“It was bound to happen”. Over the past few months we’ve seen a spike in Audi 4000 Quattro prices, and with the spike the nice examples have started to come out of the woodwork. As a $2,500 car, you keep it until it dies. As a $5,000 car, you treat it well and it changes hands from time to time. Once prices crest $10,000 – prices that 4000s haven’t brought since the 1990 – people start flipping them. It makes sense; the 4000 Quattro is a great car but for $13,000 you can get many nicer, faster cars. Last week I wrote up a Tornado Red 1985 4000S Quattro that had reported fresh paint and seemed to be a good example, but failed to push a price as high as I expect the owner was looking for. Today’s example is arguably a bit nicer, but shown in the same shade – will you be seeing red?

Retro design has been on the rise, from new interpretations of Volkswagen Beetles and Fiat 500s to specimens like the Chevrolet SSR that appear to be a throwback but have no distinct predecessor. In the 1990s, Mercedes-Benz went about the retro concept in their own way. It had been almost 20 years since they produced a four place cabriolet, but with the W124 E class, they reintroduced this bodystyle with a modern twist. Impeccable build quality and Mercedes styling hallmarks remained, but added into the mix were the latest technologies such as ABS, airbags and an innovative roll hoop system that deployed in case of an accident behind the rear seats.
These E class Cabriolets are highly prized and this 300CE for sale in Maryland adds celebrity on top of an already desirable package. This was the very car that starred in the movie “The Firm.â€

7 CommentsThe R107 SL was the icon of a generation for Mercedes-Benz. Introduced in 1972, it’s popularity was such that it carried on strong through the end of the 1980s, bringing with it popularity that it’s larger sibling, the C126 SEC just couldn’t match. The SEC was released as a replacement for the R107 based SLC hardtop, which brought the big four place Mercedes coupe within the design language of the newly released W126 S class sedan. AMG would have their way with the SEC throughout the years, creating some really butch looking variants designed specifically for left lane Autobahn antics. The SEC would carry on until 1991, when the larger W140 based SEC would appear, bringing with it design details that were a bit more brutal in nature.
Towards the end of the run, the C126 SEC came equipped with the same 5.6 liter V8 as seen under the hood of the 560SL and 560SEL, but this two-door pillarless coupe would turn out to be the road less traveled for the high end Mercedes customer. Restrained styling, smooth power and impeccable build quality were the order of the day. These cars have a look that doesn’t look terribly outdated today, which is not something you can say for many vehicles from the 1980s. This second to last year 560SEC for sale in New Jersey is one of the lowest mileage examples we’ve seen here at GCFSB with an asking price that is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

1 CommentLast week I wrote up a clean Euro-modded 1991 Coupe Quattro, suggesting that one with a strong ownership history and the right mods was a good buy. Today, I’ve got an even stronger example and even though it doesn’t share the same desirable Euro goodies, it’s certainly the one I would choose of the two. There are several reasons for this, but first has to be the color – this car was special ordered in Glacier Blue with navy blue leather.
