What would you do with over 700 ft lb of torque? Well, if it were me, I’d make sure to unnerve the neighbors a bit as I started out my morning commute. Fortunately, for them, I work from home. Yes, that’s just how much power these CL65 AMG coupes pack under the hood, with a healthy 604 horsepower to go along with those torques. If the CL55 AMG with its 5.5 liter supercharged V8 was not enough, Mercedes decided to go one step further and strap two turbochargers on a 6.0 liter V12 and unleash what has to be one of the most serious luxury coupes to ever hit the market. Set apart by those gun metal gray alloy wheels, this 2006 CL65 AMG for sale in North Carolina has yet to cross the 40,000 mile mark and gives those power hungry enthusiasts among us a crack at a barely broken in über-coupe.

As fellow GCFSBer Craig pointed out a few days ago with the 1995 BMW 740iL he posted, it takes a bit of nerve to run a decade old executive car from Germany. These are not the simplest of machines when it comes to mechanics and the problem with the V12 engine is there is not a lot of breathing room under the hood due to its size. This can lead to a lot of components failing over time, or even wires being cooked. Sure, the novelty of having the most insane amount of power this side of a Bugatti Veyron for what amounts to top of the line Camry and Accord money is surely appealing. But you need to really examine just how much tolerance your patience, and wallet, can withstand before taking on a beast like this. Still

Don’t want to own it but sure would like to drive it.
This car – this exact model – is the definition of an automotive money pit. I love the C215 irrationally, and the AMGs even more so, but really, read Edmunds’ long-term test of a former Benz CPO CL65 AMG to know exactly what the future holds. Anyone who buys this car needs to approach the enterprise with the expectation of a five-figure yearly upkeep bill. Nobody who doesn’t have 1) the financial means to have bought it new and 2) unconditional love for the model and resolution to care for it cost-no-object, should consider this purchase.
There are cars that often become financial drains after several inept and portly-funded owners do their damage, and then there are engineering failures that are just born bad. The C215 CL65 is a clear-cut case of the latter. Do everything right, and you’ll still be served a complete ABC failure+electrical gremlins+dual-bank coil pack implosion.
Best,
Tim Mosso
Tim, love the talk back to sanity.
