks like it is set a little high, but other than that, I’m stumped. For this used dealer to afford to sell this car for $7,995, they’d have to pay exactly what at the wholesale auction? $5,200? I know these cars are getting old, but that is crazy cheap. I could see if this car was beat to death or the top was broken, but I’m not seeing or reading anything that gives me that vibe. Dare I say the interior even looks really good? How I wish this car was even close to a days driving distance to me. I’d be willing to keep the top up and use it a daily driver. At this price, who cares if something goes wrong. Please someone tell me I’m blind and I’m missing something.

It’s actually pretty expensive for this Dodge. I just love this Dodge Intrepid’s glamorous “wood” and oh-so-slippery Chinese leather — that still barks.

Built to a standard…………….like so much in this country today, a pretty low standard.

Friend and I drove one of these from Pennsylvania to Key West for another friend. Great road trip. Car is a grand tourer, not a sports car and it fulfills that function really well. Friend’s ownership experience has been routine, so, yeah, why not?

Concerning the2003 Mercedes-Benz SL500, it would appear to me the seller is already discounting (current and future) problems with the air suspension. After all this is a 2003, one of MB’s worst quality years. Its possible the seller has already discovered the computer managing the air suspension is faulty and needs replacement and prefers to sell it right away.
